Adobe Lightroom. I use the "mobile" version so everything is synced everywhere (as opposed to the "Classic" version which is local desktop only)

I need a gut check on the idea that NYC Mayor Mamdani has "doxxed" a whole bunch of rich people.
I'm trying to find out more about this idea but almost everything I'm finding in the search is garbage right-wing sources. And buried in one of the articles was the acknowledgment that it's a matter of NY state law of publish property records that would be affected by new taxes.
So what is it? Doxxing? Or state law? I'm very confused. 🤔

Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend #CodeFloe as an alternative software forge. The values of its founder are clearly not aligned with my own.
I'll be removing a couple of internal projects I'd set up there.
I'm not sure what's the next step. I've been avoiding the idea of self-hosting #Forgejo but maybe at this point that's simply inevitable. 😅
(I self-hosted Gitea for a while way back in the day…)

I spent many years expecting a lot of open source. I've spent the last few years continually disappointed by it.
And by it, I don't mean the technical opportunities. Those are still impressive. I'm referring to the structures which arise built out of humans surrounding these projects.
We have a massive governance problem, and in many ways that is downstream from a massive *capitalism* problem (and patriarchy, etc). And I wish I knew how to solve all that, but I don't. 😕

Democratized software development is being able to develop software using good, reliable tools for roughly $0.
As I have for a long, long time.
Meanwhile, devs are having to pay $$$, with costs now skyrocketing, to "build" software completely beholden to a handful of slop peddlers. Makes zero sense. (And no, "my employer pays for the tokens" is not an excuse!)

This was an amazing read. I had already been thinking about the "back to IRL" trend and how it would be harder for people who live in a more isolated manner, but I was thinking more in terms of lark of proximity to urban amenities (aka those who live very rural).

It's certainly disheartening to find out people IRL really do use Spotify to listen to podcasts and are likely not even aware of how despicable that company is. 😕
I refuse to allow any of my shows (or music) to be included on that platform. I had to tell them they could find me in other podcast players and on the website itself.
Unfortunately, it's costing me some percentage of audience. How much? Hard to say. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Reviewing 20 years of photography across multiple cameras on a large monitor (as I have lately) will lead you to one inescapable conclusion:
Smartphones are a *poor* substitute for proper cameras. 😅
I've started using my #NikonZfc way more again lately. The quality of a good mirrorless or DSLR is still so much better, and the experience of using a camera with a nice lens and manual controls is infinitely more satisfying.

I didn't fully realize it at the time (there were aspects of 90s pop culture I really didn't like when I was in the 90s), but a lot of good things happened in the 90s as a sort of comeback of 60s "hippie" ideals (like environmentalism, the organic food movement, world beat, multiculturalism, etc.).
If 90s nostalgia now picks up on some of those themes once again (go hippies! film cameras! 😂), I'm all for it!!

People have been sharing that "Programming Still Sucks" article, and while I appreciate that it's well written and funny and makes some good points, overall I don't care for it.
Because it perpetuates the myth that *software development only happens* within corporate capitalist settings. And it's simply not true, nor should it be true.
Programmers can come from all walks of life, and express themselves *joyfully* through the art of software in many local/small biz or non-capitalist settings.

I always felt like, for example, using an RSS reader should feel as slick and as design-forward as the absolute best social media app around. I was able to get partway there for a while just using Feedbin. Current takes that to the next level! ☺️
There shouldn't be any obvious spectrum of good UI/UX on one side and open platforms/protocols on the other. That Venn diagram should be nearly a unified circle. Good UX + fully open! It can be done!

Yikes…I moved on to Fleetwood Mac's self-titled 1975 album in which Buckingham & Nicks joined the band, and…
The 2017 Remastered version sounds *terrible!* Dynamic range is missing, it's "too loud", the bass is muddy and too punchy, high end feels forced. Just doesn't "breathe" like a good 70s record should at all. Eww.
Thankfully the non-remastered version is that's also on Qobuz sounds really good! (I'm on my good studio headphones so the differences are quite noticeable.)

If AI were actually intelligent, there would be no need to learn "AI literacy" because you would just intuitively interact with the AI.

I've begun to hate "feeling inspired” and then working on a project, because such bursts of passion are rare and fleeting and hard to rely on.
I'd much rather drag my ass into a planning session for a project because *I'm a goddamn professional* and get creative work done *because I have to*. I can't afford the luxury of writer's block.
* Note: this isn't about hustle culture, but rather habitual routine.

The way LLMs are hollowing out so many people, turning them into strange little characters in a twisted fictional mindscape barely tethered to the wider world of the real, may perhaps be the worst side effect of this technology cycle.
I'm not saying you are twisted if you rely on LLMs. What I'm saying is that if your mind isn't already very strong and you lack a vibrant inner life and IRL support network, *you are at risk.* It may not be a matter of if, but when.
And that is truly frightening.

I'm still really upset about what happened with MacStories.
Somehow a blog, which originally was about using your Mac (and then iPad) to do creative things on them using fun little indie apps and cool little productivity workflows, has turned into non-stop laundering talking points of agentic LLM slop peddlers.

Minus a bit about John Ternus, every article is about slop. Every single one.

I very much disagree with this assertion. It's a slightly-helpful stopgap measure, at best.
I've actually considered ending my bridgy participation several times. I don't see the ATmosphere and the Fediverse sharing much connective tissue at all. I would always emphatically encourage anyone on Bluesky to *create and nuture* their own Mastdon account for a vastly improved social web experience.
