By "bead give" do you mean you can slide them a bit as you go by? I have been tempted to scientifically ascertain the most satisfying amount of give and make my own. I haven't had much luck with rosaries. I haven't met one yet that I couldn't forget in the wash only to have it destroyed by the dryer. Rope and wood is the best so far, but the beads do have grooves in them from getting caught in the tumbler seem.
That one looks good though. If they tie good knots. I should get one that is paracord and stainless steel, if it exists.

I don't claim php is wonderful. It just is what it is, a server side templating language. People are always welcome to pick another appropriate tool for the job. But so much of the pain in CS stems from people refusing to learn new tools to accomplish a task in a domain that there current tool isn't suited for.
ORMs for example. People had a strange notion that SQL is difficult and scary. They justified it by claiming that it would make migrating backends easy. In reality SQL is about easiest grammar on the planet and almost no one ever changes their backend. If they do there is almost always some problems that are just made harder by the ORM.
People who don't actually know a language but only a framework in some language make it even worse. I once asked a guy teaching Rails hiw simple a project would have to be before he'd just hand code it instead of using rails. His answer was never. He'd use rails no matter what the project was.
Ruby now that was an unmitigated mistake. Any development paradigme that starts with "everything is a ..." Is a giant mistake.

javascript is fine. It's what people do with it that is an abomination. I was so happy we could add a little judicious dynamism to web pages to improve usability while maintaining a semantic document. We could kill flash and return to html purity! Nope, took you idiots 10 seconds to start loading half the page through ajax calls and putting a headless browser on your server so you didn't have to learn php.
Same thing with css. Yay seperation of concerns! So clean and easy, nope a minute later we have replaced all html styling crap with css framework classes and found a way to muck it up on the server with compass and tailwind.

I do it as well. It goes in spurts. I've discovered that poor sleep is a fantastic way to depress my IQ by a standard deviation. I am not exactly sure what the utility of this discovery is, but if I ever get a good night's sleep again, maybe I'll be able to figure it out.

"Everything is getting worse!"
I keep meaning to write about this, but another post on X, largely decrying inflation, reminded me. Nostr gets to hear about it though, because I am not paying Elon for extra characters and 280 may not be enough.
Everything getting worse gets worse on small scales and gets better on long scales. Which one you see depends on how far you zoom out.
It is trivial to state that everything is always getting worse. My house is getting older, my joints creakier, and there is something like a 90% chance that all my kids will be dumber and less athletic than I am.
It is simply entropy and regression to the mean at work. Time is in some sense a measure of change. The more time that passes the more change there is. Absent a directing intelligence, the changes will be random. The chance that a random change will be beneficial is miniscule. This is why when when my roof changed from "not leaking" to "leaking" I was not surprised and had very little expectation that further random changes to the structure of my eaves would return it to a not leaking state.
The moment my house was completed, it began to get worse. The same is true of society at large and my DNA. (Sorry kids!)
Luckily there are other forces at work. Entropy means that things decay to a point that they die and all that is left is the things that didn't. When I was a kid, I marveled that Europe built buildings that last, but quickly realized that it has simply been around longer and is full of the buildings that did last. Everything that didn't is built over.
The same will be true if my house. One day, not long after my kids complain about how the neighborhood has gone to pot, my house will be torn down and a better house built. Thus if you look at any one moment the house on this lot is decaying but if you look at my house when it is built and the next house when it is built, the improvement will be obvious.
Of course there is no guarantee that the next house will be better, but on average, across all houses, they will be. Same with DNA. Most of my descendants over the short term will have inferior mutations, but they will eventually be out competed by the few that end up with positive mutations. Over the long run my descendants will be superior to me.
This also occurs in civil society. People are continually wrecking it with self-centered behavior and idiotic "progress". I don't blame them.... much, understanding how to improve society is larger than any one mind can contain. Anyone who thinks they can with novel ideas, is a pompous moron, however smart they are. (And near as I can tell Karl Marx wasn't that smart.)
Over the long run bad ideas will kill the societies and individuals they infest, leading to the eventual triumph of the truth. Over long time horizons, even the most degenerate society improves. I am certainly happy to be born now over any time in the past.
One final note, pure natural selection only gets you so far. That house and that society do need to be built intentionally but good actors. This is something the accel people miss. Things don't automatically get better. Better people make a better world. One that will immediately start falling into ruin.
But one great thing for my kids, even though everything is getting worse short term and the are likely to be dumber than myself, regression to the mean implies that they will almost certainly be better looking.

I built my own more powerful tech. A two liter bottle, two short lengths of maple sap tubing, some epoxy, a drill, and a pump from an old pressure cuff.
Sure it was a little janky, what with having to cover the pin hole I drilled through the bottle cap with my finger, but it shot every bit as well as a super soaker and held far more water.

Mars Colonization is a fine goal that all Catholics should be at least open to. Basically if we cooperated with nature properly then mathematically Earth would be too small. Not saying we are close now, but our teaching on birth control etc should mesh with our view of the scale of the cosmos that God commands us to "fill and subdue"
So very long term (centuries/millenia) I am very bullish on a SpaceX like entity.
But we don't actually have to fill earth up first. Right now there is no viable export for Mars, the only real hope is for enough people to want to go for other reasons like freedom, adventure, etc; such that Mars can build its own economy and sell to itself. Exports will be unexpected and fall out of whatever Mars ends up doing well, we can't predict that now.
This isn't where I see SpaceX making money any time soon.
Near term, I do suspect they will win a huge chunk of global telecoms. Even I have reasons to switch from AT&T. I drive accross northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan to visit family and coordinating our arrival is a pain because signal is so spotty.
They will have a decade as the world's only telecom company with complete global coverage and it will be trivial, reletive to everyone else, to extend that to the moon/mars.
It will just be a matter of economics for most users including governments. Spend millions upfront for new seabed fiber or just subscribe to laser link backhaul through space to wherever in the world you want.
Also datacenters. I don't see anyone competing with SpaceX for deployment velocity for at least 5 years and could be longer. I am not even talking about in space. There are reasons beyond deck chair movement that other companies are buying compute from Elon, though some of it really is just shuffling the money around to make things look attractive.
The main problem is how fast capital can be deployed and converted into compute. Spacex can execute in months where other companies take years. Even if we are on an S curve and not an exponential, being 2 years faster on iteration makes them win in very short order.
They have the cash to get equipment and the people to get it running. As they said repeatedly on their earnings call ROI is under a year. I don't think that will last, but it means that for right now every other AI company is paying SpaceX to get further ahead.
I suspect resentment will kill them eventually though. Government isn't going to like having that level of power around.

If you take the first n primes. We'll call n=3. Then sieve the rest of the number line. You get rid of all the compsites of 2, 3, and 5. The very first composite that catches us by surprise isn't 2*7 or 3*7 or even 2*2*2*7, those are already accounted for. No the first unknown composite is 7*7. In this case p_(n+1) = 7. All the things that kinda look like primes below 49 really are prime.
So if I have some construction that sieves the first n primes the anything in that construction that is less than p_(n+1)^2 is a prime.
My problem is that I need to show that there is not one number but two that have a difference of two. There isn't anything in the definition of primes that insists they be there. I can count the number of twin primes in the whole set and I know the length of the set, so I can calculate the average gap between them directly.
That average says that there should be lots of twin pairs less than the square. But the twin primes are under no obligation to be evenly distributed in the first tiny sliver for my benefit.
Thus I need to say something else. In this case I am asking "how far apart can successive pairs get?"
Empirically it looks like the maximum gap is indeed less than the square of the next prime. So as far as I have results (n=22) I would be guaranteed at least 4 twin primes even if they were as far apart as they could possibly be.
The trend is actually increasing! Successive n seem to allow more and more twin primes less than the square.
But it is a very close thing. It grows slowly. Also I don't have a formula for it. The trend may reverse after Rayo's number or something.
I very much doubt it, we should be able to say something lame like "here is a super slow growing logarithm, that tracks the ratio of p_(n+1)^2/G(n). We don't know if the values are close to the curve but we do know that it crosses it infinitely often"

Yeah, I can't run that. Not even close. I got a Cursor subscription and have been using Grok 4.5. It seems to be the best bang for the buck.
I had it port some math code to CUDA so I could get some larger results. It spit out a number in an hour that would have taken days on my CPU and my CPU isn't slow.
Now I need about 2 days to get the next number 😛 and 4 months to get the one after that and 20 years to get the one after that.

Just to nerd snipe you. The numbers l am looking for are:
The largest gap between successive pairs of twin coprimes in the nth wheel sieve.
Basically you find all the numbers less than the the first n primes multiplied together, p_n#, and coprime to it. Then isolate the twins, then find their central numbers. E.G. 12 for (11,13) and 18 for (17,19) then you find the gap between them. 6 in the example above. For 2*3*5=30 the centers are 0,12,18,30. So the largest gap is 12
The wheels are symmetric so you really only need to search the first half taking care to double the middle gap. So in our example above I count to 15, noting the gap of 12 then count 3 more to get to 15, double that to get 6. 12 is bigger than 6 so keep that. No need to do 30-18, that's just 12 again.
Same with larger wheels n=4, 2*3*5*7=210 and so on. Blows up fast. I have done to n=14.
Why? Well any element of the set < p_n^2 is prime if the maximum gap is < p_n^2 then no matter how well orchestrated the primes are in eliminating twin elements then there will always be some twin elements that are prime.
So I am trying to figure out what grows faster max_gap or p_n^2. So far the ratio p_n^2/max_gap is 3.2 or something and somewhat consistent. But still a long way to infinity.

Mostly it is mormons complaining. No one else thinks they are christians. It is a stolen valor thing. They want the respectability of being called Christian without having to believe anything that christians believe.
As a Catholic, that is kind of how I feel about Nicean Christians who want to redefine what Catholic means in the creed so they can still claim it.
That being said. I do actually consider most to be Christian because they have baptism and what baptism does is make someone into a Christian. Thus they are part of the church whether they like it or not.
