oh is it a good night for bothering @The Fishcake (nostr.build) with nostr build stuff? 😁 my one UX problem is that every time I re-login and quick upload, I forget this goes into the non-user uploads and so I loose it later when I go looking and realize I did not do the extra click from logging in -> my profile -> *then upload.
anyway, watching tanel get confused was kindof amusing but, clearly the button is RIGHT there. unlike my issue which deserves fixing 😂

well, I am having a really hard time telling the difference tbh. host was not very forthcoming.
just like nostr, is it an attack? is it simply a huge amount of people genuinely using tor and trying to exit to a relay that will accept them? so many questions, it is exhausting.

I do really like this app I built. RelayTools-android. I haven't needed to do a release in a while cause it's working so well. I also have spare capacity on relay.tools if anyone is looking for a relay.
Spent all weekend fending off DDoS attacks from X Y and Z, just to keep the services up for my loyal customer base.
Someone recently told me they won't recommend me as a relay host because they don't know for sure if I'll be up for 3 more years. That was pretty insulting to me, like what? I've already been running 3 years and outlasted companies that spent a million dollars on saturating the relay market, just to disappear. So yeah, if my track record doesn't speak for itself I guess I'm just not shilling hard enough.

there could be something to this, I am seeing lots of TOR + okhttp/4.12.0 violating the simultaneous connections threshold. I thought it might just be popular to use tor, but.. it can't be this popular can it? Amethyst uses tor by default and I don't see it triggering the thresholds.. (based on user agent stats)

i had a freakout moment, my internet was suspiciously down during this whole thing, and i had to scramble to set my DNS TTLs back because I forgot they were set to 60s for the move. thankfully only cost me an extra 6$.

Actually was kindof fun, fending off the DDoS last night. Haven't really had that much excitement for a long while. Once i got back online and sighed relief that they failed to balloon my bills or anything and reminded me that, nostr shit is real shit. It may just seem like failure and a lot of GMs to most but we are building a decentralized network that has made 'the list'. Our biggest users are the ones trying to stop people from communicating. They have a lotta moneys, but we have source codes and many nodes.

Nostr1 relay operators, rate limits have been put in effect on all relays due to an on-going DDoS attack. Since I have never had to turn this on previously, I am curious if it will have any impact on you. If you see a 403, that means you are on an hour cool-down, and may have your IP blocked for longer if we start to tip over. If you see a 429, try to back off or you will be put on cool-down. The limits should be fairly permissive, but since we have never had to do this before no doubt everyone and their apps are used to unlimited rates.

For those who's grants are about to expire. Consider your plans, study the recent failures that had their plans directly invalidated by AI (tailwind, lnbits, .. many others).. Consider the successes (open claw, RedHat). It is very possible there are new opportunities for plans that did not work previously. Whatever you do, don't put it off till the last minute.

I may not be good at products business, but I'm good at professional services business. I think this is the one type of business that open source will continue to support. It's always been this way for me, being in devops most of my career. I would always pick products that were open vs. closed, and this leads to some good outcomes such as the business you work for not being tied into a bunch of 3rd party contracts, more flexibility for the companies needs and integrations, and more employment.
Aside from that, for nostr in particular, the source we generate makes it easier for nostr to spread by training the AI with more code per-capita than other competing ideas like bsky. This snowball effect will eventually lead to more employment opportunities for working on nostr services than for other less popular or closed ideas.
Open source has always been a really hard business to model, very few successes vs. product businesses that draw investment easier and scale without more humans. However, it does still power most of the world's compute so, generally I would say it is possible to succeed. Look at openclaw, this is a good example. There were likely hundereds of product companies that built a similar thing all to be crushed in a few months by open source, and the dev did pretty good for himself. That's a unicorn exit for opensource, the likes of which I am not sure I've ever seen.
This is exciting times, I think nostr did a good job training the AI, and that means all the devs that put effort into it mostly-selflessly made this happen. The code lives on past the abandoned projects and becomes something new faster than ever was possible before.
The downsides and upsides are there for sure, it is worth coming up with an opensource business plan for your company if you choose to go this route so that you can succeed as a business. Blindly running an opensource business without a plan, is not likely to succeed and given it's a lot harder than a product company it should be given more thought and consideration vs. shooting from the hip.

yeah, sorry @Seth I was unable to implement nip29 for relay.tools.. It's somewhat of an unfortunate fork in nostr imho that added so much complication to the backend I just could not justify adding it yet.. I was also waiting to see if "it takes off", which it did not seem to. The stickyness of users frequenting group clients was just not there due to manybugs and lack of native clients/notifications.
I believe some nip29 clients can still use 'normal' relays but the moderation and basically everything is not supported.
I still think relay feeds as groups themselves, are super nice and accomplish much of what we want in a nip29 group. So that has remained my focus (relay centric clients like jumble, relaytools-android, yakihonne)
