Social media and bank accounts are transparent by default.
Individually, that may not feel like a major risk. The bank that knows your wealth probably is not going to rob you. Facebook reading your messages probably will not create an immediate problem for you personally.
But the risk is at the aggregate level.
A small number of institutions can see liquidity, sentiment, relationships, political energy, social coordination and emerging grassroots movements. They can trade against it, shape it, throttle it or intervene before it reaches critical mass.
That creates an enormous asymmetry of power.
“Private” accounts are not truly private when the platform itself can still see everything. A private Facebook profile is private from other users, not from Facebook.
Nostr needs more read restricted relays and encrypted notes that only the intended audience can see. Something closer to a private social graph, without a Facebook like entity sitting above it all.
Privacy is not just about hiding individual secrets. It is about preventing aggregate surveillance from becoming a control system.

Social media sold us reach.
Reach more people. Grow your audience. Build a following. Go viral. Be heard.
But the part they left out is that reach works both ways.
Yes, social media gives us reach into the world.
But it also gives platforms, advertisers, governments, data brokers, AI models and manipulation engines reach into us.
That is the trade.
We get a bigger microphone, and they get a bigger window into our lives.
They see who we know, what we care about, what makes us angry, what makes us afraid, what we are starting to believe, and what kind of movement we might drift toward before even we have fully realised it ourselves.
That is why private profiles do not solve the problem.
Private from who?
Private from other users, maybe.
Not private from the platform. Not private from the algorithm. Not private from the ad system. Not private from AI training, behavioural prediction, leaks, subpoenas, policy changes, partnerships, or whoever buys the company later.
That is not privacy.
That is a one way mirror.
And once people know the room is bugged, they change how they speak.
They become guarded. They perform. They self censor. They stop thinking out loud and start managing an image.
Something human gets lost.
Because in real life, we do not speak the same way to everyone.
There are things we say publicly. There are things we say around acquaintances. There are things we say to friends. And there are things we only say in confidence.
That is not secrecy.
That is normal human trust.
Social media flattened all of that into one giant public stage, then built machines to measure, rank, nudge and manipulate whatever happened on the stage.
The result is not just surveillance. It is social manipulation at scale.
The algorithm does not simply show people what is happening. It decides what gets amplified, what gets buried, what gets mocked, what gets normalised, what gets repeated, and what gets injected into the public mind.
So maybe the next social network should not be designed around maximum reach.
Maybe it should be designed around limiting reach.
Fully encrypted social media, shared only with the circles you choose.
Public when you want public.
Friends when you want friends.
Small circles when an idea is still forming.
Confidence when confidence is required.
That would not kill the spread of ideas. It would make them spread more naturally.
A good idea could still move from person to person, friend group to friend group, community to community. But it would move through trust, not through an engagement machine. It would be tested, challenged, refined and approved before spreading widely.
That is how human culture is meant to work.
Not every half formed thought blasted into the open for every scraper, bot farm, journalist, activist group, platform, agency and machine learning system to harvest before it has even had time to breathe.
Inside the trust path, the idea is alive.
Outside it, there is nothing to collect.
That is the missing piece.
Not just decentralised posting.
Encrypted reach control.
Human sized speech.
The ability to speak differently in different rooms without every word becoming raw material for the machine.

The longer I watch Nostr, the more I struggle to believe the8 stagnation is accidental.
It reminds me of what Bitcoin Core did to Bitcoin. The project still exists, the language of freedom is still there, but the useful parts get narrowed, constrained, and redirected until only a very specific version is allowed to survive.
Nostr should be much bigger than a Bitcoin social network. Its core design is powerful because it does not need a blockchain. It should be a neutral social and identity protocol that can support any app, any community, and any payment rail. That is the whole point. It is not beholden to one cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Yet in practice, payments are treated as if Lightning is the only serious option. That immediately limits the appeal to a niche market.
And if we are going to have Lightning forced into everything, then at least use it for what it is actually good at.
Micro payments could be powerful because they break the subscription model. You should not need an ongoing commitment just to read one article, access one feature, boost one post, store one file, use one service, or unlock one piece of content.
That is the point. Pay once. Pay per use. Pay for access when you need it. No account lock in. No recurring charge you forget about. No platform sitting between the user and the service provider forever.
A good Nostr app should be able to say: here is a useful service, here is the price, pay however you want. Use Lightning for instant small payments where it makes sense. Use Monero where privacy matters. Use fiat, cards, bank transfer, or anything else where that works better.
The payment rail should serve the application. It should not dictate the entire culture of the protocol.
Instead, whenever people talk about monetisation, everything gets dragged back toward value for value.
Value for value has its place, but it is not the same as charging for a service. It does not reliably fund infrastructure, support, moderation, development, storage, bandwidth, discovery, or long term product work.
The same issue shows up in the apps themselves. They are trying to chase normies by compromising privacy and censorship resistance for convenience. But what normal person is going to accept worse performance, a smaller social graph, and a niche culture just to use a protocol they do not care about?
That is what makes me suspicious. The obvious path is to build real apps that do something useful, charge directly for the service, and use Nostr as the open social layer underneath.
But the path promoted by the influencers always seems weaker: Lightning only, value for value, half baked social apps, and endless appeals to ideology.
Maybe it is just bad incentives. Maybe it is ideological capture. But when the same weak ideas are pushed over and over, and every commercially useful path is treated as impure, it starts to look like containment.
The best way to stop Nostr is to fund and promote versions of it that absorb the dissidents, keep them busy, and never become useful enough to threaten the platforms.
Nostr should be the open social layer for applications that cannot be captured and don't give away more user data than necessary. Right now, it feels like it is being steered into becoming a harmless Bitcoin subculture.

I can believe that Nostr may be funded, influenced, or promoted by bad actors with their own agendas. I have seen how quickly character assassination starts when someone is building or implementing something powerful.
But I have to admit, turning up like this is genuinely hilarious:

I can even accept the possibility that Nostr is promoted by some people because they think it is a poor solution, or because they believe it can be steered, captured, fragmented, or used for their own ends.
But that does not answer the harder question.
Why is Pubky better?
Not just rhetorically. Structurally.
Pubky seems to be trying to solve real problems: public key based identity, user held data, homeservers, portable hosting, semantic discovery, and DHT based routing. Those are serious ideas. They may address some of Nostr’s weaknesses around relay discovery, data portability, indexing, moderation, and user controlled storage.
But if the claim is that Pubky is the better path, I would like to see that explained clearly.
Can it scale beyond early adopters?
Can it avoid recreating new gatekeepers at the homeserver or indexer layer?
Does it actually reduce metadata exposure, or does it just move metadata to different infrastructure?
Can it support genuine pseudonymity, private communication, and peer to peer payments in a way that is production ready?
Can it integrate with Bitcoin, Lightning, Monero, and other payment systems without becoming captured by one funding interest?
And most importantly, why should anyone believe the funders are altruistic?
The answer cannot be “trust us”.
The answer has to be architecture.
Show the credible exit. Show the independent implementations. Show how users keep their data. Show how identities survive provider failure. Show how indexers can compete. Show how moderation does not become centralised control. Show how bridges can strengthen existing freedom tech instead of fragmenting it.
There are clearly developers on Nostr genuinely trying to build something useful. So the argument cannot just be “Nostr has bad actors around it”.
A better argument would be:
Here is what Pubky solves.
Here is what Nostr gets wrong.
Here is what Pubky still does not solve.
And here is how Pubky components could bridge into Nostr to fix real weaknesses without demanding that everyone abandon what already works.
If Pubky is genuinely better, explain the mechanism.
If it can scale, explain the scaling model.
If it is less capturable, explain the failure modes.
Otherwise it is not obviously a better protocol.
It is just a different group of people asking for trust.

I still think 2 sat zaps matter. The value is not the 2 sats themselves, it is the ability to make tiny, voluntary payments practical. That can support pay per use, lightweight paywalls, and publishing models that do not depend on subscriptions or centralised platforms.
The use case is powerful. It just has not been implemented with seamless enough UX yet.

Yeah, my idea would be heavier for the clients: You would be in a MLS for each friend, with the rest of their friends. The client would agrigate all the groups so you see a traditional feed rather than a conversation you need to follow.
It would let people share more intimately with an inner circle and progressively more reserved into wider circles or publically. But from the outside all except the public posts are dark

Why not make it so you can post your regular notes and reactions in a MLS group with friends. Like Facebook restricted profiles, except unlike on Facebook no one can see what is posted except those given permission?
