It doesn't seem to be uniform or consistent across machine types. For the devices with the screen facing you, I usually notice that I have to ask them to let me pay with Bitcoin. There is something they have to hit on their side.
When there is only a screen facing them, sometimes people let me swivel it around and tap the "other payment options" on the top left and sometimes the Bitcoin setting is there.
Sometimes they have to set this up before to have it even be an option. Sometimes not. I have been to some vendors who simply have the more brick shaped device, and when going through the checkout process I noticed a Bitcoin option there when they were completely unaware.
So, cause a scene and ask. Right now it seems really random to me so it doesn't hurt to try.

I appreciate your observation of the fractal and I agree that is certainly there.
I’d like to push back on one point that follows from the hypothesis I develop in my book: we must be careful about drawing conclusions about reality exclusively from the mind. Physiologically, the mind can shield us from fully experiencing truth. Accordingly, there are patterns that I think we should be mindful of.
I raise this because I want to challenge your inside/outside framework. The intellectual mind loves to carve reality into binaries: good/bad, up/down, left/right, red/blue, etc. Yet the truth is that these opposites are part of a single whole. The mind always forms a Yin Yang, but there is only One. There may be no definitive ‘me’ or ‘you’ just as there may be no clear inside or outside; everything belongs to one cosmic order, a oneness. Individuality, to me, seems an illusion designed to help us navigate this cosmic flow. This oneness, at different observational scales, simply contains what appears as fractals but is one organization throughout.
Consider biology: we speak of cells as systems, organs as systems, and then the body as a system. What, then, is the body? It is both many systems and one system that is a dissipative structure. So too is the Earth. Our body also includes many bacterial cells. Without them we would be nothing. So what truly distinguishes our biological system to the system of nature? It is all one flow. My point here is that the fractals exists, but only because our mind conceptualizes and creates intellectual separations. It does not conceptualize the whole, only separates parts. Accordingly, in one sense of the word, they are not real. They are akin to a file or trashcan that we see on the monitor’s of our computer, a helpful fiction for us to navigate a world of subatomic particles.
Thus, I’m not convinced there is a distinct “outside” consciousness separate from the “inside” one we have. Rather, the illusion of separation is created by the mind. You, me, and all of us, are facets of the same unified whole, and the mind merely projects duality. So, while this is hard to articulate in a short post. I would posit that this external consciousness that you are referencing is not external at all. It is one aspect of the true Self.

You write in the paper about the observer problem and argue that “[the collapse] demands work. It demands entropy. It demands proof of work”. You further write “collapse is an act of conscious computation; deliberate work performed by a conscious entity. It is a thermodynamic expenditure and requires work to create time”. I find this very beautiful and interesting to think about, especially given what my research focuses on. I was hoping you could elaborate.
I would like to ask you where you think the interaction between entropy and consciousness is. If the collapse of a state is due to entropy and work. Is it our mind-body, and the work and entropic process that stems from it, that produces the collapse, or something else? How would you articulate that interaction?
It seems to me that our bodies function as light‑absorbing dissipative structures whose architecture is tuned for quantum coherence. By aligning particles into low‑entropy, coherent states we extract maximal work from each photon, while the unavoidable waste heat is exported to the environment. In this way we perform our biological agenda with maximal efficiency, and the exported entropy contributes to the inexorable increase of universal entropy. So just like you say that entropy and work causes the collapse. I'm wondering what you think stems from our body that causes the collapse. Is it this? Or do you feel it is something else?

I have had multiple conversations about this entire debate with @nprofile…5z4g, some in person.
I consider him a friend.
I know him, and know his heart is in the right place.
That really isn’t my point. We all have to be very careful with our minds.
There are real solutions out there to solve this problem. I think we need to move beyond discussing a temporary solution like BIP-110, and begin discussing permanent solutions.
Whether or not this BIP succeeds or fails, our energy needs to be directed to finding the true permanent solution next. That was always the case, and still is. Regardless of what happens in a month.

I am not saying I am convinced by this idea, but:
How do we know that BIP-110 is not actually a part of the complex’s agenda too? How do we know that we are not being attacked at both fronts?
What if BIP-110 is a proof of concept to the idea that if you can get enough people riled up on Twitter, you can inject code into Bitcoin that censors transactions. You get people riled up first by corrupting Core.
While you may agree with this censorship. What about the next one? It’s a slippery slope.
Again, I’m not even sure I agree with this idea. But it has crossed my mind.
The way this conversation has carried itself feels just like political movements that end up growing power of the State.
I think we should all be very careful and mindful of how our minds are manipulated on algorithmically manipulated platforms.

Personally, I don’t think Nostr is the appropriate domain to discuss code. Especially in the communal way which would be appropriate here.
Unless I am ignorant, nostr articles can’t be edited.
It would be difficult for people to to submit alternate code changes without writing a different article disconnected from yours, or asking you to change yours. Let alone test code, etc.
It GitHub, all is organized. Plus, it would be necessary to use to merge to the actual protocol regardless.

I have read this.
My first recommendation is draft this as a soft fork rather than hard fork.
While I appreciate your argument of blind forks, I feel those arguments should be distinct from this proposal. Furthermore, writing and framing this as a soft forks will be important in having this reach consensus.
At the technical level, the same intention should be held. Simply restrict rules to enforce bit price conservation. I wouldn’t remove code that would require a hard fork.

Perhaps there are some misunderstandings on how we do things. Our hashrate redirect program does not involve FPPS pools.
Our clients can freely pick their pool. Most of our clients use Ocean. In fact, our company fleet points to Ocean also. We are all using DATUM too.
When we compensate hashrate. We simply point our machines to your pool. You still receive the bitcoin from Ocean as if nothing changed.
So, like I said: I respect your values and we try to embody them in the service we have created.

I appreciate you asking around nostr for insight on our hosting service. If you don’t mind, and while my opinion is obviously biased, I would like to offer a reply here, if for nothing else than for educational purposes.
Firstly, we compensate with hashrate, and we’re proud of it. Our company is full of team members who have been wronged by hosts in the past. One of the lessons we took from those experiences is that customer experience is a low priority for many. While machines going down from time to time is natural in the mining business, we wanted a client experience where one could rest easy knowing we’d handle their machine in a timely manner and that they’d see little to no disruption in their accumulation of sats. Downtime can significantly impact one’s investment outlook, especially considering the scarcity and precious nature of the bitcoin being mined. This is true not only because of bitcoin’s price appreciation, but because every day spent not mining is sats you’ll never get back, thanks to the difficulty adjustment. We want to maximize the sats our clients receive, so we compensate hashrate.
Furthermore, we’ve sold both Whatsminer and Bitmain machines in the past, and at the moment we’re only selling S21 XPs. We’ve found them incredibly reliable, and they remain profitable even at today’s market price and network difficulty.
Lastly, we think it’s worth noting the potential tax benefits of mining. It’s absolutely true that mining is a difficult business. In that same light, most who participate do so as a business and are therefore eligible for bonus depreciation and all the write-off potential of a normal business. In our opinion, one reason mining can be more attractive than buying bitcoin, and much more attractive than renting hashrate, is that the purchase of machines, when structured correctly, can be a tax write-off, which can drastically change one’s investment outlook and return on investment.
All that said, we hope you don’t mind us interjecting on this thread. We simply wanted to share our perspective, and we very much appreciate the open dialogue.

I look forward to reading more of your work as it flows out.
Given my more physiologic background, I can’t help but think of consciousness as stemming from the interplay of biological systems maintaining balance in this flow.
That being said, I enjoy your framing. It has me thinking of the ancient adherence to the idea that there is something important about paying attention to the eternal now, rather than succumbing to the monkey mind that goes back into memory or projects forward.
I think there is little distinction between the internal observer and the external consciousness. It seems evident to me that the more our attention is solely focused on the eternal now, there is an experienced unity with the holy consciousness. We feel one with it all, and less attached to our felt individuality. It is when the intellectual mind takes the wheel, the same one that likes to go back into memory or project forward, when the felt experience of an individualized internal observer becomes more predominant.
We are all vessels of light, radiating from the same glowing ball, and it is only because there are holes poked throughout the shroud that wraps around it, that we feel as if we are distinct rays of light, rather than one holy ball of light that is going through this process.

Much of my work centers around the nature of the mind. Humans, like all life, act as dissipative structures, and our behaviors are oriented toward facilitating the flow of energy within this cosmic order. But there is a fundamental dilemma at the core of the nature of our mind. On the one hand, we have the intellectual mind, which uses symbols and logic to utilize informational structures so that we can build the civilization we see around us. At the same time, physiologically speaking, I believe the intellectual mind acts as a kind of fog over our bodies, preventing us from properly experiencing the feeling of being aligned with that flow. It is when we calm the mind and otherwise act in alignment with nature that we can more vividly and truly realize our place in that cosmic flow: that which provides us meaning.
So it is interesting to think about what you're saying. What you call short-term memory is what we experience as the matter and energy of our waking moment (which I may argue is better experienced when we learn to remove the fog of the mind), and that collapses into long-term memory, which, in a sense, lies beyond us. While beyond us, we are always trying to come into contact with it, as it helps in our pursuit of alignment and felt sense of purpose.
Bitcoin, then, is us encoding that memory on that more eternal level, but in a way that is still more intelligible to our intellectual side. I have long believed that the computer is here to solve this ancient dilemma we have between the intellectual mind and the experiences we consider more holy and aligned with the cosmic order. Perhaps this is what Bitcoin fundamentally solves: it resolves the dilemma by capturing information that is helpful for our intellectual mind and encoding it into the eternal memory through energy, which is more aligned with the grander cosmic flow. In a way, bringing the two into one: giving us an even more powerful tool for self discovery and alignment with the flow.

I couldn’t agree more. Something I am trying to push recently is that it’s not enough to simply HODL your Bitcoin.
Bitcoin should be spent. It helps the blood flow of the network. The more the blood flows, the healthier it is.
One day, the block subsidy disappears. At that time, Bitcoin is either spent, or it is no longer mined, and dies.
No blood flow, no life.

I appreciate the civil discourse. However, I do interpret there to be several bad assumptions here.
Furthermore, I’d prefer to highlight a greater point. I find it odd that so many in our space are trying to argue that it’s possible for a small minority to change the rules of Bitcoin.
Regardless of the validity (or lack thereof of BIP110) , I think we should all be more vigilant.
Given the centralization of mining pools, if BIP110 succeeds, it would set a very bad precedent.

Bitcoin as an invention is very difficult to attack, but the human network is easily manipulatable.

I do apologize, but now I am not following your line of reasoning.
Nodes are not Sybil resistant. Furthermore, 20% of nodes running BIP-110 does not influence hashrate.
Even if many people run a BIP-110 node, this does not mean the longest chain will become a BIP-110 chain. It will only result in many people running nodes that have frozen and stop seeing new blocks.

The project of Ocean is worthy of our respect, their attempts to push BIP-110 aside.
What is ironic is that BIP-110 will likely fail, and one major reason is that it requires 55% of miner consensus and this essentially means that it all depends on the actions of Antpool and Foundry.
Regardless of the validity ( or lack thereof) of this BIP, the fact that the final decision is really in the hands of two entities is an issue we all should be concerned about. Ocean is working to fix this and that is a good thing for Bitcoin.

I agree with that. Maybe it’s related to what I was talking about in Vegas, perhaps there is a cultural problem in bitcoin.
Maybe Saylor is a product of this Bitcoin class he entered in. When the major battle cry of the community was “hodl”. Rather than “run nodes”, “decentralize mining pool”, “spend sats in your community”, or what have you.
The community cheered him on at first. Maybe the community is partially to blame for having cultural mottos that were half-truths.
