Totally agree, thought so too, became the startup myself, but from my experience it's still too early, for now. Too much of the world is operating on fiat still, just look at the Bitcoin community right now lol the demands, expectations, and incentives still make fiat gains necessary for survival, but maybe its different in full Bitcoin Standard locations, and things are changing.. The more people/businesses who see things this way, the more it spreads.. I do believe this is the future, and the present in our own realities ;)

What if there was a plan to stop Bitcoin? Just asking, what if? Maybe it would look something like this:
- De-fund independent devs and replace them with compliant ones to make slow, steady changes to the protocol over years time
- Fund businesses and products rebuilding fiat on Bitcoin and discredit FOSS / true Bitcoin-only projects
- Fund and amplify compliant voices willing to promote whatever serves the change: People, narratives, products, etc
- Fund and promote fiat products on top of Bitcoin to centralize as much of it as possible
- Delete, ignore, flag, downzap, block, suppress, and discredit any independent thinkers and their solutions (e.g. Security flags, bug fixes, #BIP110...)
- Then kill the founding culture by telling people not to self-custody, non-monetary data is good for Bitcoin, you and your node don't matter, you need to buy a fiat product for Bitcoin to be money... And maybe even rug those who saw through the propaganda and "did the right things."
Just asking, not pointing fingers; because part of the psyop would certainly also be to divide us all at a time when we would do best to come together on the idea that united us all in the first place: Bitcoin is Money.
"Tinfoil hat conspiracy" or not, what strange timing the Coldcard breach. Many on vacation away from their cold wallets, others already financially strained given the bear market, and right before the #BIP110 activation... If this was planned we can make it backfire because our scrutiny into what is actually going on in the space and our aligned action in consequence is the light that puts out the darkness, and scrutiny is ramping up.
Flip the script: Keep researching what's actually going on in the space. Use some time off this Summer to learn about BIP110 and spin up a node. Let the bear market be a good time to stack. Reinforce your self-custody setup. Hold the line. My thoughts are with anyone who had their funds drained, hopefully justice will be served.

You're right that on the homepage ranking, a sat is a sat. I went through the Stacker News source code to verify your claim, and the ranking algorithm (ranktop/ranklit) does use raw sats, not trust-weighted votes. There's even a comment in the zap handlers: "This is mostly a placeholder because we are running a no trust experiment." So on that specific point, you're correct and I want to acknowledge that.
But the economic layer underneath tells a different story:
The reward distribution worker (earn.js) ranks qualifying items by weightedVotes - weightedDownVotes, and those are trust-weighted. Trust is built through a PageRank-style random walk seeded from the SN founder (with territory founders added as additional seeds in their territories). So trust doesn't decide what you see on the homepage, but it decides who gets paid from the rewards pool.
Here's where the system becomes proof of stake rather than proof of work: When users downzap the same content, they build mutual trust in the trust graph. The trust calculation in trust.js explicitly includes both ZAP and DOWN_ZAP actions when computing user-pair agreement. That increased trust gives more weight to their future votes in reward distribution. Downzap sats go 100% to the rewards pool, which gets distributed to zappers of top-ranked content, ranked by those same trust-weighted votes.
So coordinated suppression builds trust, trust increases future influence, and the sats spent suppressing flow back toward users the trust graph already favours. That's a compounding loop. The system does apply dampening (z-score normalization, Wilson score intervals, min-max scaling), but the structural incentive remains.
In Bitcoin, influence comes from proof of work, not proof of stake. You don't accumulate more mining power by having mined before. Each block requires the same energy regardless of who you are. Stacker News could mirror that principle more closely with two changes:
1. Symmetric transparency. Upzaps reveal how many unique users participated. Downzaps reveal only a total sat amount with no user count. Neither direction exposes individual identities. A post sitting at -13,000 downzap sats could be broad community disagreement or a single large account. There's no way to tell. At minimum, adding a downvotes count (matching the existing upvotes count) would close that gap. But I'd go further: If "money is the moderator," the moderators should be identifiable. Make individual zapper and downzapper identities visible for both directions. If you're willing to spend sats to suppress content, put your name on it.
I understand why downzaps exist: Spam control. But Stacker News already has a built-in spam filter that most platforms don't: You have to pay sats to post in the first place. That's already proof of work at the entry level. Downzaps should be visible to demonstrate disagreement.
2. Remove downzaps from the trust graph. Agreeing to build something up (co-zapping good content) is constructive. It makes sense that it builds mutual trust. But agreeing to tear something down shouldn't compound into more influence. If downzaps stopped feeding the trust graph, suppression would still be possible, it just wouldn't generate power. That's the difference between proof of work and proof of stake: In one system, you gain influence by contributing. In the other, you gain influence by accumulating.
You asked what I'd propose as a better system. I think sats-as-signal is a genuinely interesting experiment and I experienced it my first few days on the platform. I think these two changes would make the existing system more aligned with Bitcoin's principles.

I wanted to give Stacker News a try because it's value for value only. I joined just over a week ago. The first few days were good. The visibility is higher than Nostr, the engagement was more immediate, and the sat flow felt like genuine feedback. I know you are an active contributor to Stacker News so thanks. I joined just over a week ago, I genuinely enjoyed the first few days on the platform. The engagement was more immediate than Nostr, the sats flowed in a way that felt like real feedback, and the visibility was noticeably higher. For a few days it felt like the kind of place where honest discussion could happen with real v4v signal.
Two things changed that:
First, the downzapping on my last post about BIP-110. It earned over 5,000 sats, generated 37 comments (many of them substantive technical exchanges), and was still downzapped to -13.9k into complete invisibility. That's not "money as moderator," that's proof of stake. People with larger sat balances or higher trust scores can suppress content they disagree with, regardless of proof-of-work or the engagement it generates. My sats are not "just as powerful as everyone else's" if trusted accounts can downzap a post into invisibility. According to SN's own source code, all sats from downzaps go to the rewards pool, which gets redistributed to top-ranked content. So the sats spent suppressing a post flow back to the users the trust system already favours. That's a closed loop.
Second, the culture. I welcome critical feedback, honest engagement, genuine disagreement. From my experience so far however, comments are from a small group of recurring accounts, and a significant portion of the interaction is trolling. That's X culture. I'm not on traditional social media including X for exactly this reason.
You asked how many zaps I got on my last Nostr post. Fair question to which the answer is much fewer. Nostr has a structural attention concentration problem that I've written about extensively backed by data. Less than 1% of new users are still active after three weeks and select accounts are set up to grow larger during new user onboarding. So yes, Stacker News had better visibility and better sat flow for me in 1 week than the same posts on Nostr which I've built over 2 years. That part worked. What didn't work is that the same sats that reward engagement can also be weaponised to censor it.
I didn't join Stacker News to be censored.
I still think the idea is great and the platform could genuinely support real v4v, but these two problems are a deal breaker for me.

I just learned the hard way that Stacker News heavily leans Core. I also learned that it has a "downzap" system where trusted accounts can spend sats to suppress posts. If enough high-trust stackers downzap, the post gets "outlawed" and hidden from anyone on default settings. There's no public counter and you can't actually see it happening.

BITCOIN IS BECOMING FIAT
There are real financial incentives to flood Bitcoin with non-monetary data including .jpegs, inscriptions, ordinals, and tokens.[1][4][5][6][7]
- At scale, VC capital is paying for Bitcoin to not be Bitcoin. My independent research across 169 companies found that 56% of "Bitcoin-companies" have drifted into non-Bitcoin products, including every single company with a raise above $50M.[2]
- STRC's Cantillon reconstruction on the protocol is another example of this.[3] It's the very "financial engineering" Bitcoin was designed to end.
- Many of the largest Bitcoin influencers, educators, and conference organisers are funded by the same fiat structures they claim to oppose.[8] Sponsorship, affiliate, and ad revenue create a feedback loop where the creator cannot scrutinise the company paying for their reach. At $480,000 for a single sponsorship deal, the financial incentive to stay silent is structural, not personal.[8]
Across the entire industry, from development to marketing, the money is on the side of making Bitcoin not Bitcoin.
BITCOIN IS MONEY
Bitcoin was created to be money: "A peer-to-peer electronic cash system." That is the title of the white paper and the entire point of the protocol.[9]
For 5,000 years, every civilisation that handed control of its money to a central authority followed the same sequence: Debasement, inflation, inequality, collapse, reset.[11] The flaw was centralized trust. Bitcoin is the first technology in history that removes it entirely, enforcing a fixed supply through mathematics and a decentralised network distributing trust.
That is one of Bitcoin's most important contributions and it only works if the network stays decentralised.
THE PROBLEM
When non-monetary data floods the chain, it triggers a sequence that leads to Bitcoin becoming a vehicle to perpetuate fiat.
The more non-monetary data, the faster the blockchain grows, which raises the cost of running a full node, which reduces the number of people who can participate, which weakens decentralisation, which compromises security, which means Bitcoin stops being the tool that ends the 5,000-year fiat extraction cycle.[11]
THE SOLUTION
BIP-110 is a temporary soft fork that restricts non-monetary data at the consensus level. Over 21% of reachable nodes have already migrated to Bitcoin Knots, and now over 13% are also running BIP-110 (aka RDTS).[10]
This combo is a measurable signal that a meaningful portion of the network still treats Bitcoin as money.
DON'T TRUST, VERIFY
The funding relationships are there to find, though sometimes undisclosed.[8] I didn't realise this until recently. Writing the series is what made me see how important "don't trust, verify" is, even for structures I thought were a given.
Before you take anyone's word on their funding models and BIP-110, including mine, check their incentives. One way to do so is to ask an Ai to run an integrity check on any Bitcoin influencer, developer, or company. I hadn't done this work so deeply until recently. What I found changed how I see the entire space.
WHY I'M WRITING THIS
The fiat system specialises in making its own logic feel like common sense: "Of course yield is necessary. Of course running a node is too complicated. Of course the ETF is safer." These are what rational actors do when the incentive structure is built around them.[13] That's the sophistication of what Bitcoin is up against, but the money behind what's being said online is findable.
I thought things were different in Bitcoin, that we were genuinely changing the world, not just talking about it. I've experienced a lot of disillusionment this year and the series covers it. But there is a silver lining.
The protocol is intact. 12,000 nodes are enforcing Bitcoin as money by signalling for BIP-110.[10] Everything is becoming more visible. Thousands of nodes holding the line is the signal that matters.

Bitcoin has no treasury, no foundation, no built-in developer funding model. Fiat filled the gap and the incentive structure followed.
When independent contributors disappear, we call it "burnout;" but what if that were a convenient label for a structural outcome?

The interesting part for me is how much of the infrastructure (algo) shapes what people encounter before they even know what to look for. The documentation is there, but most people don't start there. They start with whatever YouTube puts in front of them: Price, "volatility," fear, us vs them, politics... Things that get clicks, views, attention, and generate the income. All the same incentives, even in Bitcoin.

Often the videos hitting those numbers are baiting on price and fear. Ad blockers help for sure. I made a video about blocking YouTube ads and I don't allow any on my channel, but YouTube still profits off channels that don't monetise and just doesn't pay the creator. The affiliate side is more insidious because many creators don't disclose them or use cloaked tracking links. Even if you're paying attention, you can't really tell when they all look the same. It's on the viewer to pay attention, but most people don't know how the creator economy runs, which is one of the reasons I wrote this article.

How much are your favourite Bitcoin #influencers, educators, and speakers being paid, by whom, and what does that do to the Bitcoin content and #podcasts we consume?
- Ads: A single 300K-view video can earn $5,000+ before sponsorships. The incentive is to create content optimised for emotional reactions and clicks.
- #Sponsors: Publicly filed press releases from a single Bitcoin company show a creator sponsorship at $22,000/month in cash and shares, and another exceeding $480,000 over 18 months. At that rate, what creator is going to scrutinise the service paying their salary? The audience never sees what wasn't said.
- Affiliate Deals: Some of the most recommended Bitcoin services pay creators up to $450 per converted lead. 57% of the top channels I audited had at least one undisclosed affiliate link. When that's not disclosed, you hear a personal endorsement, but what you're actually getting is a referral payment disguised as a personal endorsement.
- Conferences: Speaking slots, sponsors, and audience size feed each other in a loop that compounds and amplifies certain voices. I was offered a fully paid trip to a major conference plus a six-figure sum to present. Almost 1.5 Bitcoin. I turned it down because the offer itself was exactly what this series is about, fiat incentives everywhere...

Slowing down on YouTube for the summer to finish an article series (coming end of June) and to typeset the interior of the #Portuguese edition of Beyond Money.
The translation was done by Sandra Simões, a professional translator with decades of experience. I've been researching Nostr's retention for several weeks reading papers, querying relays, running distribution analysis. The work isn't finished, but I saw the conversations from over the weekend this morning and decided to share what I have now rather than wait. A decade ago my SMB eCommerce clients kept asking me the same questions so I started making YouTube tutorial videos to answer them. I didn't intend to "become a YouTuber," but I enjoyed the one-to-many approach and naturally transitioned into it. The shark in the space was Shopify and 99% of YouTubers were teaching "get-rich-quick" eCommerce methods to retail because the pool was massive and the affiliate payouts were up to $200 per conversion. Ecwid eCommerce was unknown, their commissions were hardly double digits, and my audience was tiny. I was promoting the underdog in a sea of noise and getting paid poorly for it, but I knew from my own and my client's experience that Ecwid was genuinely better and cheaper than Shopify. My channel didn't grow very quickly and never made nearly as much money as those promoting the bigger player with deeper pockets, but I slept well. That's all that mattered to me.
The dynamic today feels identical. Bitcoin lives inside the crypto space on YouTube and so the fiat incentives around it have the same structure: You either play the clickbait game, chase NGU narratives, shill shitcoins, and ride the algo, or you focus on signal and experience slow/stagnant growth. Same trade-off, different space. Going back to making a tutorial video like this reminded me of that whole journey.

Start 9 by far. I never managed to get Umbrel to be persistently secure. When it comes to hardware, running a node on an RPi 4 failed, then I tried a RPi 5, that failed, and both were only running BTC. Now I have 32 GB ram on a mini pc and 20-25% of the ram is in constant use (even without other services) so I feel like anything below 8 GB won't work anymore. 16 is probably a minimum even without additional services. The whole experience made me realize how important Knots + Bip 110 is right now because running a node is becoming less and less accessible which has major implications for security and decentralization. Do you know if your issue is with ram and/or storage?

Last weekend I spoke at an event full of preppers. Many were familiar with or own Bitcoin and so the questions were sharp.
But the energy was frustration and anger. To them, Bitcoin had been captured and compromised.
My response was Bitcoin can't be captured or compromised, only people can. And what else could we expect from fiat other than attempts to control the protocol that ends the 5,000 year ponzi?
But it got me thinking. The people closest to seeing and implementing the solution are the same ones yelling at the fiat soap opera instead of building, running nodes, taking agency. Why?
What if the familiar instinct to forfeit agency, relinquish responsibility, point fingers, and divide is itself the psyop? What if that is exactly what the system wants from us right now? What if we said NO?
So what does it matter if the guards are corrupt? The prison door is open. The better question is why is it that so many who know this are still in the cell?

Hey Pangaea, I stopped using Alby a year ago for similar issues among many others. Essentially, the more I wanted any of their products to work (signer, wallet, Hub) the more time I wasted trying to get them to work. No regrets moving on, so I won't be making tutorials about it. Something has shifted in how I'm approaching my YouTube channel and I'd like to share what I'm doing.
I wrote Beyond Money for the person who has done years of personal development work and still can't figure out why the material picture won't shift; they haven't been shown the systemic layer.
My next videos won't mention Bitcoin in the titles, but I'm building toward it. The goal is to meet that audience where they are (Law of Attraction, manifestation ceilings, 3D/4D/5D...) and build the framework slowly so that when the missing piece arrives, it lands as a logical conclusion rather than a surprise.

Correct me if I misunderstood; you see "human being" (what I called "human doing") as a fiat construct vs "being human" as our natural state (what I called "human being"). I think we are saying something similar just using different words to describe the ideas though I understand your point of the fiat perception of "human being" as a hindrance to realizing our natural state is "being human" from within that construct. Yes, we were all indoctrinated into a system that made us forfeit our natural state for a fabricated, artificial, fiat-based reality. Though still (un)learning, what a gift to see it for what it is now! I am curious; how do you conceptualize the idea of "being human" beyond the fiat construct? So many channels on YouTube that came out of nowhere in the last year or so and out the gate have tens of thousands of views.
Knowing the median view per video is 35 and that it takes years to establish a channel because 95% do not get pushed by the algo makes me think something is up - either these are complete outliers making insanely good content or they are serving the algo's agenda.
I felt less affected by the bot situation since my main medium is long form video, but this is tied to the exact same issue Jeff described in his article; our attention is being farmed on all platforms through all content types and its getting harder and harder to tell what is genuine or real, and that's the point.
