Today's the day! Not just here in the U.S. The U.K. also has a huge protest planned. We shall see how much media coverage either gets.
There will be some who say protests don't matter, but don't let that dissuade you. This is projected to be the largest protest in U.S. history and I'm not sure if it will be record-breaking in the U.K. but it will be very important.
Protests this big are hard to ignore. They also have practical effects: getting people engaged who didn't know so many others were as fed-up as they were. Getting more people to register to vote. Building action networks. Yes, action. And these same folks think of ways in which everyone can participate, because not everyone can physically attend an event. You'd be surprised what a difference a project like "Postcards to Voters" have made.
Anytime this administration has had to back down, it has been due to public pressure. Every time. Yet, there is more criticism of the protest movement from people on the same side, than from those directly opposed. And that's a problem. It's neither helpful nor constructive.
We the people cannot defeat the miltary, or all three branches of government, or the police, nor can we magically force MAGA to see reason. We cannot protest every day, nor participate in a general strike, because the billionaires and those in power would love that: they can easily wait us out, and then really gain control over a desperate people.
I already know I will get pushback for saying this. So be it. I'm doing what I can, where I can, with what I have.

I should have asked this before, but does your library institute fines for overdue books? And do you think eliminating that system, as many libraries have done, is a good thing and encourages a wider group of folks to read, or is it a bad thing, if say, you were waiting a long time for your turn to read something new?
We have fines at one of the library systems I use. You can sometimes get around the automatic return of an e-book by reading offline. I have only done that once, though.
The library sysyem with fines: 20 cents per day, with a maximum fine of $10.00 if it is returned within 90 days. After 90 days, the patron is charged the ten bucks *plus* the replacement cost of the book. (Some are irreplaceable and they've lost some books this way.) Damage fees vary. I've spilled something before on a book, which fortunately only hit the margins. They charged me a few bucks for that.
Fulton County Library is "fine-free" unless the book is lost or destroyed.

So, verdict is: complicated.
The Good News:
I had forgotten that I replaced the old water heater in 2016. So, it's newer than I thought. He says I can wait a bit to replace it, sometime after the guys replace 75 ft of old clay drain pipe in the yard, project sked for June.
The Bad News:
No one uses 5/8ths copper anymore. Need to switch to 1/2 inch current plumbing standard.
Space is tight. No room for any softener system or anything besides a short tank.
Pipes under the house in the crawl space are old and lack a water pressure regulator, required by code. Some of the PVC is from 1967, when it was blue.
Of course this will be a complicated process.
I would say don't buy an old house, but this is generally what you're gonna get on a VA loan. Plus, every house is out of date eventually and has to meet new code.

Y'all are giving me lots of helpful advice. The guy who will inspect the water heater will be here soon. I think I want to continue with the gas tank-style water heater. I will ask about how much sooner a water softening option would reduce the life of the water heater, should I choose to go that route. When you've had hard water for ages, softened water sounds so nice. I have a friend with a saline-infused pool, and the water is glorious. Salt does degrade whatever it's in, however.

I'm getting my water heater inspected today. It's 18 years old, and we have ridiculously hard water, so I think it's pushing it to keep it this long. When do you all replace a water heater? 10, 15, 20 years? Or do you have a tankless system? (Does this make me a "Tankie?") 😁
I'm worried that if I don't do this now, it may fail, and it's not in the garage (or a basement, like many houses). It's smack in the middle of the house, so a leak or failure of any kind could cause a lot of damage. We also lack a water shut-off inside the house. We have to turn it off at the street.

It looks fancy. I've been told it's a data center and that we couldn't stop the deal because it was commercially zoned land, just barely in the next county. They are building it from scratch, whereas the camps seem to be using existing structures, like old warehouses.

At my Rheumatologist's office waiting room, there is a recently installed attractive-looking water feature. It's too noisy for me, but the majority find it relaxing. I remember a study about perception that had participants read an academic paper and rate it. For the authorship of the paper they used either a male name or a female name, and just initials for the control group. Consistently, the exact same paper was rated lower if they thought it was written by a female author.

I feel like this explains a lot about tonight's aurora hit or mainly miss for most of us. It's not enough to have higher geomagnetic activity. You also have to consider the speed of the solar wind and the direction of the solar wind magnetic field.

Article says G4 (out of 5), which is possible, but count on a G3 and be pleasantly surprised if it's greater. Please tell a friend. Every time there's been a really good chance to see the Auroras at lower latitudes for the Northern Hemisphere, or even in Southern Australia for the Aurora Australis, someone misses out and I don't want anyone to miss out on this X class solar flare with a CME actually pointed towards Earth, a perfect set-up. ya know, I never had mozzarella sticks, because of a specific association. When "fried cheese sticks" first became a fad, I worked in a restaurant where they made a hostess dress up like a mouse and give out samples. No one would have humiliated a man like that. Okay, I am a lot more alive today.
If you get the two part Shingles vaccine, make sure you take the next day off, after the second shot. I jinxed myself by saying "Oh, this isn't too bad." For me, the side effects were mild at first: mostly fatigue. It was the next day that it hit, hard. Are you usually aware of all of your bones? Because you will be acutely aware of all of them after the second shot.
Today, the pain is pretty much gone. I just feel rubbery, the opposite of yesterday where I felt like I was made of heavy lumber and somehow had tried to swim the English channel without drowning.
It's still worth it. Shingles is more painful than the side effects of the shot. (If you ever suspect Shingles, you want to get your doc to Rx Valtrex and Neurontin ASAP, before it gets worse.) I've had Shingles twice. It will make you cry.
We don't know exactly how much protection vs. Alzheimer's that Shingrix imparts, but potentially 40%. Why? Because viruses are key and always have been. They are known triggers of many conditions, especially autoimmune, but others, too.
So, get the shots, if you can.

Long biographical story of my mom, on the occasion of her birthday:
Today is my mom's birthday. She is 85 years old, which means she predates the entry of the United States in WWII by almost a year. That blows my mind sometimes
Imagine all the changes an 85 year old has seen over the years. Before marrying, her father had benefitted from FDR's CCC, a New Deal government work relief program that provided much-needed jobs as we crawled out of the Great Depression. Conditions took a long time to improve around the world. The little family started out in a small home in a rural area of the Midwest. Her mother had two vegetable gardens: one for the family, and one to sell to others. Her dad hunted for their suppers, which were often pheasant or squirrel. Her mom eventually got a job for Look magazine. Her father eventually got a job offer to work for a factory in California. They had few possessions when they moved and they made mom auction off her small shoebox of toys, promising her a new toy in California. That was her most cherished possession growing up, a stuffed Panda Bear she named Punkin.
The family started out in Compton. Mom experienced firsthand what racial inequality was like, and the injustice of it informed her politics for the rest of her life. (Much like the shock of coming across her great grandfather's marriage certificate which listed her Hopi great grandmother as "property.")
Just as the Depression lingered longer than history textbooks imply, the 1954 landmark Supreme Court ruling that made educational resources equal and ended segregation in schools did not have an immediate effect. Mom went to school before Plessy vs. Ferguson was even overturned, and the underfunding of Black schools was obvious. Not only was there no library at her school, but no books at home. Mom stole a dictionary and began reading it, to learn on her own.
The family moved to a different suburb soon after, a small home on a quiet street, with a surprisingly huge backyard featuring a grove of avocado trees. There was a cabin out back, where her dad and his friends would smoke cigars and play poker. At one point, he had to step away and he let mom take his place. She had learned by observing, and to everyone's surprise, she won. Besides learning to play poker, her dad taught her how to box, which came in handy when two mean girls wanted to fight her. The school wanted to punish her for defending herself, which they still do today, unfortunately.
She was an excellent student, and fulfilled her dream to attend UCLA, (several years ahead of Lew Alcindor). This made mom the first person in her family to have ever gone to college, let alone graduate school.
Mom met my dad in 1959, and they married a few years later. My dad was in the Air Force at the time, working as a cartographer. He had been stationed in Alaska before it had become a state, and he was so miserably cold there that it was the only state we were never allowed to visit.
Mom took time away from school while carrying me, and returned to graduate school only two weeks after I was born, with no help from anyone. They lived in a tiny apartment with a Murphy bed in the wall, and the only sink was in the bathroom, which is where she had to wash dishes. Our little family moved several times, to the beach and inland, until settling in a rented house and then buying the house next door, where there were often parties and extended family gatherings. Our next door neighbors were gay Nazis, which is a story in itself. Mom was very ahead of her time, and was already teaching me not to ever be racist, and that it was okay for men to be together, perfectly fine for a boy to wear a dress and carry a purse during dress up, and that there was no such thing as boy's or girl's toys.
My little brother was born shortly after my dad finished IBM school. IBM immediately moved us to Minnesota. There, dad worked as a computer programmer, and mom taught English, Speech and Drama at a local high school. She loved teaching and still misses it to this day. She realized that one of her students had run away from home and was living with a family who couldn't afford to care for her. After finding out that the girl's family didn't care that she was gone, mom took the initiative to get her moved in with us. We fixed up a room for her in the basement, and got her some much needed dental care. It was so hard on all of us that we couldn't take her with us when we moved, since we had never formally gotten custody. Mom arranged for her to stay with another family for her last year of high school, and she married soon after.
Mom divorced dad and we all moved back to California. Even though my dad had numerous affairs, my mom was seen by the family as a pariah because she moved into a apartment with her boyfriend, after the divorce He was kind, but didn't last.
Those were lean years. Because of the timing, in the middle of the school year, mom couldn't get a job as a teacher, and began working at IBM. Her supervisor realized immediately that she had untapped potential and she began moving up in the company. My first understanding of politics was when she was incensed that Nixon won re-election.
In a nearby city, she found a house for sale where the older couple were so anxious to sell that they let it go for what was left of the mortgage. Still working at IBM, she became a technical writer. She met a woman at IBM who seemed really cool, avant garde, a social norms rulebreaker. They started a relationship, in the not so welcoming 1970s. IBM sent us to Georgia. We sent the moving van ahead, and took two weeks in a Chinook camper to see the country. It was amazing. Mom directed our tour of the sights and experiences: of course, to visit the Hopi and honor them the best we could, to experience the unique fusion of Pueblo, Spanish, and Mexican food known as New Mexican food, Carlsbad Caverns, The Grand Canyon, the Space Center in Houston (which I thought was the most humid place on Earth until we got to New Orleans).
We eventually settled in Georgia. Two women could not buy a house together, so it had to be in my mom's girlfriend's name. Their relationship lasted ten years.
Mom had to move again, ('cause IBM) this time to Research Triangle Park where she became an information systems analyst, teaching technical writers the industry standards. She traveled extensively, putting the "International" in IBM. There, she met a man who wanted to marry almost immediately (red flag). They lasted four years. He had five children, including triplet boys, but only two came to live with them off and on.
When she retired from IBM, counting down to the minute during the last year, she returned to her first love: art. She had painted over the years, but it was in the fabric arts that her talent took off. She got into art quilting and was with a guild. She had a one woman art show and sold everything. To this day, she undersells her own jaw-dropping artistic talent.
That takes us up to today, where Alzheimer's is a bully that prevents her from doing things she loved, like reading books and creating art. She still has her movies, which she treasures and watches over and over again.
She has requested a small cake from a local specialty market. I think it's the least I can do.
If you've read all this, or even skimmed it, I thank you. I am biased, of course, but I think my mom has led an extraordinary life against all odds (I left out all the really bad parts.) And I'm lucky to know her. If she were not my mom, I would have sought her out as a friend.

Jan. 6th. I remember seeing it unfold on TV and then raising the alarm on social media. It turned out to be much worse than I realized while it was happening.

I know everyone is telling us to rise up and do something, probably something I myself have said to people in other countries, but no one ever says exactly how it should work. For example, does anyone think that the people in Russia like Putin's dictatorship/oligarchy? It's terribly oppressive, yet they don't rise up and overthrow the despot. They are very spread out geographically. They've protested, but they just get thrown in the gulag. They do not hold economic or political power.
People have also not risen up in many other countries, or they have tried and failed (like in Turkey). The people of Hungary are probably well situated to overthrow Orbán, yet he is still in power. It definitely looks like Iran is having a revolution, because those folks have nothing left to lose. I know I was devastated when the Arab Spring did not work. Remember how many people were involved in that? It was not for a lack of trying.
From what I can tell, you have to get the military (and police, if possible) on your side. Economically shutting down the whole country would definitely hurt ourselves, but the ultra wealthy can always wait us out. It's so frustrating. Most U.S. residents live paycheck to paycheck. Honestly, I need help figuring out what to do. I already protest and put pressure on elected officials. I'm sure everyone from the outside looking in would like to see us all in the streets, but without military support, it's a Tiananmen Square situation. I am willing to die for the cause, but it needs to bring about change.

Watching one of the College Football playoff games, and it might be hard for those of you outside the U.S. to imagine just how big collegiate sports are here, how much money they make, and how big some of the universities are. The student body population of Ohio State University (including graduate students) is over 67,000. That's bigger than a lot of cities.

In the U.S. if you received your new medical insurance premium for 2026, how much did it go up? And are you covered through work, or did you buy thru the ACA?
If you'd rather keep it private, but want folks to know how much of a crisis this is, feel free to DM and I will add it as an anonymous reply.
We get our insurance through J's work, and ours went up by $114 per month.
I'm also curious if your premium stayed the same.

Serious question: what do you think would happen, in what order, if the current President of the United States were to be removed from office? He seems to be a whole lot more trouble than he's worth, for the people who have the money and power to pull the strings.
I see the sharks circling in ways I had not before. It would not be hard to justify the use of the 25th amendment to remove him from office. Certainly Peter Thiel would like to see his protégé installed.
There would be backlash, but if sycophants were also replaced in their positions of power, it could go more smoothly than one might expect. Would things get appreciably better? Hard to say. Perhaps the downward slide might even out a bit.

It's amazing how much distance there is between objects in space. I have to think of it in graduated steps: between us and the other planets, between our solar system and other stars, between our solar system and other galaxies. It's amazing how long it takes for our galaxy to make a single rotation.

There's an additional reason not to be on the big social media sites these days, if you live in the U.S. or even if you plan to travel to the U.S.
It starts with surveillance of social media for "deportation leads," and we already know that U.S. citizens and foreign visitors have frequently been caught up in their "need to make quota" dragnet. No one should be kicked out of the country without due process, yet here we are.
It doesn't end there. They've already made it clear that they want to "deport" people based on our (formerly free) speech. The Thought Police aren't coming; they're here.

Today's writing tip, from a reader: your first sentence is crucial. You'd be surprised how many people decide whether to read on, from the first sentence alone.
Personally, I flip to somewhere near the middle to assess the writing quality and style, but most people don't do it that way, I think?
Anyway, it might be intriguing to find out what your favorite first sentences are, of any book you've read.

My review of Son of the Morning, by Akwaeke Emezi. 3 out of 5 stars:
I received a copy of this book directly from Avon, an imprint of Harper Collins.
I've never read this author before, but I've certainly heard of them, and was thrilled at the chance to read their newest novel.
My assessment, having now finished the book, is that it's a mixed bag.
Early on, the descriptive passages eluded me a bit. Certainly, anything supernatural will be esoteric by nature, but I found it hard to discern what it was that the main character was feeling. Also, the constant switching from third to first person and back again was a bit jarring as well.
The character names were way too on the nose: Galilee, full of too much light and living in the town of Salvation, versus Lucifer, full of too much darkness and even going by the pseudonym Helel.
Just as the presentation of the themes were not subtle, the steamy action was not shy at all, either. Those brazen and explicit sex scenes were well-written and should be commended. Not all authors are good at writing them. It is what elevated my rating from 2 to 3 stars.
This genre is not entirely outside my wheelhouse. One of my favorite books has a romance that develops slowly over time, as the protagonists tangle with a paranormal mystery. So, I like the general idea. This, however is different, where the romance itself is paranormal, and does not develop over time, but rather jumps into instantaneous intensity. If you are a reader who wants the lovers to skip the "will they/won't they" part, this will delight you.
I think I might have enjoyed the story more, if it had been more nuanced and more layered, especially if the backstory of the main character had been more developed.
If paranormal romance is your favorite genre, you might really enjoy this.

Those storms last night in the Atlanta Metro area were really something (think the storms raging in Star Trek IV). The rain was blowing sideways with gale force winds, along with powerful lightning, and punishing hail.
The Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest airport in the world, had to evacuate the air traffic control tower, due to high winds and hail, leaving only two controllers in the tower for emergency communication That's not normal. 100 Delta planes had to be pulled for damage assessment due to the wicked hailstorm.
We had four inches of rain over four hours which flooded the interstate (I-75) as well as other major roads, and caused flash flooding. The strong winds caused many trees to fall on power lines and block roads. My flag blew down the street, which has never happened in 35 years of living here. It was like a very short hurricane.
