I'm an environmental economist who researches econ pedagogy to make learning economics marginally less dismal. My pipe-dream is to write a fantasy novel/economics textbook, which is getting closer to reality every day. #economics #TeachEcon #sustainability #DoughnutEconomics #degrowth Profile pic is me smiling in front of a whiteboard with economics gibberish -- cause econ makes me happy. Background is my dog, Freya, who is derpily sticking her tongue out while passed out.

Last Notes npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio “To make it a little more crystal clear, we borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.” - JD Vance, Vice President of the United States of America and complete asshat. It is wonderful this guy is here to help explain #economics to us. I see no downsides to further antagonizing the country where 60% of rare earth minerals - you know the stuff essential for computers and national defense - are mined and 90% are processed. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/15/us-is-unable-to-replace-rare-earths-supply-from-china-warns-csis-.html npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Love that term "slow AI" and agree it's a great model to understand corporations. Going to watch that speech now! [email protected] npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Yes, that sums it up entirely. Especially as people seem to be slaves to the corporation and their interests. Solid analogy. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I also (vaguely, cause I was young and have a memory like a hyperactive goldfish) remember a lot of people speaking out against this war both within and outside the US. But JD gets a hard on for blaming Europe for everything, so I am utterly unsurprised from this bad take from him haha. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio JD Vance says Europe should have done more to stop Iraq War ... yes, I too blame Europe for that disaster. If only Europe were more independent and stopped the US from (largely) unilaterally deciding to attack Iraq. https://www.dw.com/en/jd-vance-says-europe-should-have-done-more-to-stop-iraq-war/a-72250397 https://objstorage.f7it.net/masto1/media_attachments/files/114/342/952/705/230/859/original/45281bb651da033a.png npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio "The paper clip problem" is a philosophical warning about how #AI could run amuck and destroy the world. Imagine an AI programmed with the goal of maximizing paper clip production that gains super intelligence using its vast power to strip mine every ounce of iron and divert resources away from other activities, putting people and environment in existential threat. Now replace "paper clip" with "profits" and "AI" with "CEO" or "billionaire" and you've found the true issue we face. #economics npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I am stoked to see the #Tesla selloff, keep using your economic power for good everyone! But we still have a long ways to go. Looking further out, this massive drop in stock price has just about neutralized the post election boost it had been riding. Tesla is still up 25% for the year, which are depressingly good numbers given the evil Musk engages in. #economics #Politics https://objstorage.f7it.net/masto1/media_attachments/files/114/139/771/743/064/602/original/3451e4b715c500b9.png npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Economic "shock therapy" reliably, *checks notes*, enriches oligarchs who scrap governments for parts like private equity feasts on the Red Lobsters of the business world. Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctone" has more details to put Trump's policy into perspective. "[Trump] is attempting a form of economic shock therapy, while accepting there could be collateral damage." ("Collateral damage" refers to people who are not Trump, like us, fyi.) https://www.axios.com/2025/03/09/trump-economic-shock-inflation-recession-markets #economics #USPol npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Awesome, thanks for sharing that resource as well! @npub13fh…9dct npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Very, very true. Bad incentives, worse outcomes. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I can't imagine it will get any easier to win, unless you have a spare $5 mil of course. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Yeah, I feel like many of us here on the fediverse fall into that category haha npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Want to see (or teach) how hard it is to get a US green card? This game does a good job showing why the green card acceptance rate is around 3%. Today I learned we still ask if the applicant is, or ever was, a communist, and deny accordingly.. https://www.thegreencardgame.com/factor/3e099319-ce70-4cac-ba92-cca53b6e83c2 #politics #immigration npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I know. I am very disappointed by the change and hope we get the message out to everyone who was planning on showing up. I will, at least be out to talk to folks looking like they are searching for a protest and can't find it :/ npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio That would be a hell of a start! npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I'm at an #economics #education conference, and just heard about the changes to the K-12 voluntary standards, and I've got some mixed news about them The bad news is when I asked if they put any effort to make them less neoliberal, they said no. The good news is most of the econ educators in the room thanked me for asking the question, indicating there is strong demand to teach a broader, more realistic, more useful view of economics. #TeachEcon npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I appreciate the rec! npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I'm in the US (Denver). npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio For instance, take this graph showing CO2 contributions by wealth. It's looking at individuals rather than countries, but it captures the relationship well. https://slowrevealgraphs.com/2021/08/10/extreme-carbon-inequality-percentage-of-co2-emissions-by-income-globally/ https://objstorage.f7it.net/masto1/media_attachments/files/114/117/644/784/739/948/original/1cd1cae002f2ee91.jpg npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio The graph you are showing is the "Environmental Kuznets Curve" (EKC) and it's an ongoing debate about how applicable it is. The answer depends heavily on what kind of pollution you are looking at and how you count it. My biggest critique of it is that pollution is most often attributed to where a good is produced, rather than consumed. When you use consumption-based pollution (which I believe is much more important), you see increasing pollution as countries grow wealthier. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Yeah. It would be nice if Reagan fans saw them more often. It may change a few minds, eventually.. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Love it!! The second one particularly stands out to me, but I'm sharing all three with the students leading the charge on this. Many thanks <3 npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Great visual of a pressing problem! npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Something we can play around with for sure :) npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Happy to! Always happy to help answer an interesting question (and add another graph to my personal database 😉) Here is one slice of that story. We certainly see life expectancy for Black men and women leveling off starting in 1985, which is consistent with that story. Still looking for info on money spent per year of life by race and gender. https://objstorage.f7it.net/masto1/media_attachments/files/114/115/774/745/833/712/original/292e7258d1ae80cc.jpg npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio You are not wrong. I'll try to see if I can find a good graph showing that. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio It's got a nice sound to it :) npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Would rearranging it be weird? "Oligarchy tax, not medicade axe" As I write it out, I think it's forcing the rhyme too much and I like your original chant better. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Yes, an easily downloadable data set of all the Tesla fatalities would make a great addition to my intro to stats class, why do you ask? https://www.tesladeaths.com/ #TeachEcon npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I would want all teachers and students to know the costs of AI before making decisions to use it. Environmental costs from energy, pollution and water use: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/ai-has-environmental-problem-heres-what-world-can-do-about And that much of it is based on stolen information (or at least folks have no real ability to opt out) to it making ethically questionable in its creation even if it's 'used responsibly'. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Found an interesting graph with absolutely no relation to current events on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Life_expectancy_vs_healthcare_spending.jpg I forget who I learned this from, but it's pretty useful to add Reagan's face right around 1981 to help understand changes in US over time. #economics #HealthCare https://objstorage.f7it.net/masto1/media_attachments/files/113/624/976/787/282/794/original/34924cd4b820830a.png npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Means testing harms the mean household and is just plain mean, by design. Study after study shows that providing social safety nets - benefits the vast majority of people support - is cheaper and more efficient when you get rid of the hurdles to prove you qualify. Means testing punishes those most in need who are often least able to spend time and energy to complete the intentionally difficult process to access benefits, and results in higher costs. https://www.peoplespolicyproject.org/2022/11/11/universal-benefits-cost-less-than-means-tested-benefits/ #UBI #BasicIncome npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Capitalism's greatest trick was stealing so much of our time that we cannot imagine living without the 'conveniences' it sells back to us. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I've been on here a few years, probably time for an #introduction ! I #TeachEcon, #economics, and #degrowth because it's what I know. I discuss #ClimateChange and #USPolitics because I believe they are important (and #VoteBlue for the same reason). I research #teaching, pedagogy, and grades because incentives matter, especially in #education. I read and #AmWriting #fantasy and #SciFi just for the fun of it. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Unhelpful. Also, for context, I was arrested when linked arm and arm with students on my campus. While not biologically my kids, it has similar emotional connection, to me at least. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio As tensions rise over protests and foreign policy, please remember we don't need to 100% agree to be on the same side. Far-right fascists are mobilizing and authoritarian countries are weaponizong the #Gaza war to weaken democracy. These are far bigger threats than the fellow liberals who happen to have come down on the other side of this complex and highly-emotional topic of #Palestine and #Israel. Good people can and do disagree, so it may be helpful to tone down the angry rhetoric. npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio Prevention is (almost always) cheaper than treatment, and homelessness does not break this rule. Economists recently used a randomized control trial to estimate the effectiveness of giving households on the brink of homelessness cash to prevent it, $2000 on average. The results of this temporary assistance were a 73% reduction in the risk of homelessness after one year and that each dollar spent generated $2.47 in benefits to the community. #economics #poverty https://news.nd.edu/news/targeted-prevention-helps-stop-homelessness-before-it-starts/ npub165ct04kdzaq7wtqsqthqawk5cygyamgfusv0m4mr2tusqhm4v88q9ltdlq Kyle Montanio I was today years old when I learned that US schools are more segregated today than they were in 1968. Racial segregation due to racist policies (like red lining) and reinforcing economic conditions (like school funding tied to property taxes) ensure a system of oppression that is, in many ways, getting worse.
