I hear you. I want nostr to be embedded in our entire civilization too.
But for now in nostr's adoption cycle, we're more likely to confuse or turn people off ("gross, another crypto grift") than convert them.
I think its perfectly reasonable to have a valuable product that people adopt and love and purple pill the shit out of them in the developer docs when they're ready sold and curious to learn more.

I hear what you’re saying but how many bad product marketing pages has things like “written in Go” or some other programming language/implementation detail some nerd thought was relevant but didn’t affect the product?
Buzz didn’t need to use nostr. The marketing page listing benefits and features would be the same regardless if it were a nostr relay or a some REST server.
But nostr is cool, and I think they should find a way to make it more enticing like “infinitely extendable” showing off how a whole open ecosystem of tools and agents can use the data generated by buzz.
Idk bad example I’m not a marketer but basically if you put nostr on the marketing page you should tie it to a use case the average customer genuinely cares about.

People need to have a problem before they have enough awareness to begin searching the market for alternatives and substitutes.
I agree there’s a lot to be built, but simply building stuff nobody is looking for isn’t going to create demand.
If there’s a bunch of people who get censored, or lose access to an api they built a business on, or some other side effect of centralization, it’s better to build features for that group of people that currently in need and searching for alternatives.
People didn’t join nostr in the early days because primal was feature rich and ready with a good UX. They joined because twitter failed them and they were willing to deal with rough edges if it meant they wouldn’t get burned again.
There’s a million things you could theoretically build, so why not build the things people might be looking for right here and now?

to be clear, i think its only "dead" if nobody uses it.
but... i would consider anything that has organic growth to be "alive".
like nobody has to go around and http/smtp-pill people anymore. those networks have network effects and grow and sustain themselves on their own.
maybe we're just incubating?! it still feels early, unpolished, and without any sort of product market fit.

I can definitely understand this from your side of the equation. I would prob trust a some stranger enough for them to hold a little of my pocket change.
But even if they are trustworthy and not a dick, i doubt its profitable to run a mint for people's pocket change. I imagine if routing fees are gonna float you, you'd need much larger reserves.

If I understand it right, in the US any business that would run a mint would have to obey KYC/AML laws because they have unilateral control of funds... yet would be unable to comply due to the nature of ecash.

Interesting. Will have to do some thinking to see how it lands here.
First impression is that L402 is “closed” as in every service provider can set their own rules, yet “permission-less” since no third party is needed between buyer and seller.
I could be wrong… dumb human here. Consult Claude for higher level thinking 😅

The macaroon spec has been pretty formalized by Google since 2014, but really there hasn’t been enough adoption to uncover or establish best practices.
But, if successful, one can easily imagine interacting with all their web services as if they were cash businesses.
Pay, get access to whatever you paid for. No need for service providers to build a “user” table or collect payment info. The authorization token with each request tells the server everything it needs to know. Totally stateless.

As far as I can tell, you’re good!
IMO the real rabbit hole for devs selling services to humans or agents via L402 is macaroon construction.
Basically in exchange for sats, what does the token grant access to and how much/how long?
It’s not rocket science, it’s just different reasoning than most devs are used to.
Kinda like bitcoin or nostr, you need to unlearn a bit before you can appreciate its design.

A bootstrapper's only job is to build their idea and test it with the free market.
Bitcoin removes nearly every point of friction.
New ideas don't need a registered business and a bank/stripe account.
Bitcoin and the internet has no boarders, you can reach customers in every country.
Savings grow instead of getting inflated away. Raising money becomes a choice, not a requirement.
Your customers will have a killer UX. One click pay/onboarding. No reason to sign up yet another account with Nostr and L402.
And with AI agents, your total market grows faster than the human population.
