Nostr is bigger than people think.
We estimate 20k+ active humans on Primal. What does that mean for Nostr? Maybe 50k, maybe more?
People who count active users based on posting activity within a given web of trust are underestimating the number of real humans on Nostr by an order of magnitude. Remember: most people don’t post, and many humans don’t have enough followers to be included in the WoT.

Since we shipped Primal 3.0 two weeks ago, nearly 14,000 users have migrated to the new Spark-based wallet. The migration process has worked well, and we feel that we are now ready to set the official sunset date for the old wallet: the custodial wallet service will be discontinued on April 30, 2026.

We don’t impose any balance limits in the new Primal wallet.
However note that it is designed to be a casual spending wallet. We recommend that larger amounts are stored on chain and preferably on a hardware wallet. I personally prefer the ColdCard; it’s the gold standard for self custody.

So far all Primal users who encountered the zero balance problem were able to restore it in Wallet of Satoshi. After that, their Primal wallet started showing the correct balance.
If you tried this and it DIDN’T work for you, please respond in the comments here.
As a reminder, if you are affected by the zero balance issue, you don’t have to restore your wallet in WoS, you can simply wait for this to be resolved on the Spark side. Funds are not at risk.
We will keep you posted.

PSA: We are investigating the issue where some Primal-Spark wallets are erroneously showing zero balances, like Hodl’s wallet below. Here is what we know so far:
1. Funds are not at risk. If you restore your wallet in Wallet of Satoshi you should see your full balance.
2. In our tests, after restoring in WoS, the balances started showing correctly in Primal again.
3. We are working with the Spark team and expect that regular wallet operation will be restored after an update to the Spark network. If this turns out to be the case, you won’t need to update your Primal app.
We don’t yet know what caused this issue. Over 5000 of our users already upgraded to the new wallet and there was a lot of zapping related to Maxi Madness and in general. Not sure if that somehow overwhelmed Spark.
If you are affected by this, please report your experience here in replies. We will publish another update as soon as we have any new information.

On the establish connection screen, you can go to permissions and set Low Trust. That will prompt you for every sign request. You can optionally add each requested kind to the allow list if you don't want to get prompted for it in the future.

Yes, rich transaction rendering for incoming zaps was not a part of the initial 3.0 release. We just figured out how to do this with the Spark-based wallet, so this feature will be included in the next patch release (probably early next week).

You seem concerned about “surveillance and top-down control” yet you offer a YOLO custodial service without any legal basis. You just decided one day you’ll custody people’s money?! And despite being such a privacy advocate, you didn’t go with hosting a Cashu mint, but the old school “I’ll monitor all my users’ activities”.
Rizful suffers from the worst type unaccountable control and surveillance risk possible. Many such services have been shut down or have rugged their users. People are incomparably safer on Spark than with Rizful.

Quick note on why we chose Spark and Breez for the new Primal Wallet.
Let’s start with our requirements. We need a simple, reliable, zero-config spending wallet that just works out of the box. Anything less than that is a non-starter for our target audience of casual social media users.
Those who have used Primal’s custodial wallet over the past couple of years will agree that we were able to meet these requirements. The big tradeoff was that, in order to legally offer a custodial service, we had to KYC our users, impose balance limits, and deny service in certain regions where we didn’t have a license to custody funds.
Building on Spark via the Breez SDK enabled us to deliver a wallet that is a strict improvement for our users: no KYC, no limits, and available globally. It’s interoperable with other Spark-based wallets — so you can use the same seed phrase in Primal, Wallet of Satoshi, Cake Wallet, and others. This undeniably gives a lot more agency to our users.
There is ongoing debate about what constitutes “real” self-custody. Spark uses a federation of operators and provides unilateral exit. From a legal standpoint, this clears the self-custody threshold. That said, nothing matches the self-sovereignty of holding bitcoin funds on-chain. Primal is a spending wallet, not meant to hold large amounts. We always encourage our users to store their savings in self custody on-chain.
I believe the wallet we shipped with Primal 3.0 offers the best set of tradeoffs available today. The good news is that our new wallet architecture enables us to easily add support for Ark, Cashu and other protocols in the future. If you have specific suggestions for how we could do better by our users; if you think there’s a better way to legally deliver a simple, reliable, zero-config spending wallet that just works, let us know and we’ll be happy to explore it.

Most devs choose "Login with Nostr". If you're on iOS where the only functional signer is Primal, and you detect that Primal is installed, then "Login with Primal" is fair game imho.
In any case, it' all works over the open NIP-46 spec.

Yes, our signer is built on the standard NIP-46 spec. We follow the spec precisely, there is nothing proprietary in our implementation.
You don't need to trust Primal with your nsec; our entire stack is open, so you can see precisely how we handling it. The idea behind building a signer is precisely to minimize the need for our users to paste their nsec into any new nostr app they wish to try.

I think it's a good idea to prompt the user to confirm if pasting the fully qualified URL is what they actually wanted.
We never want to assume we are smarter than the user and just automatically replace the content they pasted, but prompting seems like the right balance in this case.
