There's this one thing that I often wonder about when trying to write content that is about tech stuff that is comprehensible to the average viewer. I know I can't use myself as a benchmark, even myself as a smol child, because I was proven time and time again that that's setting the bar too high, but I'm wondering
How low does it need to go? We all assume the reader can... Read. The language. We also assume that the reader can function in daily life. Therefore they have to have intact basic reasoning. So the question becomes, what is basic knowledge? Is being able to tell apart companies considered technical knowledge? Like, is it too much to expect the average user to understand that eg. Google and Microsoft are different and often competing companies? That isn't technical knowledge, that's if anything, economics, or basic capitalism in our capitalistic world, so I shouldn't have to explain that, right? Yet I still see things that say that regular users think that Computer = Internet = Browser = Microsoft = Google, and then ask questions that assume things like that Microsoft or Google control their ISP or vice versa, or other various random things, like eg. "ISP down -> computer broken -> bring computer to repair store" ??? Or the usual tale of "oops I forgot to plug it into the wall" or "oops I forgot to turn it on" ? Like, in those cases I understand it that the regular users *know* that they were supposed to plug it in and turn it on, and just forgot to?
I do not comprehend how the way that "regular users" behave around computers can function in daily life. Understanding basic cause and effect, like, *I need to plug in the thing that needs electricity into electricity or it will not run* and *if I don't turn it on it will not turn on*, surely, are all basic skills? Or, to bring it more back into computer land, is the understanding of things like "to turn off the computer, I click the button to turn it off" considered an advanced skill? Is being able to copy paste text considered an advanced skill? Opening up a search engine?
Or basic pattern recognition. Does this cable plug look like it'd fit into that hole? No? THEN WHY ARE YOU JAMMING IT IN AND ASKING WHY IT ISN'T WORKING? Would they fail the "square goes into square hole, circle into circle hole" test? I'm just, confused at this point.
And yea, I know that the fediverse (esp. whoever my post will reach) are generally considered "computer touchers" simply for knowing what fedi even is (or even having have heard of Mastodon, yet alone knowing that it isn't called Mastodon but fedi), but I gotta wonder if anyone has any insight. Is it that regular users could absolutely figure out how to do basic things on a computer, but it's easier for them to ask for help with every basic task than spending a bit of time clicking buttons in the computer to see what happens, and this is just an NT vs ND thing?

Who is this aimed at? Nobody thought that stock Android was open, did they? Why are they suddenly complaining about it *now*? Complain about Google... Locking it down, not that Google has the ability to lock things down, cuz they always had that. An extended verification service added to Android is not the bad thing. GMS is, as always, the bad thing. They always had a thing that is always running in the background, calling home, and lets Google run arbitrary code on your device with system perms at any time in the background silently, and the thing they complain about is an addition of a verification service into Android??? Not the... Backdoor... Locking things down??? Why???
There's not even a need to explain anything too "technical" (I presume stuff that I figured out by touching Android for a few months as a child when I got my first phone that would take 1-2 paragraphs is too technical for the average user, because I presume the average user barely knows how to read and still thinks that computer = browser = internet = Google = Microsoft) compared to what already is there. Complain that Google is using the existing control they have over vendor-approved installs of the operating system to enforce developer verification on most of the userbase, not that they are *adding* that control, they always had it. Official builds of Android were never open. Why pretend that they were?
Is the goal here to make Google look nice if they step down on the developer verification more and make it look like they are opening up a thing that was never open just by returning it back to how it was to try to convince Google to not do this one bad thing so they can silently keep doing the 300 other bad things they were already doing whilst being celebrated as open? Google doesn't *give* a fuck about their PR, clearly, they removed "Don't be evil" ffs. Sigh.
Also I'm curious what will Huawei do/is doing, given iirc they don't ship Google Android builds, nor GMS? Seems that they handrolled their own version, separate from Google? Do I need to figure out LinkedIn to get a job?
I guess I need to get my infra up again, write some simple but flashy projects, make a CV, send lots of emails, and hope for the best?
I'm not exactly prime employee material on account of being AuDHD and disabled, but I'm good at computers (I'd say being able to jump into any codebase and work on fixing issues within a week, even if it is a language I don't know and a codebase I don't know, even if the codebase is huge, is quite a good skill. It worked on WebKit and I barely know C++ /shrug)
I've been thinking of writing a few simple projects (simple is relative; I call it simple cuz it takes me only a week, but others might consider it impressive?), maybe finally reporting the Linux 0day I have lying around
I need a job within 2 months or I'm back to living in trains...
