especially if the business serves other businesses, shutting down can be helpful. the goal of a strike is to jam the gears, and even b2b services dropping out can help that happen.
if it's a storefront, a big sign saying "our workers are on strike today and they have every right to be, see you tomorrow" is good for solidarity.

Patreon is also not a complete solution, at least not for me. I post my content to a bunch of other places and then point back to the patreon for "subscribers can read one chapter ahead" which works distressingly well for collecting an audience. But it's a LOT of posting to a lot of sites.

I've had a patreon for forever, since they opened registration for plebes like me, and here's the thing about patreon:
a) the website and the company seem to be held together with baling wire, lots of things are not quite as put together as youd think theyd be, and sometimes they drop the ball.
b) …but theyre still going, after a decade of slip-shod mostly-operational mostly-good decisions. Which is noteworthy, i feel, in our era of disposable internet services.

Yeah it's... weird. I'm still unsure about it.
It's basically, "here's an ActivityPub feed for your photos, and also a portal through which to view photos on other ActivityPub feeds." The web client displays photos a little nicer than the mastodon web client, sure.
But... I'm still not sure why I want all my photos in a different silo, or why I'm now managing two different follow lists. I don't yet see the benefit... but that's also not stopping me from posting selfies. ;)

thing i wish id been told earlier and more forcefully:
transition happens in waves.
youll have months where its big and huge and everything you think about, and then youll have months when it recedes and things get comfortable.
its easy to think, at that low ebb, that maybe youve got to the other side of the initial hard parts. you havent. itll come back. more stuff will happen, youll muddle through Big Thoughts.
its marathon, not a sprint.
