Wilberforce was a man of real character who stayed true to his beliefs till the end of his life: unlike most public figures, who cannot resist the lure of titles, honours and material rewards, who then ultimately believe all the flattery they are being paid and thus succumb to vanity, Wilberforce lived by his convictions till his death.

Äußerst lebendige, als romanhafte Autobiographie erzählte Darstellung des Lebens des römischen Kaisers Claudius. Intellektuell seiner Zeit voraus, verdankte er sein Kaisertum zahlreichen Wendungen und Zufällen. Als Kaiser erdachte er nicht nur zahlreiche Verbesserungen für das Römische Staatsgebilde, er trug auch wesentlich zur Eroberung Britanniens bei. Sein Vertrauen zu seinen Mitmenschen wurde bedauerlicherweise allzu häufig enttäuscht. Die vorliegende Übersetzung ist gegenüber dem Original stark gekürzt, das Ergebnis ist dennoch lesenswert --- allerdings wünscht man sich im Nachhinein, den kompletten Bericht gelesen zu haben.

Book recommendation:
Saifedean Ammous
The Bitcoin Standard
Well-written book not only about Bitcoin, but much more about economics and monetary theory in general. As a mathematician I was not at all convinced by Keynes' theories taught at university, especially because attempts were made to justify them with models that looked like a mathematical proof, but which to me seemed more like window dressing, as they often lacked a logical basis. Ammous, on the other hand, represents the “Austrian School”, whose arguments seem logically consistent, and therefore economic theory makes more sense again.

Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy
You can't put this book into any category, and its originality alone makes it worthwhile reading. I at once could identify several times with experiences the author had with the medical profession, and I already had come to similar conclusions. For example that it is important to become your own doctor (except in cases of injury), especially concerning your general well-being, because you know yourself best. But to do this, you have to listen to your body and understand its real needs. Therefore it is also important to understand the relationship between diet and health.
The book includes a at times beautifully poetic description of self-healing and self-discovery after a diagnosis of cancer. I do not agree with every point the author makes. But you don't have to. And even the author does not want you to. He wants you to find your own way by yourself, by starting to discover your own self and what really is best for you. He just wants to give an example how he did it in his case. Everyone has to find his own solution. I hope that this will become a well known truth for some future generations. Apart from that, modern medical research starts to see how right he was decades ago about nutrition and cancer.
And by the way: Since my childhood I've been a big fan of "The A-Team" in which Dirk Benedict starred in: individuals working as a team for a good cause, freeing people from suppression so that they can regain control of their lives. But each team member still is a strong individual based on his own needs and wishes. And watching it still is a lot of fun.

Ein lesenswerter Roman, der Kindheitserinnerungen wach werden lässt und genauso den Erwachsenen anspricht, der tiefer blicken und mehr über die Hintergründe der über 60 Jahre alten und doch immer noch spannenden Story erfahren will. Überdies eine sehr fachmännische und historisch korrekte Darstellung des Beginns des Raumfahrtzeitalters, das erst nach drei Vierteln des Buches mit der Apollo 8-Mission die reale Zeitline verlässt und in das "Perryversum" wechselt. Aber selbst danach wird Wert darauf gelegt, die nun fiktive Story auf gut durchdachte Weise zu schildern und in den damaligen historischen Kontext einzubinden.

Stellenweise immer noch aktuelle Darstellung verschiedener Zusammenhänge, insbesondere was die Wirkung von Verdrängung bei traumatischen Erfahrungen betrifft. Interessant ist auch Freud's Vorhersage, dass Mediziner sich "chemische Stoffe [wünschen werden], deren Verabreichung bestimmte Neurosen produziert und aufhebt[, auch wenn] die Wahrscheinlichkeit ... nicht für solche Lösungen des Problems [spricht]." Denn eine rein chemische Behandlung psychischer Zustände mag zwar einzelne Symptome verändern, aber die wahre Ursache wird damit in der Regel ignoriert, wodurch auch keine grundlegende Heilung möglich ist.
