Yeah, when installing new versions, mac gives a warning that I'm running something downloaded from the dirty internet and not their clean app store, however it always installs after clicking through. If this were to pass, it'd be different?

Making a distinction between the 3 main CJ implementations might clear this up a bit.
The CJ txns in question are samourai/ashigaru tx0 transactions, not JM or wasabi txns. The latter two don't depend on op_return.
For the first two, the initial transaction, known as tx0, uses op_return in a size that AFAIK exceeds said filtering attempt. Tx0 gets UTXO's into uniform pre-determined sizes, and initiates coordination with other collaborators.

These two have become conflated, IMO, and it's lamentable. They're two separate topics...it's possible for someone to have the opinion that one is a good idea and the other isn't.
Reminds me of 2016-17 when Roger Ver would conflate reddit "censorship" with his frustrations regarding the lack of consensus for a hard fork to increase base block size.
Being out of consensus becomes quite costly, in a hurry. A lot of people learned that the hard way in 2017-18. Seems like some people are gonna learn that later this year.

Remember a year or two ago when JPow was asked "why 2% inflation target?" in a congressional hearing, and he danced around, saying how getting people to think it's gonna be 2% makes it more likely to trend toward 2% via self-fulfilling prophecy, and never answered the question of why 2% is beneficial for people?
It's the rate of theft they think they can get away with...that sweet spot of max theft coupled with low enough risk of people catching on.
People fight accepting this fact so hard...

Greetings Bitcoiners! Happy White Paper Day!
What's white paper day, you might ask? On Halloween 2008, 17 years ago today, Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin white paper on a cryptography mailing list. He/she/they had made references about working on a novel peer to peer money and payments system in this very specific corner of the internet, and October 31st, 2008 is when it was actually released. I don't know about you all...cryptography mailing lists were not one of the places I was hanging out in 2008. Suffice it to say, Bitcoin was not on the radar of many at that time.
In it, Satoshi describes a new network of nodes that allows for peer to peer transactions, in contrast to transactions that necessitate trusting a third party, as is the case for banks, credit cards, and modern fiat payment apps. All of the parts that Satoshi put together were existing technologies. The novel idea was how Satoshi combined digital signatures, peer to peer networking, game theory, economics, and proof-of-work (PoW) to create Bitcoin.
There's a memorable scene in the movie Flash of Genius, which is a biographical drama about Robert Kearns, the inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper. Ford more or less stole his invention, and Kearns sued them over it. In the courtroom scene, Ford's lawyers argued that the components of the intermittent wiper motor were all standard electronic components that anyone could freely purchase from RadioShack and assemble themselves, therefore Kearns' argument shouldn't hold water, since he only devised a certain way to string them together. Kearns (played by Greg Kinnear) pulled out a copy of A Tale of Two Cities, and read the first sentence..."It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". He argued, did Dickens invent the word "it"? No. Did he invent the word "was"? No, and so forth. Kearns argued, it's how Dickens strung them together that's meaningful in this circumstance, he argued, and this "flash of genius" moment is what distinguishes a novel idea.
Satoshi incorporated various existing technologies in such a way in the white paper. Each component was an existing technology, however, no one ever had the idea or gumption to string them all together in such a way as to make something so profound. A critical component is PoW, invented by Adam Back. Through PoW and digital signatures, Satoshi invented, some say discovered, digital scarcity. Until then, anything digital was infinitely copyable, which made digital cash impossible. Payments relied on trusted third parties to be the arbiters of truth. This is an incredible power that financial intermediaries alone possessed. Like Prometheus stealing fire from the gods and giving it to man, Satoshi released a knowledge onto the world that could never be undone. If you're familiar with that portion of Greek mythology, and what the fate of Prometheus was for this action, it's unsurprising that Satoshi wanted to stay pseudonymous, eventually disappearing completely in late 2010.
The white paper is only 8 pages long, 9 pages including references. The first 2 pages are pretty easy to grok, and then it goes further under the hood. Page 3 brings up proof-of-work (PoW). Today happens to be the best day of the year to check it out if you never have before.

Since the majority of bitcoin exists in self-custody wallets, the BIS is proposing that the majority of bitcoin should be considered "bad" bitcoin.
Why stop at bitcoin? They should be able to say which cars, houses, pieces of art, or gold coins are "bad" too!
To them, value isn't subjective and determined my market participants...it's whatever the hell they say it is.

Whether the play store hammer is actually coming down or not, it is a great mental fire drill of what your phone wallets becoming inaccessible would mean.
Some people I've orange pilled (well, up to the point of stacking at least some sats, anyway) have everything on a phone wallet. Gonna reach out to them and tell them to check on their seed word backups...make sure they still have them, and they're legible.

There have been past instances of some company claiming they're now accepting bitcoin/crypto, and when going through the PoS process, you had to either log into coinbase and pay through them, or connect your crypto wallet via some metamask BS...no option to just show an invoice address and amount (or lightning invoice) and pay via wallet of our choice like we're all used to.
Theres the interoperable/sovereign way to do it, and there's the KYC/cucked way to do it.

Some news items...
US Department of Labor no longer discouraging holding bitcoin in retirement plans: Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said in a statement, “We’re rolling back this overreach and making it clear that investment decisions should be made by fiduciaries, not DC bureaucrats.” I'd take that a step further and say decisions should be made by sovereign individuals, however it's good to see that the DOL is taking their thumb off the scale in this regard. A few short years ago, among most fiduciary or financial advisor circles, it was disallowed or considered a faux pas to even bring up the subject of bitcoin to clients, let alone recommend an allocation to it. Now, the tide is shifting, and the opposite is becoming true...it is becoming a faux pas to not have a portion of clients' portfolios in bitcoin. Self custody is always preferred, however, financial advisors aren't going to recommend things that aren't in their wheelhouse (or, being cynical, don't make them money). If a car salesmen knows that a specific Chevy model is the best fit for you, and he happens to work for a Ford dealership, a Ford is going to be what he recommends. People being able to purchase ETF shares in their legacy retirement accounts, and being encouraged to do so by financial professionals, is a step in bitcoin's path from 0.2% of global assets (where it sits now) to 2% (parity with gold) and beyond.
TFTC launches "Opportunity Cost" browser extension: This new browser extension from Mary Bent, host of Tales From the Crypt and Rabbit Hole Recap podcasts, senses when the fiat price of an item is displayed in your browser, and displays the value in sats along side. This is reminiscent of a site that came out a few years ago that shows the bitcoin value of certain items over the years (warning, potentially NSFW).
Bitcoin Core removes -datacarrier option from their node software: As the "spam wars" continue, the Bitcoin Core team is taking another step towards removing user options for how they relay transactions. See the newsletter from May 21st regarding the op-return debate...this is another facet of this mess. If you run a node and aren't a fan of these changes that Core is implementing, you can exercise your freedom of choice by either running an older version of Bitcoin Core, or by running a non-Core implementation such as Bitcoin Knots. Not your keys...not your coins. Not your node...not your rules.
Solo miner mines a block: a solo miner found a block two weeks ago and was paid 309 million sats by the network. Usually when a story pops up that a solo miner found a block, which currently happens every few months, the presumption is that it was someone who's running a single machine at their house. In this case, however, it was someone who had rented a large amount of hashrate (mining power) to the tune of 260 petahashes/second. How much mining power is that? Well, the beefiest machines that a home miner would be running these days is in the ballpark of 200 terahashes/second. That means this person was running over 1000 machines when he found this block. How much would that cost to run? Well, if you have typical PA residential power costs, about $13k/day. The solo mining pool they used, soloCK pool, suspects that they were renting the hashrate. Although this person found a block, it's doesn't quite have the same panache as when someone running one machine at their house finds a block. Interesting nevertheless.
Don't understand what bitcoin nodes are, or why people run them? Don't understand how bitcoin mining works? Coming to a meetup and chatting with bitcoiners is a great way to learn these potentially intimidating topics. And, we have things to learn from you too! Every bitcoiner's path is unique, and every bitcoiner started out as a humble nocoiner.

First thought...anyone on Android and wants to run an app that's dropped from app stores can just get an apk file, install from that, and pass that file along to friends to continue use if it's dropped from app stores!
Second thought...the venn diagram overlap of people who are interested in using TikTok and people who know how to side load an app from apk file is probably rather thin.

Happy Genesis Block Day!
Sixteen years ago today, Satoshi mined the first bitcoin block, known as the genesis block. When a miner finds a block, there's a small text field in which they can put whatever message in it they want. Modern mining pools usually use the name of their pool. Satoshi chose the following for block #0:
The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks
There are two reasons for this. By including that day's headline from a major newspaper (London's The Times), Satoshi timestamped the block that he cast. This proved that he/she/they hadn't been mining on their own, keeping the mined blocks a secret, and preventing others from competing to mine for those new bitcoin. The crux of this reason is that it shows that it was launched fairly and on the date that he broadcast it to the network. The second reason is more symbolic: the 2008 financial crisis, and the government bailout interventions that followed, represented a breach of trust and alienated many, including Satoshi:
"The root problem with conventional currency is all the trust that’s required to make it work. The central bank must be trusted not to debase the currency, but the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of that trust.”
The white paper laid out the framework for bitcoin: a new digital asset and decentralized payment network that doesn't rely on having to trust entities that have repeatedly proven themselves untrustworthy.
Several years ago, bitcoin educator and podcaster Trace Mayer first proposed and promoted Proof of Keys Day, corresponding with the anniversary of the genesis block. The idea is that whoever has bitcoin on exchanges should withdraw them on January 3rd every year, and in doing so, force exchanges who might be running a fractional reserve to be exposed.
IMHO, Proof of Keys Day is a great idea, and every bitcoiner should know the difference of what it means to hold their own wealth vs some exchange's IOU for bitcoin. However, bitcoiners who know this important distinction very likely don't keep sats on an exchange in the first place. If you do happen to have bitcoin on an exchange and want to celebrate Proof of Keys Day by making the exchange prove that they have the bitcoin they say they do, and you are comfortable and familiar with your self-custody setup, by all means please celebrate and withdraw! I do wonder about how many people realistically (1) have a bitcoin balance on an exchange, (2) are comfortable with self-custody and have software or hardware wallet, and (3) have Proof of Keys Day on their radar. I think this happens pretty regularly in the global south...IIRC, 2/3 of US printed $100 bills are held outside the US, not because they're transacted with, but because it's a way for people to store value in a way that's better than their lousy local gov't paper.

No one who runs a node would ever want to HF to dilute themselves, and in the process, undermine the inflation schedule everyone's been opting into since 2009.
Unless, ofc, one expects to find it more profitable to spin off a shitcoin that one can exert undue influence over. S2X companies were in this position in 2017, had their own client and repository, and pulled out at the last minute b/c they realized that being out of consensus is gonna be more costly than they were expecting. Ver & crew tried it anyway, to their detriment.
If I were a betting man, which I am, I'd say it's realistic to expect Blackrock to try this at least once. Beauty of hodling your own sats is that you share in the outcome of both sides...bitcoin and cuckcoin/inflationcoin/happycoin/ESGcoin/Larrycoin

TIL: Nasdaq-100 is a stock index that holds the top 100 non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. This index is tracked by many passive index funds, notably mega-ETF QQQ. Being in this list is a big deal for a publicly traded company, as it means that lots of funds will be buying their shares irrespective of price/PE/opinion, because they have to own what's in the index. The index is reassessed periodically (quarterly?) for who belongs and who doesn't, and they have 3 substitutions this month.
In: Microstrategy, Palantir, and Axon Enterprise
Most of you are familiar with MSTR. Palantir sells spyware, and Axon is a tech/weapons company whose best seller is the Taser.
Out: Illumina, Super Micro Computer, and Moderna.
Illumina develops genetic research products, SMCI makes AI hardware, and Moderna was one of two companies who brought COVID vaccines to market.

this info might be too late for today's visit...ask if the vet can write you a prescription for you to bring to a pharmacy of your choosing...you'll get charged way more for meds at a vet vs a pharmacy.
no hate on vets, a big chunk of their profits come from selling meds, and they're entitled to make revenue. that said, once you know you can get 100 caps of gabapentin from your pharmacy for $15 or the vet for $75, it's an easy choice, especially for maintenance meds.
also, metacam is brand name liquid vet form of meloxicam, and expensive. human meloxicam tabs are super cheap.
some vet drugs don't have an exact or close equivalent that pharmacies carry. most do though, so always ask.

The block size war was indeed a case when the will of the majority of network participants won out over a few very powerful actors. If the magnificent 7 wanted to hard fork the internet, so to speak, and coordinated, it would happen. Bitcoin resisted such an attempt.
Economic nodes were a big part of winning the blocksize war. Sure, individual node runners ran and signaled UASF. The nail in the coffin for S2X was exchanges declaring the original fork is BTC, and listing futures markets for the fork tokens, which demonstrated the market valued BTC way more than S2X.
Holding BTC doesn't give one control over the network directly...fiat incentives can begin to exert negative influence over the network though. The economic nodes are a big part of how things have played out and will play out.
Worst case scenario...a new soft fork is built and disseminated to miners and exchanges (which are most of the economic nodes) that only permits paying to addresses on a KYC-ed and approved list kept and updated by some govt agency. Will that create a chain split? You bet. Each fork, bitcoin & cuckcoin, will have a different value. The network effect power will trend towards the economic value of each chain.
No one stayed with bcash after a few years...messy, but ultimately definitive. It'd be a much messier situation in the scenario above.

Roger is attempting to give himself the credibility he had in 2015, and totally ignoring that he was one of the architects of the bcash mess. He owns bitcoin dot com, and in 2017 started hawking bcash as if it were bitcoin. To this day, people are misled by this. The market speaks for itself regarding its value vs bitcoin, and anyone who was persuaded or misled by Roger has far less bitcoin now because of it.
He was big on yelling "censorship" in the 2016-2017 days. The r/bitcoin subreddit was where a lot of the discussions were happening, the admins of r/bitcoin didn't permit shitcoinery in their subreddit, and they considered implementations of bitcoin that weren't in consensus with the network to be shitcoins. Before there was bcash, there was bitcoin unlimited. Before BU, there was bitcoin classic. Ver promoted them all.
To say those in consensus (small blockers, if you like) censor big blockers (those that mine blocks greater than 1mb pre-segwit, 4m weight units now) is same as saying they're censoring txns that spend coins they don't have, sign for utxos they don't have the private keys for, or pay themselves 1000 btc in the coinbase txn. He's calling being out of consensus "censorship."
Bcashers spun up r/btc to have the discussions they wanted to have. Confusingly, the ticker for bitcoin is BTC, and bcash is BCH, or BCC on finex I think.
I was having a conversation with a precoiner this year who was on the cusp of becoming a newcoiner, and based on some of what he said, it was clear he's been misled by bcash rhetoric. Such a costly DDOS.

Thought regarding BTC price action...once people get off zero (taking one's assets from 0% BTC to some small amount), the daily/hourly price can be mesmerizing, but it can make people do dumb things, like buying high and selling low. Human psychology often makes us do stupid things when it comes to trading...some of the best performing accounts at traditional brokerages belong to clients who've been dead for years, because they're not moving things around in their portfolio, tripping themselves up.
We see the hourly and daily moves in the price...that's like waves at the beach. The trend, however, is like the tide. And the tide's coming in.

A thought about framing...$100,000 sounds expensive...2.4x median US income.
Another way to frame it is in the context of $900T of global assets. That number is ofc kind of augmented d/t all kinds of BS debt shenanigans, however it's a reference point.
Current BTC market cap...$2T
Current global assets...$900T
BTC currently makes up 0.22% of global assets. Gold is about 9x that (~2%). Is it reasonable for BTC value to reach that of gold, 2% of global assets? 5%? 10%?

To me it's succeeding now as well, even though probably >99% of people have never sent or received actual sats, lightning or on-chain
