BTW check out this from Lily Serna on why you don't need 183 at a party in order to have a 50% chance of having the same birthday as someone else there - in fact you only need 23 people. Not 183, 23. "A dice is one in six " - that's right, but exact same principles apply. You can get 2 heads in a row, you can roll two 6's in a row, you can get the same shuffle twice in a row, it just gets proportionally less likely.
"you can believe or not believe what you want" - knowing how probability works has got nothing to do with beliefs.
"we would still only manage 4.7e28 shuffles" - some of which would be identical 🙄

"truly random shuffles only" - yep, on truly random die rolls, you can still get the same number twice in a row. BTW there was a story not long ago about someone found a way to hack the Vegas shuffling machines and was thus able to predict exactly which card was coming out next

I'm telling you not to believe it, for the reasons I said. It sounds like a claim made by someone who doesn't understand how probability works. It's akin to saying "if my first coin toss is heads, the next one must be tails", or "6 die rolls will get every number", which is obviously fallacious, now multiply by 52 cards. I just saw the other day someone say "if there's a 50% chance of rain the next 2 days, then there's a 100% chance it will rain by the end of tomorrow", not kidding. 🙄

I find that highly unlikely, given what we know about normal distributions. Yes there's 8 followed by 67 zeroes possible combinations, but in 8 followed by 67 zeroes shuffles, you're not going to get every combination once. Some might never come up, whilst others come up multiple times. It's even theoretically possible (but unlikely) to get the exact same shuffle twice in a row! Plus consider how many shuffles happen in one day in Las Vegas!

I think this video suffers from taking it out of context. Derivatives are taught in high school, hence in a Calculus book this should just be revision of what the student has already learnt, so the page it appears on is irrelevant. In high school algebra the order roughly goes Pronumerals, Expanding brackets, The Distributive Law, Differentiation from 1st principles, Differentiation. I've seen this same channel get other things wrong due to forgetting what's taught in high school 🙄

I've often had people get butt-hurt when I lane filter past them on my motorbike, so it's not just bicycles drawing ire. Some people even deliberately try to stop me getting past. Dude, if you're so annoyed that I was able to get past you whilst you're stuck in traffic then just, you know, get a bike. 🙄 Sometimes they even toot me when I'm using the bus lane, which I'm ALSO legally allowed to do.

I once ordered something in black, because that was the ONLY colour available - there was literally no other choice - and when it didn't show up and I contacted them to find out why, they said "we e-mailed you (I never got it) because Black is NO LONGER AVAILABLE, so we need you to choose another colour, and when we didn't hear from you we cancelled your order". FWIW I rarely hear anything through the walls (unless they're drilling). Most stuff I hear comes through the door, which lets sound through more readily than the walls do. The biggest issue was when the unit above me changed to having wooden floors, and they had young kids (though my agent said they've possibly violated strata laws), but they seem to have since switched back to carpet

Doesn't have to be in a high-rise. Maybe a townhouse would be more to your liking? Or even a small block. I'm in a 10-unit complex (each 2 beds, 1 bath, 1 garage), and we do have some grounds, but also one of the residents likes gardening and wants to do it, and we're happy to let him do it cos that's saving us on our strata levies by not having to pay a gardener 🙂

I'm talking about I've seen first-hand more crime here - people breaking into garages, etc. A number of us have security bolts on our garage doors now, rather than relying on the weak locks they come with (easily broken into with a screwdriver). The Police chopper is also hanging around a lot more often lately

I think the world is definitely less safe than when we were young. I've seen decline first-hand where I live. When I moved here, it was low density - all houses bar 2 blocks of units in the street - and now it's high density - almost all houses gone, replaced by units and townhouses - and there's been a noticeable decline in the neighbourhood - more break-ins, more rubbish left lying around, etc.

I can't agree with that summary at all. Just look at Punk in the 70's, where neither of those things were necessary - in fact was very much about anybody at all can make music - and several U.K. acts were big worldwide. Agree that vinyl sounds better in general, but some digitally-remastered recordings sound better than the original. And as much as I prefer to listen to vinyl, the convenience of digital usually wins out. e.g. if I'm at the computer then I'm more likely to just play the MP3 rather than go out to the other room and put the vinyl on.

I just recently went to a gig for the first time since the pandemic started, and one thing that made me feel more comfortable about it (as well as wearing a mask obvs) is that I got a seat in the back row at the end of the row, so I only had 1 person next to me and no-one behind me, then just rocked up not long before the main act was scheduled to start

Have some sympathy for them though. I've been chairman of mine for a long time, but there's always been at least 2 other people on the committee. For years now I kept getting outvoted on setting the fees according to what the strata agent had budgeted. I kept saying we can't do that, we'll get behind. Still got outvoted. Now one of the balconies needs structural repairs. It could be $100,000. We only have $10,000 in the sinking fund. Guess what is going to happen to our fees now! 😡

Temperature is officially measured 6 feet (I think?) off the ground and in the shade, but when I was a kid and we were having a heat wave the teacher said we could go home if it got to 40 degrees, so we got the thermometer and put it on the asphalt in the middle of the playground - didn't get there but (or I think maybe the teacher knew what we did) 😂
