2025 was an incredibly rewarding year, full of unexpected gifts and meaningful opportunities. With Open Dialogue Foundation, we continued supporting people where it mattered most.
We assisted in delivering hundreds of bionic hands to veterans in Ukraine, exposed in the U.S. Congress and European Parliament the weaponisation of behavioural data, Silver and Purple Notice of #INTERPOL and shed light on transnational financial repression by authoritarian regimes like #Kazakhstan, #Kyrgyzstan, and Russia reaching EU and U.S. citizens and entities.
We contributed proudly to stopping Chat Control regulation again and shared personal stories reminding why we should be especially active in protecting the privacy of payments, communications, and their developers in the digital era.
Encryption of communication and #Bitcoin are the two tools serving as fundamental guarantees for human rights in the digital era.
On a personal note, after years of separation and health challenges, long-pending divorce papers were finally granted this year, and I fully regained my health.
I'm deeply grateful for the people, lessons, and moments that shaped this year. Looking ahead to another wonderful one.

Btw, you are writing on this platform because you enjoy free speech that someone defended for you in Western countries, because it was developed by brilliant minds who grew up in the West thanks to freedoms defended by others, and because this and many other freedom tools were funded by donors coming from free societies.

US CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS ON TRANSNATIONAL FINANCIAL REPRESSION
On June 24, 2025, the US House of Representatives held hearings on transnational repression. I had the honor of presenting to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission one of the most sophisticated methods of persecution—the abuse by undemocratic regimes of financial and cybersecurity regulations, as well as mutual legal assistance agreements, targeting not only government critics but also #American philanthropists, non-governmental organizations, and investors.
My testimony and recommendations addressed two key aspects:
(1) explaining how transnational financial repression is carried out and its impact on the United States, and
(2) how these mechanisms are used to obstruct financial support for pro-democratic movements and humanitarian activities.
Regimes, particularly #Kazakhstan and #Russia, along with their proxies such as Kyrgyzstan's #Bakai Bank, have learned to exploit trust-based mechanisms of international cooperation. This enables dictators to arbitrarily freeze or confiscate assets in the #UnitedStates, deny Americans access to financial services, misuse financial intelligence and personal data, and spread targeted disinformation to undermine organizations' economic reputations and circumvent international sanctions.
By abusing these international agreements, dictators and their proxies can also initiate Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP suits), depleting their critics residing in Western countries both legally and financially.
One example is the case of American investor and philanthropist Barlyk Mendygaziyev, his family members, and political hostage Bekizhan Mendygaziyev.

I survived and Im fighting against debanking as a weapon against critical voices used in western countries.
My family, my Open Dialogue Foundation and business company experienced and are overcoming the fact that our financial data was weaponized to destroy reputation, our families, businesses, to isolate us as critics. Same happened with many still silent tech and #bitcoin businesses in the western world to destroy their competitive proposals.

Being critical, competitive and effective against governments abusing power should never be claimed as “high risk”.

URGENT: PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY COMMUNICATION RIGHT NOW!
on 4th Sept 2024 #ChatControl regulation representatives of EU goverments will resume work based on a secret document according to Patrick #Breyer, former Member of the European Parliament.
Help to mobilize everybody to defend our #privacy of communication and its developers, investors!
If no preventive actions from your side now, this regulation will be endorsed on 12/13 December 2024.
According to the draft regulation dated 28 May (Council document 9093/24), ChatControl deploys to do, for instance:
🔻 “upload moderation”, users of apps and services with chat functions are to be asked whether they accept the indiscriminate and error-prone scanning and possibly reporting of their privately shared images, photos and videos.
🔻Scan by “artificial intelligence” technology previously unknown images and videos;
🔻If a user refuses the scanning, they would be blocked from sending or receiving images, photos, videos and links (Article 10).
🔻End-to-end encrypted services such as Whatsapp or Signal would have to implement the automated searches “prior to transmission” of a message (so-called client-side scanning, Article 10a).
During the last discussion on 24 May, the Council Legal Service made it clear that indiscriminate chat control scanning of non-suspects is still envisioned and remains a violation of fundamental rights.

→ Ask for an explanation and for your government to revert its course.

→ Ask why and demand that they take a strong stance against chat control.

→ Great, but take a closer look at the reasoning: Some governments like #Germany e.g. only object to the scanning of encrypted communications, but are fine with the indiscriminate scanning of other private and public communication, with the end of anonymous communication by requiring age verification, or with introducing a minimum age for “risky” communication apps. Also critical governments need to do more, exert their influence in the Council of the EU and agree on a joint list of necessary fundamental changes to the proposal. Absent such revision they should ask the European Commission to withdraw the chat control proposal as it stands.

I had the honour of sharing my personal experience with Melanion Capital & Jad #Comair on their podcast about how easy it is to weaponise the financial data of every resident and citizen of Western countries.
The refusal to protect banking secrecy has led to a massive failure in the protection of human rights. #Bitcoin p2p transactions have become the only available tool for the financially repressed and excluded as a consequence of the abuse of AML/CFT laws.
We live in a time when financial institutions have been given the right to police activities of citizens. If your rights are violated by the police, you have the possibility of defence/remedies. However, with financial institutions, there are no such mechanisms due to Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations.
I experienced this first hand when three authoritarian regimes abused my and Open Dialogue Foundation banking data getting it from #Belgium and #Poland.
Banking records obtained by three regimes became a weapon against me and anyone who worked, received our support in different countries or championed our human rights work at the time. I able to continue my human rights work and hold accountable perpetrators of violations of my rights thanks to #freedomtech Bitcoin.
Ironically, AML/CFT laws were created to fight criminals, oligarchs, dictators corrupting western countries. In reality - AML/CFT laws have become the most effective tool for #TransnationalRepression, breaking down all barriers to protect the right to #privacy of #correspondence, #transactions, #movements. If you think that this only applies to dictatorial or authoritarian countries, you are sorely mistaken.

You have a right to wait until it is banned and then what? Complain? Move to other jurisdictions? Or you think that with all negative publicity and just few voices in defense negative government report will transform suddenly into a positive law?
In a free society you have privileges to correct wrong regulatory opinions. You can defend your industry, or just wait to see if really someone attempts to limit it. It is your privilege.
I don’t have such privileges and have the only financial tool to lose/be negatively labeled and affect lives of many people I defend from financial exclusion/repression.
And all of that just because there is almost no will from Norwegian bitcoiners to defend themselves.

NORWAY IS GOING TO BAN BITCOIN MINING WITHOUT PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS -

Norway's Ministry of Digitalisation and Public Administration responded to @ODFoundation that it "has no plans to conduct a public consultation" on a ban on cryptocurrency mining.
There is no doubt that the ban designed to target #Bitcoin mining. Unfortunately, that's a stance of the @Stortinget and the Norwegian government.

🔴 Why we should protect our #freedomtech Bitcoin in #Norway NOW:
(1) Norway is fully integrated in the European Single Market throught the European Economic Area (EEA) and Schengen Agreement. It means Norway can provide its legilsative approach as an input for new legislation for the EU/EEA both:
- during the preparatory phase, when the @EU_Commission is developing proposals;
- during work of expert groups and committees of the European Commission;
- submitting proposals and comments to European Free Trade Association on upcoming legislation.
(2) As a co-founder of the @OECD , Norway sets an example of regulation worldwide and provides its legislative recommedations for global standards.
(3) Norway has historically been a place to meet, share experiences and educate human rights defenders and bitcoiners from around the world.
Norwegian goverment will present its investigation a ban on cryptocurrency mining by the end of 2024.
🔴 What we should do together to prevent Bitcoin mining ban:
(1) Repost this post and join our #BTC Coalition to educate local communities and media about social benefits of Bitcoin mining in Norway and worldwide;
(2) Help us pool resources and best practices to convince Norwegian politicians and media to explore the social benefits of Bitcoin to prevent this repressive regulation;

3/4 Most MPs support this position and refuse to meet to discuss the issue, not only because of the misunderstanding of Bitcoin, but also because of the lack of public data, submitted to the parliament and government on why #Bitcoin mining is beneficial to #Norway.

We Have to Defend Bitcoin Mining in Norway. Here is why:
1/4 In April 2024, the Norwegian government introduced a legislation to regulate data centers in a way that effectively bans #Bitcoin mining in the country.
This is setting a huge precedent. So far, all attempts to ban bitcoin mining have been referred to the practices of authoritarian/dictatorial countries such as #China. But in the case of #Norway, this country is considered one were bitcoiners teach human rights defenders about freedom technology routinely.

OVERCOME DISTRUST WITH BITCOIN
Last week I had the opportunity to share my experience at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit about using #Bitcoin to address #AI fraud in the case of financial exclusion/transnational repression and attempted election fraud.
The main question of the Summit was how to overcome distrust, especially when new technologies in combination with AI that can both enhance and undermine it. Alliance of Democracies Foundation, brought amazing experts, including Peter Erben from The International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Annette Kroeber-Riel, Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy at #Google in Europe, and Nanna-Louise Linde, Vice President of European Government Affairs, #Microsoft.
My role was to present my experience and examples of the Bitcoin blockchain technology that civil society is using right now to protect electoral integrity, rule of law and human rights around the world from artificial intelligence fraud.
After all, it is not only smear campaigns or AI fraud that undermine the integrity of elections, but also by cutting off the financial resources needed for independent candidates to run. So Bitcoin technology helps to restore the trust and civil rights, for example:
🧡 protection against massive smear campaigns with AI abuses that lead to the financial exclusion and discrimination of the candidates running for elections, activists, and independent media inside authoritarian countries like Kazakhstan, Belarus, Turkey or lately, even in India.
🧡 provides tools against transnational persecution of critics of authoritarian regimes living abroad.
Transactions via bitcoin's p2p wallet are the only tool to protect such groups in non-democratic states.

Show me one thing where power was given, but not taken. Not everyone pretends. Last year European Parliament voted in defense of self-hosted wallets, recognizing crypto assets as a payment and crowdfunding instruments. This year trilogue procedure with involvement of the EU Commission and EU Council ➕ silence of the EU citizens in defense of privacy instruments made EP’s position weak. So we have this very dangerous proposal of AML regulation.
If you don’t defend your rights, if you are tired to defend your rights, you will lose them. Satoshi #Nakomoto understood very well: his freedom tool is about defending rights, defending decentralized power. On behalf of the BTC Coalition, we are recommending MEPs to vote AGAINST the #EU #AMLR proposal and urge you to join our call for three main reasons:
1. EU WILL DEVASTATE CROWDFUNDING FOR ACTIVISTS AND HUMANITARIAN NGOs
NGOs barely receive funds to support human rights or humanitarian aid.
#Crowdfunding, including the use of #Bitcoin in self-hosted wallets, is the last resort.
What is the EU doing?
In the post-Trilogue AMLR draft, all possible crowdfunding platforms, including based on crypto-assets and serving humanitarian purposes, designated as intermediaries, are considered as high-risk ever-evolving Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (ML/TF) channel.
In practice this means fewer and fewer donations, because of:
🔻increased administrative & operational costs,
🔻reduction of the donor base due to invasive due diligence processes,
🔻reduced financial inclusion of smaller entities and projects that traditionally rely on crowdfunding.

Since you write me in English, you probably had a chance to get educated without much effort contrary to the situation we have in many authoritarian states.
Covid restrictions were possible because just a few opposed. But those who opposed actually did changes that we right now don’t experience restrictions. If you fight back you get what you want. There is always a price for that, obviously.

So freedoms you enjoy right now were achieved because your grandparents or so fought for them. If you don’t defend them and give up, they will be undoubtedly taken by others.

There are many draconial provisions in the upcoming #EU #AML Regulation both for cash and to p2p #bitcoin transactions (self-hosted wallets and use of mixers).
Some examples:
(33b) The introduction of a Union-wide limit to large cash payment mitigates the risks associated with the use of large cash payments. However, obliged entities that carry out transactions in cash below this amount remain vulnerable to risks of money laundering and terrorist financing as they provide a point of entry into the Union’s financial system. Therefore, it is necessary to require the application of customer due diligence measures to mitigate the risks of misuse of cash. To ensure that the measures are proportionate with the risks posed by transactions of a value lower than EUR 10 000, such measures should be limited to the identification and verification of the customer and the beneficial owner when carrying out occasional transactions in cash of at least EUR 3 000. This provision does not relieve the obliged entity from conducting all customer due diligence measures whenever there is a suspicion of money laundering or terrorist financing, or from reporting suspicious transactions to the FIU.
(93) The anonymity of crypto-assets exposes them to risks of misuse for criminal purposes. Anonymous crypto-asset ▌accounts as well as other anonymising instruments, do not allow the traceability of crypto-asset transfers, whilst also making it difficult to identify linked transactions that may raise suspicion or to apply to adequate level of customer due diligence. In order to ensure effective application of AML/CFT requirements to crypto-assets, it is necessary to prohibit the provision and the custody of anonymous crypto-asset ▌accounts or accounts allowing for the anonymisation or the increased obfuscation of transactions by crypto-asset service providers, including through anonymity-enhancing coins. The prohibition does not apply to providers of hardware and software or providers of self-hosted wallets insofar as they do not possess access to or control over those crypto-assets wallets.
As we were said by the EU Commission, “the ban on crypto-asset payments not intermediated by a crypto-asset service provider has not been retained given the absence of technical means of enforcing such a requirement at present”. But that exactly shows the direction of the regulatory approach.
This is a huge deterioration of financial and privacy rights after EU Commission and Council put pressure on the EU Parliament and removed all provisions in favor for individual rights, privacy and financial inclusion.

REGIMES' WAR AGAINST P2P BITCOIN CASH EXCHANGES HAS BEGUN
Imagine you were born in one of the richest countries in the world, with an area as big as the entire territory of the European Union. All the wealth is in the hands of a narrow group of corrupt oligarchs, while the population of the country simply survives on food loans.
This is what #Kazakhstan looks like today, where the regime is kept in place only through brutal repression and Putin's army, ready to crush peaceful protests at the first call of the Kazakh president.
As soon as you dare to put a like under a post criticising the authorities or participate in a protest, you are declared an extremist, a terrorist, a threat to national security or a money launderer.
The police will not only torture you to death after your arrest, they always take hostages of those you care about most. Your son or daughter may be kidnapped and killed to "make you come to your senses".
Your only chance of escape is to get on EU or US politicians' political prisoner lists. Kazakhstan is very keen on international recognition, trade and these are the only leverages for the release of political prisoners.
But let's look at another situation. You are not an activist. You're just a sympathiser and you've decided to donate to support the politically persecuted or support an opposition movement.
🔻What then? You'll be charged with „funding extremism” or „laundering money” in a secret court. You, your family members will all be financially excluded immediately. You can work informally for cash, but it is becoming increasingly difficult.
In such situations as described above, p2p exchange of cash for #bitcoin becomes the only salvation for you, how to protect your resources from illegal searches by secret police, banal theft and in general safety, transfer of your value.
🔻But the party did not last long: Kazakhstan's regime decided to take the tool away from the financially excluded and criminalise p2p cash-to-cryptocurrency exchanges in line with FATF/G7 recommendations.
Protecting such people as politically repressed is almost impossible for human rights defenders with this approach. This is one of the main factors why negative language towards bitcoin/p2p exchanges should not be allowed in the regulation of democracies.
🔻Kazakhstan primarily targeting those who use p2p transactions, mostly with cash for bitcoin and #USDT. On 12 March 2024, Kazakhstani media reported that a resident of Astana was imprisoned for 2 years and 6 months with confiscation of property for "illegal p2p-exchange of cash for cryptocurrency".
🔻Follow how fast was reaction of regime: on 4 March 2024, the Financial Monitoring Agency of Kazakhstan announced that it "observes the presence of illegal transactions of individuals with cryptocurrency (purchase, sale, payments for goods, works, services, transactions via P2P)".
Already on 12 March, the first demonstrative "verdict" on conducting "illegal" p2p exchanges of cash for cryptocurrency was announced.
🔥Question to #Nostr: What solutions do you have to protect individuals doing #cash to bitcoin p2p exchanges in such countries?

We need to educate policy makers in democracies to use neutral language in legislation towards to #bitcoin #freedomtech instruments. We also need to educate judges.
If we don’t do this, the first who are going to suffer are bitcoin developers, miners and end-users.

If you want to feel financial exclusion as result of over-regulation implemented AML/CFT rules, then you go there. But definitely not to fundraise.
One of the reasons why we teach other activists to fundraise with #bitcoin because they were financially excluded from this and other platforms.
