It was always meant to enshitify just because it's open source, that alone doesn't make it immune
The GNU/Linux ecosystem is pretty much centralized with 90 to 95% of distros using systemd, and recently Flathub (which is also bending the knee)
people used to say corporate backed projects are good because they have a way to sustain themselves, but we're seeing now that corporations care more about being compliant and less about what makes Free software a threat: It's principles.
Decentralization is now called fragmentation, and "can we just agree on one solid standard?" I bet you heard this before..

I tried #vendefoulwolf #budgie edition live mode to test it out, it's what you would expect from a Devuan based distros: No WiFi ooftb xD, also it's been a while since I tried budgie, it had like many redundant software, two settings apps, two or maybe 3 file managers.. I was so lost.. no welcome screen! (I'm I not welcomed?) It needs a lot of work, can't say I'll recommend to a beginner but.. I'll install it for them
It's main selling point to me is that it doesn't use the cursed (happy to comply) Systemd

yes, they don't understand how FOSS works, but they don't care.. "saving the children" is BS excuse to restrict information, once it's enforced on the OS level, next will be the browser level, then the app level, then your favorite app store level, then suddenly all websites and services will query that information from your browser, OS,, whatever.. and if it doesn't provide that information... well sorry we can't verify your age so you can't enter (and you're an adult!!)
so it's pointless to go about it with this approach, "if only we can make them understand, then they'll spare us FOSS users!"

first question is for you: why are you already considering your options like the gods have spoken and we have to comply with something that goes against one of our core values in the FOSS world: privacy?
second question is for all the foss projects who i feel should grow a spine and not hide behind blog and social media posts.. why are you in such a hurry to comply? deadline is in Jan 1st 2027! and projects are already considering how to implement what should be considered: spyware!

just for clarification, it seems that the new policy took effect this past August (2 months ago), I'm I correct?
Also, it seems they're using Cloudflare to scan unencrypted rooms? but to me that doesn't really matter much..what matters is the fact that they recognize it's an authoritarian law, and still leveraged an existing technology (offered by a company that no dev should trust or use) to overcome this hurdle.. It makes me question their commitment to privacy.. why? Because if you comply with a bad law, it signals to the government that you're able and willing to comply with future bad laws.. they will give you just that.

If you're really serious about making a difference, you should start considering leaving YouTube, It's not enough to say this platform is trash to your viewers, most of them feel the trashy nature of it already (phone number requirement, centralized source of Information, ridiculous "community guidelines" and terms, #censorship, algorithms, advertisements.. and now Age verification by a Government ID and/or Face scan)
This doesn't mean ruining your content creator career in the process, if you're uploading to a different platform, chances are you already know the problem with YouTube, but just know that uploading to a different platform isn't the solution on it's own, just like using private front-ends isn't the ultimate solution, it's just a temporary fix.
while uploading to a second platform is great and it's much appreciated but unfortunately that alone doesn't incentivize (motivate) your followers to make the switch, you should take it a step further.
as long as you're treating the alternative as a backup solution instead of it being your future home, where your content and your community will live, then we don't have a chance against this tech giant, make the switch inside your mind first before asking your community to make it.
You work so hard to make that video, to the point where you'll start calling it a 'video project', and I agree.. it is a **project**.. it's a lot of work..
It's understandable why YouTube is the first platform you upload to, because you want people to see your work, what's the point of uploading that video (that you worked so hard to make) to an empty platform, a ghost city.. where no one will see it.. You go to YouTube for exposure, so use it for that.. just that.
**you don't have to upload everything to YouTube**, you're not there for engagement, you're there for people to see that you exist, if they want to see more of you, they should come to your primary platform, what you consider your future home to be, that home should be of course everything that YouTube isn't (No #Ads, No #tracking, No #ageverification , No #kyc, No #Ai, No #shadowbannig, No #algorithms, No vague rules and legalese), use #YouTube for exposure and your main platform for the content, a platform where you're not competing against ads that try to take your viewers attention.
Do you want to take it a step further?
Upload short clips, teasers (shall we say) to YouTube, make a call to action in the end, "If you want to see the full version, the link is in the description"
YouTube has reached it's final stage, It can no longer offer anything useful to #humanity , now it's sole purpose is to be used as bridge for the next generation of video hosting platforms, ones that offer innovative ways to share and preserve humanity's knowledge, it's a huge gamble to trust a #monopoly with that knowledge, they can restrict access to it, they can erase it, they can use it (and not in a good way e.g. training Ai), the moment you hit upload, It's not your content anymore, it's not your 'video project' anymore, it's a YouTube video.
I have seen content creators (who should know better) fall for the trap of convenience that YouTube set up for them, either by embracing the "pay or okey" model just so they don't see ads, and others going full normie and enabling memberships, leading their followers further into the surveillance ad machine, you should lead by example, content creators don't follow the crowds, the crowds follow content creators and leaving a platform is the most effective way to destroy it, you don't fight the system by staying in the system.

Nice video, short and straight to the point.. Subscribed.
I have different perspective though.. You say it's because of legalese and nothing has changed in the real world (in terms of what's happening with your data), but that's not entirely true, we all know that Mozilla focus has shifted in the last few years, and they basically went from "fighting for the open web", to the "Privacy preserving ad company", and let's not get to their Ai focus and their involvement in politics, which depending on where you sit on the political spectrum, you might find that problematic.. on and on..
The new management doesn't seem to understand the user base, they don't seem to know how to talk to us, and here's my question: if legalese is basically double speak to protect the company, why don't they keep that in the "terms of service" and address the new terms in basic english in a blog post.. Oh.. they did.. and they said we were "confused".. that's Kinda insulting when you're the one double speaking Mozilla
But I totally agree, with the Google independence argument, that's why I'll stick to a fork.. It's funny how I used FF out of principle, but now I'll not use it for basically the same reason, principle.. at the end of the day, as an advanced user.. I can always tweak a user.JS script and make FF more private.. because out of the box.. FF is the opposite of private..
