I’m curious why he’s in a regular shirt and not a hospital gown, I’m curious why it took so long to post, and I really wish it was a video and he was talking and turned his head to both sides while talking which is still beyond the current AI models to reproduce.
Legal question though, if he continues to recuperate and then on Aug 4th “takes a bad turn and dies” what then? Do we investigate to see if there was fraud? Not even sure how to prosecute that. 1/2

LOL. Yeah, but I would bet you a donut that in the initial commit of the code all it did was demodulate WBFM and then someone said, "Well it could also do ..." and that got added on. You could hack it to also demodulate SSTV and add a switch to tell it to produce .png files or something and the cycle would continue. 😆

Ah got it. I went back and read your 'hacking sstv' web page. One answer is to just write a program that tunes your SDR to the band where the SSTV images are being transmitted, capture the transmission and decode them and then post them to the Fediverse. That all works fine on a headless RasPi with an SDR dongle and an internet connection.
It's interesting that few do it this way.

When I re-read your question I realized that you were saying you wanted to use the headless RasPI SSTV box. But no remote GUI protocol. Perhaps just run a TCP-IQ server on the RasPi? Send the IQ data to an app on your laptop/desktop? Something like Spyserver? That would avoid the remote gui protocol and its an off the shelf solution. 2/2

For me, the more interesting question is "Was it worth it?" What I mean by that, is if you told me "This will set you on the path to discovering some amazing thing about the universe, but as a result you will die early and possibly in a much more painful way than if you hadn't been given this opportunity." Do you say yes? Do you say no thanks? I suspect even if I knew it would kill me, my desire to know a new thing would compel me.

This is pretty freakin cool of them. I wonder if they could turn a half a million acres of Oklahoma into a solar farm and grid scale batteries, it could generate 250 GWhrs of clean energy every day. With the battery installations built under the panels (uses the same space), that could generate 10GW of baseline power continuously over 24hrs of every single day. I think TED or SXSW as "shows" whereas Usenix was a "conference." Things like DesignCon are really professional commercials. I know a couple of conferences that are off the record that would love to hear you speak, but not much 'fame' to be had there if that is what you seek.

I'm a bit surprised you would use anything other than sine waves as the harmonics in non-sinusoidal signals just add other mixes. For example, square waves + pythogorean has 256+384+768+1152+1280+1920+1792+2688+... Hz. (all the odd harmonics). Sawtooth is worse with *all* the harmonics. Sound in air is worse still since air mixes so you get the sums and differences of those as well.

That the air holds more moisture as it gets warmer is only news to people who have been paying attention 🙂, but its also the basis for one potential outcome which is glaciation. Basically jet stream stops, moisture precipitates out as snow, albedo goes through the roof, creating a positive feedback loop and you get 10,000 years of ice age.

Oh I missed that bit. There was a co-worker at NetApp that I knew who built his own plane and used to tell stories of how cavalier some of the other kit builders were. He said after that experience if he were to buy a plane that someone else had built he would completely disassemble it and reassemble it to verify it was done correctly. Seems challenging in that many steps are pretty much one way.

There is a certain level of craziness you need to install parts bought at a swap meet that will, if they fail, possibly kill you. My dad was familiar with people who would sell 3D printed gun parts at gun shows that he knew would fail if they got hot. I wonder what sort of liability the swap meet has for that sort of thing?

There is an effort to get TENEX out into the wild. As you know TENEX was the PDP-10 OS that BBN wrote that we ran at USC-ECL on our “ARPA Net” host (ECL-C) and at USC-ISI. Currently owned by Raytheon (who bought BBN). The pager is different which makes emulating it tough without source code.

I appreciate your sentiment of a strong Ukraine. Maintaining nuclear weapons was outside of Ukraine’s control then as it is now. And this particular point of view excuses the fact that the US was TREATY BOUND to protect Ukraine and it did not.
That the US didn’t rally the UN and Europe and send in troops in 2014 to repel the “green men” was the real crime. As a result I cannot help but see this sentiment as victim blaming rather than support. FWIW.

Hence my idea for the League of Extraordinary Engineers. Which is basically a member-benefit organization which provides a space for engineers to do basic research, train upcoming talent, socialize, and work on hard problems. The scheme is simpler than that, go to goodwill, buy a dozen VHS tapes, put them on craigslist for $3000 each, "buyers" come by and buy them. Deposit the money in your bank that you got from your "collectible" VHS tapes. Your buyers stop by goodwill and donate VHS tapes. Generally people with the title "Systems Engineer." It's a common role in defense industries, less so in civilian focused tech. Typically they are expected to evaluate and optimize a collection of components into a coherent system. So in a military context the detection component, the evaluation component, the response component plus the people who are in that loop and the interfaces between those components. Also surety systems.

Okay then, I'm curious how system dynamics and systems analysis are related (if at all). I got to play with some tools that tried to formalize systems architecture so that you can reason about them and that was under the umbrella of 'analysis' as opposed to 'dynamics'.
I've joined the society but I don't think I'll make the conference in Boston. That should let me access the background materials though that the society provides.

I was going to pop in here and say "But this is just System's Analysis." Interesting to contextualize it as a directed graph and labeling the edges with the first derivative of the distance from the solution.I wonder if you could use the gradient to plot a path to localized nodes that are arbitrarily close to the solution. Like current LLMs it wouldn't necessarily land on the optimal path, but a workable one.

Time to dust off my urban datacenter design and start shopping it around. Back around 2012 I worked with Bloom Energy to design a "small" 10MW urban data center that only used fuel cells for power, it was both quiet and didn't need diesel for backup power (there was an on-site CNG tank that was used if gas supplies were interrupted.) It had an "indoor/outdoor" floor plan and a solar panel roof.
