Webtorrent works differently that Bittorrent. Distribution is downloading in this case but it's not persistent like a traditional torrent file. While the video is being played it is distributed to others in a peer swarm. The CDN hosted file is used as an initial boot strap sed called the "webseed" and the peer network spreads it from there. 👍

BitVid is a creator-controlled video platform that uses Nostr for identity and publishing, S3-compatible storage for the actual video files, and WebTorrent to help distribute them. Instead of uploading everything to a company-owned platform like YouTube, creators can keep their videos in their own storage bucket while publishing them through their Nostr identity.
The S3 bucket acts as the reliable home for each video. It makes sure the file remains available even when nobody else is watching or sharing it. Creators can use services such as Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, or another compatible provider, giving them more control over where their content is stored.
WebTorrent helps reduce bandwidth usage by allowing viewers to share pieces of the video with one another while they watch. When peers are available, some of the video can come from them; when they are not, the S3 bucket fills in the missing pieces. In simple terms, S3 keeps the video reliably online, while WebTorrent lets the audience help distribute it.
Nostr ties everything together by handling the creator’s identity, video metadata, comments, reactions, and publishing. This makes the videos more portable because the creator’s identity and posts are not locked inside BitVid itself. 🤙

Bitvid has Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2 and Generic S3 bucket support. I'm also testing support for MinOS for self-hosted NAS storage. Our integration with Webtorrent should help distributeing content to many viewers by distributing the load to the client viewers themselves.

Discover More Content
We've completely revamped content discovery with three distinct feeds:
• For You – prioritizes creators and content from your social graph while intelligently recommending new videos.
• Explore – surfaces videos you likely haven't seen instead of simply showing the newest uploads.
• Trending – highlights the most popular recent videos based on real engagement.
Together, these changes make it much easier to find great content beyond your subscriptions.
More Accurate View Counts
We've overhauled how views are counted across the network.
View events are now deterministically deduplicated using Nostr d-tags and combined across multiple relays, resulting in more accurate and trustworthy view counts. Refreshing a page or seeing duplicate events from different relays no longer inflates statistics.
Popularity Analytics
You can now view a video's popularity over time directly from the More (...) menu. Instead of only seeing a total view count, you can watch how a video's audience has grown over time.
More Reliable Playback
Playback is now significantly more resilient.
@bitvid will intelligently try multiple hosted sources before falling back to WebTorrent, leading to faster startup times, fewer playback failures, and a smoother viewing experience.
Smarter Content Availability
We've made major improvements to how videos appear throughout the network.
New configurable visibility policies, eager content probing, and smarter verification dramatically reduce disappearing video cards while still ensuring content is actually available. WebTorrent-only videos are now handled much more gracefully as well.
Improved Direct Messages
Messaging has received several quality-of-life improvements:
• Better compatibility with older Nostr clients through legacy NIP-04 support.
• Automatic login prompts when attempting to send messages while signed out.
• Conversations now automatically open when selecting a recipient.
Lightning Improvements
We've fixed several issues with Lightning zaps, including creator split calculations, platform split handling, and improved error handling for LNURL and CORS-related edge cases.
Better Channel Syncing
Channel pages are now much more stable by intelligently merging newly discovered events with existing content instead of replacing them. This prevents videos from disappearing while synchronization is happening.
Performance Improvements
We've reduced unnecessary relay subscriptions during login, improved synchronization behavior, expanded storage compatibility, fixed several UI edge cases, and eliminated a number of bugs throughout the application—including a long-standing processing spinner that could occasionally get stuck.
Spam & Access Improvements
We've also strengthened validation and access controls by improving npub verification, tightening whitelist handling, and making permission checks more reliable regardless of whether a public key is represented in hex or npub format.
Behind the Scenes
Alongside these user-facing features, we've continued improving @bitvid's architecture with expanded testing, better storage compatibility, cleaner release workflows, and a more robust foundation for future features.

I have a basic node js #WebTorrent seed server with #nostr login working reliably. 👍
I can run headless and access from the browser.
I can add videos from magnet links or from file.
Server runs in background.
Saves added torrents to DB.
Only displays data when logged into a nostr account.
Can seed video, download stored files from browser, copy magnet, pause seeding and remove/delete torrent (and file).
Has paginated list.
And UI storage location selector.
Next I need to add a special "seed video" button to videos on bitvid client and the option to auto seed videos found on your seed list as well as blanket seed settings like:
- automatically seed any video I publish
- automatically seed any videos npubs from this list publish
- seed with time limits (seed this video for 1 day, week, month etc.)
And many more ideas.

I considered it but it didn't support the fields I needed like magnet links, and eventually audio and podcast info like track number etc. So creating my own spec seemd like the best option. Plus I really wanted bitvid to only support magnet link and webtorrent webRTC media content.
There are and will be tons of nostr video clients that point to a http link somewhere and nip-71 is perfect for that purpose, but I felt like webRTC required a special place due to the necessity of seeding.
And the same applies to the torrent nip. I can remember the number. But it had similar issues just on the bittorrent side rather than Webtorrent, which is what I am using.

Im working on a decentralized, nostr based video platform. At the moment the videos must be hosted by a desktop app called "WebTorrent Desktop" then the magnet link can be posted to nostr along with a title, description and thumbnail image.
Its still in early development and missing many features.
But viewers and audiences can also help support the video hosting.

At the moment the WedTorrent Desktop app is the best option. I'll create a tutorial walking through the process soon.
I am working on a docker based alternative that can run on a Synology NAS or even a Raspberry Pi with a hard drive attached built with bitvid and nostr in mind. I dont know how long it will take to get that ready.
There are limitations with the number of videos that can be seeded from a single computer so I'm working on different ways to scale that up for the average user.

I will soon roll out the private channel subscriptions on beta.bitvid.network .
Now you can:
- View a channels profile page along with all the content they have posted.
- Subscribe to a channel directly from its profile page.
- Maintain a #private subscription list (kind=30002 event) that’s encrypted using NIP-04, so nobody but you knows which channels you follow.
- Catch up on the latest videos from your subscribed creators in the “Subscriptions” view, pulled from all the channels you’ve added.
Eventually I'll add a list of the channels you are subscribed to in the sidebar for easier navigation.
This subscription approach keeps your follow activity off any public follow lists. Only you have the key to decrypt your subscription data, so it stays hidden from prying eyes. If you’re already logged in, check out #view=subscriptions to see which channels you’re following or to discover more content once you’ve subscribed.
Will roll out to the beta domain first then if all goes well I'll push to main.
Right now it requires a #nip-07 extention. If you have any questions about setting it up or want to suggest improvements, just let me know.

In part yes. You can seed, on servers or desktop computers you control, any content posted to #bitvid. Simply open a video and copy the #magnet link. You can then paste this link right into #WebTorrent desktop app to support the distribution of that content.
I hope to enable seeding content by public key so you can support creators automatically by seeding anything they post.
At the moment, building a reliable and functional client is my first priority.

- fixed links that are to videos that have since been edited

Fixed a ton of things. Reworked a ton of things, but my favorite is now after editing a video, the new video URL and the old video URL will still work.
That was tricky to figure out since nostr is immutable, and I don't want new versions of the same videos showing up in the grid feed. Maybe it's not the correct way to do this, but I ended up using a Root ID.

This weekend I added a local browser based #WebTorrent client to help get content seeded out in a pinch from any computer.

Shout out to #βTorrent for the amazing work. The #bitvid βeacon client is based on a modified βTorrent client.
So, now using just bitvid you can seed a video file from any computer and have a verified URL where it can live online with public nostr post verification. And the community that values the content can support by seeding that video content as well. This ensures that content can continue to proliferate.
Its a full cycle system in a single tool now.
More features like channel profiles, subscriptions and better nostr relay and npub/note blocklist control are on the agenda for the next few weeks.

Working on adding a fallback thumbnail image in case the link in the nostr note doesn't load in any content. This is why some of the videos have no images.
Will also be adding a 16:9 Thumbnail crop/fill to the thumbnail display box.

The bitvid site is buggy at the moment but a simple refresh of the page will solve a lot of issues.
Currently the site works best on Chrome based browsers. 👍

Ok, thanks! At the moment I have in place a white list of npubs that can login. This is to prevent the posting of things like CP of adult content until I have a better way of allowing users to create block lists and content tags.
I was able to reproduce this bug using Firefox so I should be able to fix. 👍

Hmm, can you send me more details about your setup? I'll see if i there is something I can do.
The service worker needs root access to the site files that are cached on device. Some browsers like Tor block these actions so there's not much that can be done.

Its usually a privilege issue with the service worker. I had the same issue at first. But I seem to have it working reliably. It's also very important that the torrent is created by a Webtorrent WebRTC client. Regular Torrent files won't work.

Thanks! Still building out the app. My hope is that this app will be completely static and could run on your desktop or at any website. All uploaded content is streaming from other users and content creators computers directly rather than from centralized servers. This means that content can be sure to endure as long as a single person is seeing.

1. Fix bugs related to posting and editing videos. Partially related to adjusting the private status.
2. Add "Copy Magnet" button to each video so that anyone can seed the content.
3. Use the event ID to create a unique URL so anyone can share a link directly to a particular video.
4. Add a npub profile section to see all videos posted by a particular npub.
5. Add a subscription list note type function so you can subscribe to channels and restore your subscriptions from relays.
6. Add custom relay selector.
7. Add an import/export for blacklisting npubs.
8. Add zaps for videos and channels.
9. Add comments to video modal.
10. Update video spec to include categories and tags.
11. Add Customizable Home feeds.
