Well damn! Something has been nibbling on the vegetable plants at the #CommunityGarden. TBH, I think a deer figured out how to jump over the electric fence (though I did find the fence open a couple of times this month, so that could have just put out the "welcome mat"). I recall finding what looked like deer tracks near the pumpkin patch, where the green pumpkins on the outer edge all had huge chunks taken out of them.
In my plot, my mammoth sunflower was de-leaved pretty high up (deer), as well as some squash and bean plants. Luckily, they don't like my flowers, or the Nightshades, and seem to have left my plot neighbor's corn alone... For now...
I think we need a real fence around the garden. Sigh...

So, I would describe myself as having Aspergers and ADHD (but of course, nobody uses Aspergers anymore). I do think that there needs to be a way to better describe higher functioning folks and those who have more needs. Maybe go back to using "Aspies" to define ourselves and use "Autistic" to describe folks who need more support? Just putting that out there...

So, when getting my yearly physical a few weeks ago. I wore a mask, and everyone I encountered asked if I wanted them to mask up. Only one of them (the radiologist) had a mask on when I entered their area. You're absolutely right that it should be the norm, not a polite exception (in my case).

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration today proposed scrapping the country’s most significant tool for protecting national forests, a move that would open nearly 45 million acres of wild, unfragmented forest across 37 states to road construction, logging and other development.
“Trump is pushing for the largest evisceration of public lands protection in American history and against what Americans want,” said Randi Spivak, public lands policy director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “These are some of the last truly wild forests left in the country, places that shelter endangered wildlife and protect our drinking water. Once you start bulldozing roads for commercial logging and industrial development, there’s no getting them back. Americans love their public lands and want them protected. We’re going to fight like hell to safeguard these wild places for future generations.”
Today’s announcement from the U.S. Agriculture Department will be followed by Wednesday’s release of the draft environmental analysis, giving the public until Sept. 21 to comment on the proposed Roadless Rule recission.
Here are statements from the Center’s regional experts on risks to roadless forests and wildlife across the country:
Northern #Rockies
“Roadless forests are lifelines for grizzly bears and Canada lynx across the northern Rockies,” said Kristine Akland, Northern Rockies director. “Grizzlies need these areas to den and raise cubs and lynx populations are already declining as mature forest habitat disappears. Building roads and allowing logging in these wild areas would make an already difficult situation for these species even worse. People across the region know how vital these intact forests are for wildlife, clean water and recreation, and they overwhelmingly oppose dismantling the Roadless Rule.”
#Alaska
“We’ll fight Trump’s monstrous proposal to gut the Roadless Rule, which would be disastrous for the Tongass,” said Cooper Freeman, Alaska program director. “Punching roads through 9 million acres of intact temperate rainforest would destroy world-class salmon streams. It would open the door for corporations to clearcut irreplaceable, centuries-old Sitka spruce for export overseas. Alaska’s wild places deserve better.”
Southwest
“Roadless forests are where wildlife live,” said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest director. “They’re home to jaguars, Mexican spotted owls, and ocelots, some of the most iconic animals on the continent. Plowing roads into their habitat will bring human-caused wildfires and disturbances that they don’t need and can’t afford. We’ve fought for years to protect the forests and animals of the Southwest and there’s no way we’re giving up now.”

"Roadless areas protect the most beloved and endangered species in the Southeast,” said Will Harlan, Southeast program director. “The South Mills River harbors the country’s strongest hellbender population. Snowbird and Tusquitee Bald shelter endangered Carolina northern flying squirrels, gray bats and longsolid mussel. These forests sustain local economies, protect iconic recreation spots like the Appalachian Trail and safeguard drinking water for millions of people in Charlotte, Atlanta and beyond. Handing them over to loggers and construction crews isn’t sound policy, it’s a tragedy."
Why we need the Roadless Rule:
- Forests free of roads and logging provide crucial and connected habitat for animals and plants, protecting them from noise, pollution and other human-caused harms.
- The forests at risk — from Oregon to North Carolina — are home to scores of threatened and endangered species, including American wolverines, Canada lynx, grizzly bears and northern spotted owls. Rescinding the Roadless Rule would not only push these species closer to extinction but threaten countless others, including Alexander Archipelago wolves and Queen Charlotte goshawks.
- More than 370,000 miles of roads already fragment U.S. national forests, with a maintenance backlog in the billions of dollars. Most wildfires are human caused and occur near roads, with a decades-long, nationwide study finding human-caused wildfires are four times more likely in areas with roads than in roadless forests.
- National forests are the headwaters of many of the country’s major rivers and the largest source of municipal water supplies, serving more than 60 million people in 33 states. The Roadless Rule protects rivers and streams from roads, a major source of water pollution because of erosion and sediment.

This text and the language in the corresponding map was updated in consultation with a world gender expert in October, 2023.
"Throughout recorded history and since time immemorial, thriving cultures have recognized, revered, and integrated more than two genders. Terms such as #transgender, gay, or bisexual are Western constructs that often assume three things: that there are only two sexes (male/female), as many as three sexualities (gay/straight/bisexual), and only two #genders (man/woman).
"Even after the end of the modern era and as the #colonial period wanes, hundreds of distinct #Indigenous societies around the globe still retain their own long-established traditions for third, fourth, fifth, or more genders. The subject of #TwoSpirits, Fred Martinez, for example, was not a boy who wanted to be a girl, but both a boy and a girl — an identity his Navajo culture recognized and revered as #nádleehí. Meanwhile, Hina of Kumu Hina is part of a #NativeHawaiian culture that has traditionally revered and respected #mahu, those who embody both male and female spirit. It’s not uncommon for third gender people to perform critical spiritual and religious functions in their communities.
"Among many Indigenous societies, two prominent features often distinguish the lives and social roles of third gender persons from those of cisgender persons or contemporary transgender persons in non-Indigenous societies. The first is that many Indigenous terms for third gender people contain both the word for 'man' and 'woman' in their construction, and that #ThirdGender people are seen as embodying both of those genders in diverse ways. The second is that the history of many third genders is in the community role of religious specialists, which also takes diverse forms, depending on the beliefs of diverse cultures. While not all third gender persons are defined in these terms, across our species, this phenomenon of the third gender religious specialist, healer, or spiritual worker has been part of our #CollectiveIdentity and human experience since time immemorial.

Many Indigenous transgender people who also identify as third gender are familiar to large audiences via their participation in popular media or social media activism. Third gender people, like the Japanese-Samoan, #Faafafine artist Yuki Kihara, now participate in major global cultural events and function not just as representatives of their gender-based community, but of their nation. Kihara had both a solo exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and represented New Zealand at the 2021 Venice Biennale. Mini-patio is done! We're going to push the dirt slope back a bit (less of an angle) and then I'll be re-seeding the surrounding area with white clover. My lawn chair and table fit perfectly, as does the smoker/BBQ. Not sure when I'll dare to use the smoker... Maybe this winter? Things have been wicked dry, despite the occasional downpour.

Yes! And I've used store bought organic potatoes as the "seed potatoes". I keep them in paper bags until they start sprouting, then plant them in 4-gallon pots. The secret is not using a lot of soil when first planting them (maybe 1/3 full), and building up the soil as they grow. I usually plant 2-3 potatoes per pot (the same type in each pot). I posted something about growing them a while back. I can look for that, if you'd like.

A nice little potato harvest. I may get a second crop, depending on the weather... I may keep the second batch on the porch if the weather gets too cold. I didn't have any luck with the purple potatoes, though. I'll try those again next year.

"Facebook and Instagram owner #Meta admitted Wednesday that one of its AI models hacked another company during security testing after it was accidentally allowed access to the internet by independent testing company Irregular. This comes on the heels of similar admissions by rival companies #OpenAI and #Anthropic.
"#GeoffreyHinton, the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist known as the 'godfather of AI,' warned Wednesday at the #Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, quote, 'I don’t believe we’re going to be able to keep control of them in the simple way of just outthinking them so they can’t escape,' he said, and said he is 'very worried' we could lose control.

And #MedicalDebt is the consequence of choosing the "wrong" plan (because hey, who can predict the future). My late cousin's family lost their house (my grandparents' house, the house I grew up in) because of medical debt, then shifty refinancing, and then the mortgage was sold to a private equity firm, and her widower had no choice but to walk away. Some family members tried to buy the house back, but they were outbid by a house flipper, who completely gutted it. Now it sits, unoccupied, and is pretty much a tear-down. What a waste!

You know, as I get closer to "retirement age", I'm finding out how much the #CaptalistSystem really fails folks who are #Seniors and who aren't #Millionaires or #Billionaires -- forcing them to have to do a mind-boggling amount of research to figure out if a Medicaid program will cover certain costs or even if you are covered if you leave the state to visit someone. It's horrible! And imagine folks with #MemoryIssues having to sort through all this BS? It's quite cruel! One of my friends who is a veteran was asked what his retirement plan was. His reply was "Drop dead in my vending booth" (he vends to make ends meet). Yikes! That's no way to take care of people -- especially those who have served!

They were inefficient, generated excessive heat, and scattered light somewhat indiscriminately. But they tended to fail gracefully. To support that, manufacturers continuously increase forward illumination distance and beam intensity.
"Adaptive matrix headlights, which can selectively dim portions of the beam to avoid dazzling other drivers while maintaining maximum illumination elsewhere, are theoretically the technological solution to the problem. In practice, though, adoption remains inconsistent, regulations vary by country, and many vehicles still rely on brute-force brightness rather than precision. The result is that nighttime driving increasingly feels less like navigating through darkness and more like surviving a rolling photonics demonstration from the consumer electronics industry.
"According to 2019 to 2023 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data, 46,154 fatalities on US roads were due to crashes at night and in non-lit areas. 446 were due to glare impeding the driver’s vision."

EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws

After landing in the US, customs agents demanded access to his Pixel phone, which was running an alternative version of Android called #GrapheneOS. Rather than hand over his data, Tunick used a clever feature of the software to delete everything. Now, he’s facing federal charges.
"The first hearing in this case happened last week, according to The Guardian, during which government attorneys and agents claimed that Tunick was subjected to a standard secondary interrogation at an international airport. During that encounter, agents were 'looking for anything that’s prohibited.' However, Tunick’s legal team alleges he was targeted for his #activism.
"Tunick was involved with a group called #DefendTheAtlanta Forest, which opposed the construction of an enormous law enforcement training facility in the area often known as #CopCity. What Tunick didn’t know, according to his lawyers, was that he’d been placed on a watch list for his actions and that Customs and Border Protection had discussed over email plans to detain him upon his arrival back in the US for 'suspected terrorism activities.'

So, I ended up emptying both our rainbarrels during a dry spell (110 gallons of water), using the water for not only my home garden, but my community garden plot as well. After a heavy, but brief, rainstorm this week, both barrels are full again. #Rainbarrels help prevent water from overflowing storm drain systems and they provide water during droughts. Make sure you use a tight screen to keep mosquitoes out (I replaced the screens that came with my rainbarrels, and I don't even have to use Bt now).

"Shooting ranges and military training fields, including warfare-impacted areas, have been widely recognized as environmentally impacted zones by inorganic and organic #contamination, such as #HeavyMetals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or explosive-related compounds. However, the possible contamination by #plastics and #microplastics in soil has been widely overlooked despite potential plastic sources, such as #ShotgunCartridges, #PlasticWads or #landmines. Due to how these activities occur, plastics have remained in the field for decades or centuries, favoring their conversion from macro to microplastics, polluting the soil and water resources. Moreover, shooting and recreational activities such as #airsoft or #paintball practices could also be a substantial source of plastics to ecosystems; once shot, pellets can have conventional or biodegradable plastics in their composition, and there left in the environment, favouring impacts on soil properties.
