🚂🚴 The Impossible Minute: How Charles Murphy Outran a Train and Changed Human Speed Forever
In 1899, the world was in the middle of a bicycle revolution. Bikes were giving ordinary people a new kind of freedom—but one question fascinated athletes and scientists alike:
Could a human being ride one mile in less than 60 seconds?
Most experts said it was impossible.
They believed air resistance alone would stop a cyclist from reaching 60 mph. But Charles Minthorn Murphy—a Brooklyn bicycle mechanic and professional racer—thought differently. Without major sponsors or futuristic equipment, Murphy relied on courage, ingenuity, and a bold understanding of aerodynamics.
His solution? Ride behind a speeding locomotive and use its slipstream to defeat the wind.
Working with the Long Island Rail Road, Murphy helped design one of the wildest speed experiments in history:
🔹 A custom wooden shield was attached to the rear of a train car, creating a pocket of calmer air behind the locomotive.
🔹 A smooth 2-mile wooden track was built between the rails so his bicycle tires could survive the ride.
🔹 A safety bar was added to keep him from crashing into the train.
The danger was extreme. Move too close, and he could hit a steam locomotive. Fall too far behind, and the wall of air would throw him off his bike.
Then came the moment of truth.

📍 Farmingdale, Long Island
Murphy climbed onto his 21-pound Tribune Blue Streak racing bicycle, dropped low over the handlebars, and chased the roaring locomotive.
For one terrifying minute, he rode through smoke, dust, noise, and flying debris—only inches behind the train.
When the timers stopped their watches, the result shocked the world:
⏱️ 1 mile in 57.8 seconds
⚡ 62.3 mph (100 km/h)
Charles Murphy had become the first person to officially ride a mile in under a minute.
But the ride wasn’t over.
When the train slowed, the protective air pocket disappeared. Murphy slammed into the safety bar and had to be pulled—still clipped into his pedals—onto the moving train by the crew. Bruised, covered in soot, and exhausted, he survived.
The bicycle racer who had been called crazy became known forever as:

The men who row people out to that island inherited the right to do it. Under Maria Theresa, the boat licences went to farmers stuck with the poorest land 🚣.
It was a quiet payment for a thin harvest. The title passed down through generations and stayed inside the same families.
Twenty-three pletna boats still work the lake. They all land at that one jetty on the left.
From there it is 99 steps up to the church door ⛪, and the stairway has been counting them since 1655.

The Fujian Tulou (土楼), located in Fujian Province, are among the most extraordinary masterpieces of traditional Chinese rural architecture and are rightfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
These majestic fortress-like houses span nearly 800 years of history, primarily from the 12th to the 20th century.
They embody the ingenuity and communal lifestyle of the Hakka ethnic minority and the Minnan people.
Viewed from above, their striking geometric shapes — predominantly circular or rectangular — are instantly recognizable.
They first appeared in the 12th century, when the nomadic Hakka people migrated from northern to southern China to escape wars and famines, and began constructing these defensive earthen structures.
The Tulou function as self-contained micro-cities.
A single complex can house up to 800 people or even entire clans.
The outer walls, which can be up to two meters thick, are built using a mixture of rammed earth, bamboo branches, wood, and stone.
This ingenious construction makes them remarkably resistant to earthquakes.
The ground floor is traditionally dedicated to kitchens, the second floor to storage, and the upper floors to living quarters and bedrooms.
At the center of the courtyard stands the ancestral temple.
The massive earthen walls provide excellent thermal inertia, keeping the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.
Many Fujian Tulou are still inhabited today, but life inside them has changed dramatically in recent decades.
While entire families and elders from the original clans continue to live in their historic rooms, some structures are gradually becoming depopulated or falling into disuse.
Since the 1980s, most young people have moved to major cities in search of better opportunities.

On this day in 1969, the Bob Dylan single “Lay Lady Lay” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #94 (July 12)

"Lay Lady Lay" was originally written for the soundtrack of the movie “Midnight Cowboy” but unfortunately wasn't submitted in time to be included in the finished film.
In a 1971 interview for which transcripts were auctioned in 2020, Dylan said the song was written for Barbra Streisand, with Streisand later adding that Dylan wanted to sing a duet with her.
Don Everly of the Everly Brothers recounted in a 1986 Rolling Stone interview that Dylan performed parts of the song for them after a late 1960s appearance by the duo in New York, as they were "looking for songs, and he was writing 'Lay Lady Lay' at the time."
Everly said: “He sang parts of it, and we weren't quite sure whether he was offering it to us or not.
It was one of those awestruck moments."
The Everly Brothers later covered the song on their “EB 84” album, 15 years after Dylan's release.
The song was also a favourite of Madonna, who recalled:
“I used to listen to that one record, 'Lay Lady Lay', in my brother's bedroom in the basement of our house.
I'd lie on the bed and play that song and cry all the time. I was going through adolescence; I had hormones raging through my body.
Don't ask me why I was crying – it's not a sad song. But that's the only record of his that I really listened to."
“Lay Lady Lay” peaked at #5 in the UK, #7 in the US and New Zealand, #8 in Canada, #13 in Ireland, and #18 in Australia.

Florida is one of the only places on Earth where the geography itself feels slightly unhinged… and honestly that’s exactly why people love it. 🌴🌊💀
Because somebody looked at a giant swamp peninsula hanging into hurricane water and said:
“You know what?
Let’s put 23 million people here.”
And somehow it worked.....
Florida stretches nearly 450 miles from top to bottom, which means this state basically contains:
• tropical islands
• giant wetlands
• beach cities
• cow pastures
• rocket launch sites
• theme parks
• retirement communities
• fishing towns
• jungle-looking highways
• and at least one alligator currently judging traffic from a drainage ditch.
North Florida still feels a little Southern:
• pine forests
• small towns
• college football everywhere
• random boiled peanut stands
• and thunderstorms that appear out of absolutely nowhere.
Then Central Florida becomes pure controlled chaos:
• Disney traffic
• I-4 psychological warfare
• endless suburbs
• afternoon lightning storms
• tourists making illegal U-turns across six lanes 😭
And South Florida?
That’s an entirely separate reality.
Palm trees.
Ocean everywhere.
Luxury condos.
Boats.
Heat.
Humidity.
People driving like they’re actively fleeing the law.
Meanwhile the Everglades are just sitting there quietly containing:

Raja Ampat is the marine biodiversity capital of the world - 574 coral species, 1,500+ reef fish species, and reefs that consistently rank among the most biodiverse on Earth.
It's also a large and varied archipelago that means very different things depending on where you go and how long you stay. Here's how it actually breaks down.
THE GEOGRAPHY:
Raja Ampat is a cluster of islands off the northwest tip of West Papua - four main islands (Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool) and hundreds of smaller ones spread across around 50,000 km². The gateway is Sorong, the nearest city on the West Papua mainland. Most liveaboards depart from Sorong harbour. Overnight transits between regions are normal - this is expedition-style diving, not a resort day trip.
THE THREE REGIONS:
NORTH RAJA AMPAT - WAYAG AND KAWE:
The most remote and dramatic part of the archipelago. The iconic mushroom-shaped karst islands that most people picture when they think of Raja Ampat are in this area. Fewer liveaboards reach here, which keeps it crowd-free.
WAYAG CLOSURE UPDATE: Wayag has been closed to tourists since June 2025 and remains closed as of now. The closure followed the Indonesian government's decision to revoke the permits of several nickel mining companies operating on islands in northern Raja Ampat. Former mining workers, who lost their livelihoods when the permits were revoked, blocked tourist access to Wayag and surrounding areas in protest. The Raja Ampat regency government formally closed the area to prevent conflict. The situation remains unresolved. All other parts of Raja Ampat remain open. Check with your operator for the latest before assuming Wayag is on your itinerary.
Sites like Black Rock and Eagle Rock remain accessible and offer spectacular diving. Better suited to more experienced divers comfortable with remote conditions.
CENTRAL RAJA AMPAT - DAMPIER STRAIT, FAM ISLANDS AND PENEMU:
The most accessible region and where most 7-day itineraries focus. The highest concentration of dive sites in the archipelago, and where beginners and experienced divers both get the best of Raja Ampat in one area.
Cape Kri is one of the most famous dive sites in the world - Dr. Gerald Allen counted 374 fish species in a single 90-minute dive here in 2012. Blue Magic, a submerged seamount north of Kri Island, is where oceanic mantas appear on strong current days. Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge are the main reef manta cleaning stations. The Fam Islands and Penemu area add calmer, more sheltered diving with extraordinary soft coral coverage and lagoon scenery.
Central Raja Ampat is also where most of the topside landmarks sit - Piaynemo viewpoint, Arborek village, Sawinggrai for birds of paradise, Kali Biru Blue River.
SOUTH RAJA AMPAT - MISOOL:
One of the most significant marine conservation success stories in Southeast Asia. In 2005, the waters around Misool were being devastated by shark finning and destructive fishing. Misool Resort partnered with local communities to establish a no-take marine reserve - now 300,000 acres patrolled by 18 local rangers. Fish biomass inside the reserve has increased 248% since protection began. Shark numbers up 190%. The local manta sub-population has doubled.
The diving reflects this. Soft coral growth is exceptional - some of the densest coverage in the archipelago. Mantas at cleaning stations. Boo Windows is one of the most photogenic swim-throughs in Indonesia. And topside, Misool is extraordinary - Love Lagoon, Tomolol Cave, a jellyfish lake, Daram ranger station, kayaking through hidden lagoons. More topside activities here than anywhere else in the archipelago.
Best season November-March when swell subsides. Reaching Misool requires an overnight crossing from Sorong, and operators make safety-first decisions on whether conditions allow it.
THE MARINE LIFE:
The numbers tell part of the story. What they don't capture is what a single dive actually feels like: reef sharks cruising past while you're looking at a pygmy seahorse, a school of barracuda forming above while you're watching a wobbegong on the reef floor, mantas circling overhead at a cleaning station with fusiliers streaming past below. Raja Ampat covers the full spectrum - healthy coral, small stuff, and pelagics all on the same trip.
Both reef and oceanic mantas are present - one of the few places in the world where you can encounter both species. Walking sharks (epaulette sharks) are endemic to the Bird's Head Seascape. Wobbegongs are common and well-camouflaged. Reef sharks at most sites. Macro life is exceptional throughout - endemic pygmy seahorses, mandarinfish, ghost pipefish, hundreds of nudibranch species.
FOR NON-DIVERS AND SNORKELLERS:
Raja Ampat is one of the best snorkelling destinations in the world - the reefs are shallow enough that surface snorkellers see an extraordinary amount. Manta encounters, reef sharks, sea turtles, and the sheer density of fish life are all accessible without scuba.
If you don't dive, Raja Ampat is also well served by dedicated leisure liveaboards and leisure & diving liveaboards - the latter carry dive equipment and welcome certified divers but are built around a broader programme of snorkelling, kayaking, beach time, and excursions. Good option for mixed groups or for people who want the destination without the dive focus.
Topside activities on most itineraries include Piaynemo viewpoint (one of the most photographed views in Indonesia - mushroom islands and turquoise lagoons from above), Arborek village women's weaving cooperative, Sawinggrai village for Red Birds of Paradise in early morning, Kali Biru Blue River on Waigeo, Aljui Bay pearl farm, and kayaking through hidden lagoons during surface intervals.
WHEN TO GO:
October-April is the main season - calm seas, peak manta activity, best visibility. December-March is peak with the highest manta activity and most liveaboards operating. Book 6-12 months ahead for this window.
Most boats move west from around April toward the Banda Sea and Maluku for their seasons there. A few operators stay in Raja Ampat year-round, and some run Cenderawasih Bay itineraries during June-August. Boats return to Raja Ampat in October-November as the season opens again.
GETTING THERE:
Fly to Sorong (SOQ) via Jakarta, Makassar or Bali. Build in a buffer night in Sorong before your liveaboard - domestic flight delays on remote routes are common. Most boats depart from Sorong harbour.
FEES:
Port and park fees are usually charged as a mandatory extra on top of the trip price - not included in most operators' base rates, though some exceptions exist. Most operators charge a single surcharge that covers park entry, vessel fees, local village fees, and conservation fees combined. Confirm exactly what's included before booking.

🪶Turkey Vulture: Kids can be... a little gross. Well, at the very least, they can like gross things. Enter the turkey vulture. If bothered, they can projectile vomit 10 feet to discourage further interaction. It urinates on its legs to cool off on hot days. It eats dead stuff. But the turkey vulture is an important part of nature's clean up crew to help stop the spread of deadly disease.
And by way, an important lesson on never judging a bird by its preferences.
