A surprising number of discoveries in physics can be summed up by the sentence, “Wait, you mean that thing is REAL?”
Murray Gell-Mann came up with quarks and thought it was an accounting trick that made it easier to categorize the “particle zoo.” Later, someone performed a scattering experiment and bounced particles off of quarks, demonstrating that they were real, physical things that could interact with other particles.
Electric fields and magnetic fields were thought of as a mental model or a crutch for people who could not handle the vector math that described the strength and direction of magnetic or charge-based forces surrounding a particle. A crutch for experimental physicists such as Michael Faraday, who, building on the work of Hans Ørsted helped to prove that magnetic and electric fields were real, physical things by showing that they interacted with each other (laying the groundwork for every electric motor and generator in existence).
Maxwell's famous equations predicted a “free running wave” that turned out to be all electromagnetic radiation, including light, radio waves, ultraviolet, etc.
The cosmic microwave background turned out to be real and was discovered by engineers trying to track down the source of a signal that they thought was the result of faulty equipment.

To any foreigners confused about what is going on:
Any time you get a first Black person elected to a given office, the next person to be elected will be the white candidate who is perceived to be the most racist. After Harold Washington became the first Black mayor of Chicago, we then elected Richard Daly.
Daly did not have a multi-billion dollar propaganda machine brainwashing everyone on his behalf, so the racists around here were able to immediately admit that Daly was worse than Washington. If nothing else, he bungled the finances badly.
But Barack Obama was president, not just mayor. Worse, he was respected. This fundamentally violates the ideas of white supremacists, who must believe that the worst white man is better than the best Black man. This is why ⅓ of the USA will never turn on Trump. In their minds, Trump is the one who “saved” them from the “humiliation” of living under a Black president. They desperately need you to tell them that Trump is smarter, more physically fit, more competent, more moral, more respected, and less corrupt than Obama.
If you say otherwise (and you should as often as often as possible), you are attacking their most deeply held beliefs about themselves and their place in this world.

This is a bit late, but I'm case some of you are planning to use your tax refund check to buy a printer, I want to clear up some conflicting advice from tech websites.
Here's what they leave out when discussing laser vs inkjet: the cost per page for inkjet printers is highly variable based on how frequently you print stuff.
Inkjets have tiny nozzles that squirt ink onto the page. They are small enough that there is a danger that ink will dry up in those nozzles and clog them, resulting in bad image quality. To prevent this, your inkjet has a little sponge inside. If you haven't printed anything in a while, your printer will park the print heads over the sponge and spray ink into the sponge.
So the less frequently you print the more of your ink ends up in the sponge instead of on paper. There is no upward boundary to how much this can increase the cost-per-page of your printer. Your printer could theoretically empty an entire ink cartridge into that sponge, resulting in an infinite cost-per-page.
Laser printers work by melting a dry powder into the page. The cost-per-page is not really affected appreciably by the frequency of printing.
If you print a lot every day, then the cost-per-page for color inkjet is about the same as color laser (at least for consumer-grade printers based on analysis of printers in an office I worked in a couple decades ago [this was in an environment where all printers were used very regularly and relatively little ink from the inkjets ended up in the sponge]). Monochrome laser printers have the lowest cost-per-page, particularly if you buy the more expensive office-grade laser printers.
If printing photos is important to you, inkjet printers produce better quality color photo images, particularly if you use the expensive glossy paper.

Kamala started going down in the polls the minute she moved to the right.
After the incredible disaster of 2024, the Dems are responding by moving even further to the right.
I was encouraging others to vote for the less fascist party right up until Kamala Harris.
But at this point, it is clear that the Democratic politicians would rather lose elections than be an opposition party.
Those Democratic politicians understand that when they move to the right, fewer liberal voters vote for them, and they do not pick up new votes from conservatives, because the conservatives have all been brainwashed against the Democratic party.
They know that moving right will cause them to lose, and they do it anyway because of our corrupt campaign finance system.
If they wanted liberals to vote for them, they would do at least a few liberal things. Instead, they move further and further to the right with each passing election cycle.
I'll vote in primaries, but I am not voting in any race in the general election unless at least one of the candidates is a non-conservative.

Republican voters were warned.
We know from past experience that whenever Republicans make cuts to Medicare, rural areas feel it the most. Rural hospitals close, which affects how far everyone has to travel if they are injured or sick.
We know that Trump planned to cut Medicaid and Medicare.
This outcome was predictable and predicted.
But rural voters wanted all those farm workers to be ethnically cleansed, so they voted Republican anyway. I hope the crimes against humanity were worth watching your loved ones die because they couldn't get to a hospital in time. I'm not going to waste my time feeling sorry for you because you're the ones who told me that empathy is a sin.

Reminder: when a nuclear power makes nuclear threats, this is a sign of weakness and should be treated as such.
When the US is under normal rule, the nuclear threats look very different from threats from other countries. Normally, it takes the form of vague "We are not taking the nuclear option off the table" language, but it ultimately means the same thing: if we could solve this problem without making nuclear threats, we would have done so already.
This is why the weakest nuclear power (North Korea) generally makes the most nuclear threats.
Look at the times Russia made nuclear threats in recent years. Those were times when the war in Ukraine was going particularly badly for Russia.
And now, Donald Trump has started making nuclear threats at a higher rate. This is an obvious sign that he is losing against Iran. If he were winning, he would not be making those threats.
Keep this in mind any time a nuclear power makes similar threats.
