It seems to depend a ton on what kind of project it is. Complicated nuanced state machine like lightning? Not so great. More straightforward things, or UI? Really really good. It’s often faster and better at the strict “code generation” step but that was always a relatively small (esp cognitive) part of software engineering/being a developer.

My point above was that comments like “I hope the next wave of Bitcoin developers agree with me instead”, which you made above, are pretty shitty. If you want to see a wave of Bitcoin developers that agrees with you, do something about it! Either contribute yourself or help find new developers. Slipping in sideways celebration that someone contributing a ton to Bitcoin was driven out by harassment at the end of a comment isn’t gonna inspire anyone to work on it, and worse it’s just gonna discourage people who might have wanted to bring in the next wave of developers to give up because who wants to bring in more people just for them to suffer absurd harassment?

It seems to continue to get worse. There was a time when the fights were over relevant topics and were less harassment and more deep disagreements over things people cared incredibly much about. Then it was just about attacking “shitcoiners”, sometimes for good reason sometimes less so. Now it’s just about attacking and harassing other bitcoiners because they’re not “pure” enough. Except that unlike nostr things (dunno about repo-hosting specifically, but in general) don’t keep a full copy of everything locally. In radicle any contributor fetches everything and always has it all (for repos they care about). If things go down it’s as easy as one more server and flipping a switch.

Do any of them have any kind of moderation tools (to prevent the inevitable flood of spam and illegal content)? At least gitworkshop.dev doesn’t appear to actually use decentralized storage for everything, still requires a git host.
radicle seems like a much better concept for how to do this type of thing (just use git for everything!) vs bothering with nostr, but if someone managed to build a product that met the requirements on nostr that would also be fine enough.

Phoenix refuses first-receives under a threshold and generally has relatively high fees due to liquidity allocation and on-chain costs. Graduated wallets allow the LSP to allocate substantially less liquidity and allow the first receive to be as low as a zap. It’s a much better UX if you get all the pieces working.

At the beginning of 2025, I mentioned in a number of places that I thought during 2026 we’d get to the point where building your own highly competitive self-custody bitcoin wallet would be doable with an LLM during the year.
Sadly, what mostly happened instead is that wallet developers continued to double-down on fully trusted and custodial platforms, further centralizing Bitcoin and bringing pervasive censorship on Bitcoin closer to reality.
Still, we did (almost) deliver the software required to bring the original claim to bear, with a full graduated wallet in a simple library allowing wallets to offer highly competitive fees and overall UX being close to ready…if anyone wanted it.
I spent a few days over the holidays testing it out, having an LLM build me a native iOS graduated wallet, and it nearly entirely works, basically only missing some bugfixes and the ability to store and display transaction descriptions. At least we built it.

Certainly possible, yes. I’d be fairly surprised, though. Yes, if a CRQC becomes realistic there may be an incentive to hide it so that you can complete it and go steal a bunch of bitcoin, but generally conspiracies don’t really scale - it seems to me it would be incredibly unlikely that a large team of expert scientists (not to mention investors and executives and support staff) would not be able to keep quite that they’re within shooting distance of a CRQC. More generally, while it’s possible that this happens via some huge breakthrough, that isn’t what we’ve seen so far with QCs - they’ve been very slow deliberate progress iterating in small public steps. A startup making good progress for 5 years then suddenly going dark without shutting down may well also be an indication of something.
Ultimately this gets into the “it’s hard to speculate what a future community might do” because there is so much detail to any potential scenario that would go into such a decision. In my (fairly strong) opinion, the community is likely to have enough information to be relatively confident that a CRQC is highly likely at least 1-5 years prior to it existing (where the range is mostly uncertainty about the rate, not uncertainty about the state of things), but it certainly could happen that I’m wrong. Ultimately we can’t decide for the future community, but we do need to at least somewhat predict what they’re going to do because it’s important to understand it to help us decide what to do today to prepare.
This all somewhat ignores the possibility that a government gets a CRQC first. I’m admittedly not incredibly concerned about that, both because so far it appears the most advancements have been in private companies willing to throw money at this, but even if that changes, a government leaking that they have a CRQC by stealing Bitcoin doesn’t seem super likely to me either.

No one is advocating freezing QC-vulnerable spend paths any time soon. And if no CRQC ever appears, then no such freezing should ever occur! The question is only what to do if a CRQC is clearly going to exist within a relatively short time period - do you freeze and let people with seed phrases get their money, or do you let the CRQC operator steal it all?
