Since you're a meteorologist, you already know the answer. You might need to connect some pieces of the puzzle. Thermals, which can sometimes be seen via dust devils, can rise as long as there's unstable air, which you know is where the lapse rate allows the rising air to remain warmer than air around it. When it reaches the dew point, cumulus clouds form above that. That's another visible sign glider pilots use for thermal lift. Thermal lift and dust devils are the same process.

Since thermals are invisible, glider pilots take advantage of any trick to see evidence of them. Each dust devil is just the visible part of a thermal that can go much higher. So seeing dust devils is confirmation there are thermals. Circling birds is another way to see them. Or when you feel a bump up on one side, turn into it and hunt for it.

Spotted on approach to PDX: Royal Canadian Air Force RCAF CC330 (Airbus A330) - this is a Canadian government VIP transport. I don't see news of the Prime Minister visiting Portland (which has happened). So I'm guessing it's an RCAF General visiting related to the North American Aerospace Defense Command NORAD, a joint US🇺🇸/Canada🇨🇦 military command. It flew to PDX from Colorado Springs COS, also a NORAD base. #military #aviation #avgeek

Video of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landing at Portland #KPDX on Runway 28L, as flight number BOE014. This plane was made for LOT Polish Airlines but for some reason wasn't delivered. Lufthansa has bought the plane. Boeing flew it from parking at SKF to PDX. The propeller sound on landing is from the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), which the Boeing test pilots deployed during flight, checking all the systems. It will be repainted for Lufthansa in the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar. #aviation #travel #avgeek

I'm sure you remember the story when the stealth ideas were put up to a secret industry contest. Lockheed's scale model went up on the pole and the radar operator scoffed, saying he could see it. Then the bird sitting on it flew away. Poof! It completely disappeared from the radar.
I had heard that story before. But it was fun to hear it again (and confirmed) from a pilot who flew the F-117 when he was in the Air Force.

I got ~6mi/10km distant pictures of #UnpaintedAirplane Boeing 737 MAX8 N839AK as BOE866 on downwind leg of its approach to Runway 10R at Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX. This is a brand new plane on its "B1" flight (first flight of the airframe flown by Boeing test pilots) out of the factory in Renton #KRNT. Next in line at the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar today: ex-AirEuropa 787-9 from a cancelled order (officially "NTU" not taken up) acquired by Lufthansa to get ahead of 787 factory production. This plane has been parked for almost 2 years waiting for a new buyer. Boeing test pilots ferried it from PAE to PDX. They did tests for 2 hours, including deploying the RAT (Ram Air Turbine) which can be seen behind the main gear and sounds like a propeller. #aviation #avgeek #travel #business #PNW

This is line number 1011, among a bunch that some avgeeks have been tracking from a canceled Norwegian order which were all snapped up by Lufthansa to get ahead of 787 factory production timelines. This Pilatus PC-12 turboprop N21AU landing at Portland #KPDX would probably go mostly unnoticed... except for its radio callsign Boeing 21AU. This is a crew transport coming to pick up the test pilots from Boeing 508. It will take them back to Boeing Field #KBFI in Seattle where the flight test base is located. After flight test maneuvers over eastern Washington State, it landed at Seattle Boeing Field where customer delivery will occur. I decided not to wait at the airport for this plane to depart - the 777-9 was the primary goal. Here's a flight track with a hint about #Boeing 777-9 flight testing progress. In order to be "approved for flight into known icing" the Boeing test pilots have to hunt for known icing🥶❄ conditions and fly in it for hours. They flew from a flight test base in Moses Lake WA #KMWH to Minnesota last Tuesday, and returned to MWH. While leaving conclusions to NTSB, the UPS 2976 preliminary report gives us an idea what comes next. NTSB will continue to look for the cause of the fatigue cracks in the pylon. Now MD-11 & DC-10 operators UPS, FedEx, Western Global, USAF, Ten Tanker, Omega and Orbis have better info what needs inspection. NTSB released preliminary report "UPS Flight 2976 Crash During Takeoff" only 2 weeks after the accident. (Requirement is 30 days.) Preliminary report is just a status of what is known so far, no conclusions or recommendations. The left engine pylon broke when the engine departed. Fatigue cracks were found in addition to the overstress failure. That wasn't an oops, at least not on the part of the crew. The left engine was found on the ground of the airfield where it tore off during takeoff. NTSB is investigating. But there appear to be parallels to the 1979 crash of American 191 in Chicago, where an engine broke away from a DC-10 due to a missing bolt on the pylon. Checklists and inspections seemed to prevent that from happening again, unless it happened again with this one.

It has occurred to many that what we know so far of the UPS 2976 crash has similarities to the 1979 American 191 crash where the left engine departed a DC-10 on takeoff, damaging the remainder of the plane into uncontrollable condition and a crash off the end of the runway. However, we still don't have info to know UPS's cause. The plane got out of minor maintenance and flew 2 flights successfully. Another plane that seemingly doesn't belong here: FlyDubai 737 MAX8 departing Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX. This plane is brand new and not yet delivered to the airline. It arrived at the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar on Oct 17 from the Boeing 737 factory in Renton #KRNT. This is probably the plane's second flight. I'm guessing customer pilots are doing a "C1" acceptance flight test since Boeing test pilots already tested it and it's in eastern Washington for maneuvers. #aviation #travel #avgeek

Something you don't see every day in Portland #KPDX... a Boeing 737 MAX8 of Norwegian Air Sweden. Except I already posted pics of this plane here. It arrived August 18 on its B1 flight as a green #UnpaintedAirplane #PicklePlane. Flights with indirect routing like today's are a big hint that a plane coming from Renton #KRNT to Portland #KPDX will probably turn out to be a new unpainted green plane on its first flight. Boeing test pilots fly out to eastern Washington State while putting the plane through the "test card" checklist. A mystery unpainted green plane I spotted today inbound to Portland Int'l #KPDX was a Boeing 737 MAX8. The pre-painted rudder and winglets are the only hints at this point. It looks like this one will go to Enter Air, a charter airline of Poland. (ADS-B showed Polish registration.) Interestingly, Wikipedia doesn't show any current MAX8 orders for them. I've been concerned hearing people call #USpol ICE deportation flights "ICE Air". It's probably unavoidable people will call it by that nickname. However, the international callsign "IceAir" is and has been IcelandAir, for decades. So if you hear an #IceAir callsign on the radio, scanner or LiveATC, it's IcelandAir doing a normal scheduled passenger flight to or from Reykjavik. Sooner or later someone will need help dealing with a misinterpretation of that. #aviation #business #travel #avgeek

I got pictures from home as it flew by about a mile away on final approach to Portland #KPDX Runway 28L. The pre-painted rudder indicates this one may be for Arajet of the Dominican Republic. You probably had heard of the RAT (Ram Air Turbine for other readers) but may not have remembered. The well-known cases of Air Canada 143 (Boeing 767, "Gimli Glider", 1983) & Air Transat 236 (Airbus A330, "Azores Glider", 2001) each maintained electrical & hydraulic power by deployment of their RATs after fuel exhaustion. In both those cases, Canadian pilots heroically glided from the flight levels to a safe landing on a runway. Both planes were repaired and returned to service.

No, it was absolutely not gliding in. The test pilots can force deployment of the RAT to test that it works. And that was obviously what they were doing.
Even when training in small aircraft, we have a rule not to create a real emergency when practicing for preparedness. I had heard reports of planespotters in Everett pointing out that a brand new plane returned with the RAT deployed. But this is the first time I've seen it for myself.

A mystery is why a 787 came from Everett, since they're all built in Charleston #KCHS for years now. My hunch is a Chinese order (CN reg on ADS-B) was declined due to US trade conflict, stored at PAE. Maybe it has a new buyer or China changed an order. Sounds similar to thunderstorms that confronted a friend and me at Crater Lake the beginning of the month. Each of us saw multiple cloud-to-lake lighting strikes. We sheltered in the Rim Village visitor center. We got some pictures during lulls in the storms. We could see on the radar that new storms kept forming right there as the winds climbed up over the mountains. So we gave up on planned hikes. Taking a merger's name from an acquired company is valid under rights of ownership. US airlines had several high profile examples. AmericaWest Airlines acquired US Airways out of bankruptcy and took the bigger-sounding name (yet kept the on-air callsign Cactus). They did it again when they acquired American Airlines out of bankruptcy and kept AA's name & callsign. Also when Continental acquired United Airlines out of bankruptcy, they took UA's name but retained Continental's globe logo.

The pre-painted rudder and winglets appear to be from AJet of Turkey. This is usually the first flight of the aircraft by Boeing test pilots. Here's today's game of "Name that livery", which we all try to figure out the customer based on a painted rudder on an otherwise-unpainted plane. This is a Boeing 737 MAX8. It landed at Portland #KPDX Runway 28L since that's closest to the Boeing paint hangar. This one appears to me to be for SCAT Airlines of Kazakhstan. We'll know for sure if someone catches it on the way out of painting in some days. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

30 minutes after the green MAX9 arrival, there was a bonus #avgeek sighting. I got cell phone video of a Cathay Pacific Cargo Boeing 747-8F landing on Runway 10R. In those 30 minutes, winds turned around the runway directions and I didn't have time to bicycle around to the other side of the airport. In the background are trusses of the I-5 Interstate Bridge between Portland OR and Vancouver WA, and to the right of it are high-rise buildings in downtown Vancouver WA. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

I think this is rare for Portland, but not unheard of - a second brand new green Boeing in one day, on its first flight coming for paint. (The Boeing paint hangar in Portland has capacity for 2 planes at a time.) This time it's a 737 MAX9. The painted rudder looks to me like it's going to Aeroméxico. This morning I drove to the airport; this time I took my bicycle and got it from a spot where there's no public parking available. #KPDX #aviation #travel #avgeek #PNW

The latest brand new Boeing plane to arrive in Portland #KPDX for painting isn't obvious to me (from the painted rudder and winglets) which airline it will go to. Perhaps it's a non-standard "special livery". This is a 737 MAX8 whose first flight was cancelled 2 days in a row before flying from the Renton #KRNT factory today . #aviation #travel #avgeek

45 years ago, May 18, 1980: the big eruption of Mt St Helens. It started with the biggest landslide in recorded history as the northeast side of the mountain slid away. That uncorked the gas-pressurized magma inside the mountain that exploded without the weight holding it down. An 8 hour eruption killed 57, flattened forests and sent mudflows downstream. Airliners last long enough they shouldn't be named "new" or "next". Airbus wasn't alone in such a mistake. The 3rd generation Boeing 737 was called the "Next Generation" to sound like a Star Trek series current at the time of its design. 737NGs were built from 1996-2020 (civilian models) and still fly. But there's nothing "next" about them now. The following generation "MAX" has managed to destroy the 737's reputation to the point there won't be another "next". #aviation #avgeek #travel

#Avgeek musings... The Airbus A320NEO "new engine option" isn't new any more after a decade. It's actually a geared turbofan (GTF) engine which made it "new" at the time. So should it be called the A320GTFO "geared turbofan option"? Even though technically correct, undoubtedly Airbus marketing would find fault with that name. 😀 #aviation #travel #humor

Coincidentally the next plane to land on Portland Runway 28L after the newly-painted plane's departure was another green 737 MAX8 on its first flight arriving for paint. The painted rudder looks to me like this one will be going to Singapore Airlines. #aviation #travel #avgeek

Today I drove to PDX Airport #KPDX and got pictures of what I think is the same 737 MAX8 that arrived unpainted on the 4th, now out of the paint hangar and departing with its United paint. It flew as a Boeing-owned plane to Boeing Field in Seattle, where presumably the purchase by United will be completed and they'll take delivery there. #aviation #travel #avgeek

I made an edit a couple posts back in this thread, about hints a plane coming to Portland might be a brand-new green plane. Really, the first hint is "Boeing-owned". You can start checking the other factors after that gets your attention. It flies with a Boeing callsign for testing and painting until the purchase is completed later at a Boeing delivery center in Seattle #KBFI, Everett #KPAE or Charleston #KCHS. #aviation #avgeek #business #travel

Boeing sends new planes for painting in Portland as extra capacity beyond what their paint hangars in the Seattle area can handle. At Everett #KPAE they can paint new 777s & 767s (and formerly 747s) on field before first flight. As needed, some fly unpainted to PDX for painting. And new 737s fly out of Renton #KRNT either to Boeing Field #KBFI in Seattle or to Portland #KPDX for paint. #aviation #avgeek #business #travel #PNW

Before a plane arrives in Portland, there are hints an #avgeek can use to anticipate if it's probably a brand new green plane... Boeing-owned, coming from an airport with a Boeing factory, either Everett Paine Field #KPAE (777 & 767, soon Max10) or Renton Municipal Airport #KRNT (737). Then the flight path can be a big hint that the test pilots are putting a never-before-flown aircraft through the "test card" checklist. Today I spotted a brand new Boeing 737 MAX8 arriving from Renton #KRNT on its B1 flight (first flight of the aircraft from the factory with Boeing test pilots) at Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX Runway 28L. As it went by I saw United globe livery on the already-painted rudder. So after this plane gets out of Boeing's Portland paint hangar, United test pilots will probably fly it on its 2nd flight. Assuming tests pass, United will pay for it & take delivery. #aviation #avgeek #business #travel #PNW

While bicycling around Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX, I explored bike-accessible locations to get pictures of planes. As expected, there's limited parking near the airport. So some spots need a bike to get to. These views are along the Columbia River (other side of the levee from Runway 28R/10L), at the end of 28R/10L and in the Cascade Station shopping center between the short final for both 28R & 28L. #aviation #avgeek #cycling #Portland #KPDX #PNW

Sometimes a perceptive #avgeek can tell which airline an unpainted new plane will be going to. The rudder gets installed already with final paint because the paint hangar can't get inside the mechanism with out disassembling it, which they don't want to do. Unless it's a special livery, this looks to me like it's going to Singapore Airlines.

I bicycled to Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX for a closer view of this unpainted Boeing 737 MAX8. Coming from Renton WA #KRNT where the 737 final assembly line is, I suspect this was the very first flight of this aircraft, known as the "B1" flight since it's the first flight done by Boeing test pilots. (A later pre-delivery flight with customer test pilots is called the "C1" flight.) Boeing has a paint hangar in Portland so some new planes fly here on B1 to get painted. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

119 years ago, April 18, 1906: M7.9 "Great San Francisco Earthquake & Fire". The quake actually struck all of coastal Northern California from a 280mi/450km rupture in the San Andreas Fault. SF water mains broke and the city couldn't put out fires that raged for days. Most other cities in the region maintained water service and extinguished their fires. We were chatting this week at the Portland Linux Kernel Meetup about measures for misbehaving aggressive crawlers. Since some obviously use the robots.txt exclusion list as a checklist for what to read, it should start with a honeypot that feeds them bad data long enough to add them to a local or distributed blocklist.

Cumulus clouds are growing as the time arrives that the forecast said thunderstorms would start to arrive in the Pacific Northwest, particularly along the I-5 corridor west of the Cascade Mountains. Looking north, Mt St Helens is still visible from Portland. But the clouds will undoubtedly obscure it soon.
