To see what is likely to happen, go back to 2014 and look at what happened when the development team put their foot down and said arbitrary data was not welcome. Vitalik left Bitcoin to build Ethereum.
BIP110 is a power play. Since the devs abandoned their historical duty to take care of the protocol, users stepped forward to take the ball. And because Core did not port BIP110 to its client, after BIP110 most people and businesses will eventually have to upgrade to Knots to continue having the full validation set. The result is that the majority of the network returns to a tighter default policy, with filters updated regularly and shipped in every new release, roughly every 3 to 6 months.
When the fork expires, policy takes over - but this time it works and is updated frequently. Spammers probably anticipate this, which is why they are so concerned. If all they had to do was move to another opcode or multisig, they wouldn’t be fighting tooth and nail against a BIP they keep calling stupid and dead on arrival.

I know how it sounds. Again, you’ve been looking at the wrong number here. The real threshold for BIP110 was always 0% hash. 55% is just a courtesy to the miners if they wanted to activate this early instead of the users. They can still do this in the next two weeks. And I believe they will. If they don’t, then there’s gonna be violence.

On July 24, 1851, the United Kingdom officially abolished one of the darkest and most despised taxes in its history—the Window Tax. For more than 150 years, this levy quite literally deprived millions of people of sunlight and fresh air, turning British homes into dark, damp, and unhealthy living spaces.
The Absurd Logic of Wealth
The story began in 1696 during the reign of King William III. The English Crown urgently needed revenue to finance costly military campaigns and to offset the enormous expense of replacing the country’s worn silver coinage.
To raise the necessary funds, Parliament introduced a new tax to replace the deeply unpopular Hearth Tax. Rather than sending tax inspectors into private homes to count fireplaces—a practice increasingly viewed as intrusive—the government chose what it considered a more practical solution: counting something visible from the street.
Windows.
The logic behind the law seemed straightforward. The larger a house and the more windows it had, the wealthier its owner was presumed to be. Buildings with more than a specified number of windows were therefore subject to progressively higher taxes. In reality, however, the tax became a social disaster, burdening not the aristocracy most heavily, but the poor and Britain’s emerging working class.
Living in Darkness: The Tax That Harmed Public Health
The public response was immediate—and plainly visible. To avoid the growing financial burden, property owners began bricking up their windows on a massive scale. Residential buildings in rapidly expanding industrial cities such as London, Manchester, and Liverpool were transformed into gloomy stone boxes with little natural light and almost no ventilation.
The greatest burden fell on families living in rented rooms within crowded tenement buildings. Landlords sealed off as many windows as possible, leaving entire floors in near-total darkness.
The lack of sunlight and fresh air created ideal conditions for disease. Physicians of the time warned that poorly ventilated, lightless homes contributed to outbreaks of cholera, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and rickets—the latter becoming so widespread that it was often referred to as the “English disease.”
It is also commonly believed that the famous English expression “daylight robbery” originated during this period. Many people felt that the government was quite literally taxing them for something freely given by God: daylight itself.
By the nineteenth century, advances in medicine, public hygiene, and urban planning made the case against the Window Tax impossible to ignore. Charles Dickens repeatedly condemned its destructive effects on the poor in both his writings and public commentary, arguing that “for seventy years after the tax was imposed, the people’s health was sold for money.”
Under mounting pressure from physicians, reformers, and urban planners, the British Parliament finally repealed the Window Tax on July 24, 1851. It was replaced by the more equitable Inhabited House Duty, which was assessed according to a property’s rental value rather than its architectural features.
The repeal of the tax paved the way for a genuine architectural and public health transformation across Britain. Light and fresh air returned to British homes, while the bricked-up windows—still visible on the façades of many historic buildings throughout England—remain a silent reminder of a time when even sunlight came with a price.

I’m sitting more with the first group. I think Taproot was a Trojan horse. Its promises remain mostly on paper. In both cases a bigger discussion should be had about it.
