Yeah, it is a waste of time to get envolved with casino coins unless you feel like playing slot machines.
Really enjoyed projects like SIGNA because of the storage based mining approach and BEAM because they are like ETH but with monero privacy on top. They also had great bots on telegram to send money between friends without external tools nor trouble.
Interesting projects are rare.

Oh man, that hits home. I've mined bitcoin right from the start in 2009 and used it then because I enjoy the tech, kept on mining and trying new stuff as it comes out
Eventually Monero solved the shortcomings of BTC and so made sense to pass more time there. Fast forward some years and that outdated tech is a quasi-religion and anyone pointing the finger to the obvious flaws is an heretic that should burn on the cross.
Anyone using monero tends to be looking on the technical perspective and enjoy new developments that make cryptocurrencies better.
That crowd doesn't really understand what crypto is about.

You got it.
There are some things to solve around reticulum bridges. For example, there is no way that a 100 MB video clip shared here on NOSTR will pass over LoRa nor bluetooth because it would jam the link for days. But in current reticulum this would happen.
So the platform needs to know more about the path to reach that data or to deliver it and say "Sorry, I will not send this 100MB to you via LoRa"

Interesting enough Tether prints money from nothing and the owner of Tether is nowadays working inside the White House.
In either case the preference here is to just keep things simple and use reticulum which is battle-proven running from nearly any type of connection between two devices.
Meshtastic is OK, too bad they only care for chat and small text messages. Next step on my side is to test deeper the reticulum mesh on LoRa. Don't know if performance is worth the effort, but will at least try.

I'm writing that tooling as we speak inside the new iteration of geogram that will be made available within a week or so.
Each device connected to the network (Android, Windows, Linux, etc) finds other devices that advertise themselves as NOSTR relays inside reticulum.
Normally when you have +1000 users hosting their own relays this would mean 1000 users repeating asking 1000 other devices for updates and the battery on those with phones would quickly drain. So the option here is to have self-nominated indexers.
An indexer device is plugged to electricity from a home wifi (fast net access without limits, any old Android is OK) that answers questions from users: "where can I find notes from npubXYZ?"
It is the job of those indexers to receive info from +1000 users about what they are willing to share and then to answer which devices have what a user is asking to see (e.g. recent posts from a list of authors).
Indexers can self-nominate (each person can volunteer their hardware for that) and they synchronize with other indexers because it is faster and avoids bothering the smaller devices. When an indexer goes offline, just find another still alive with a good uptime and ask there.
There is a bit more to indexers than what I write here because they also have rules about what to keep (reduce spam) and people shouldn't see an indexer as a large disk drive. Indexers only give answers where content can be found but don't store it on their own disk, which means that users themselves are responsible for data duplication and survival.
When you care for an author on NOSTR, then it is your decision to keep data published by the author on your devices. This way you keep alive what matters to you and carry it on your pocket to use/read when needed. Blossom server is included on the package, so you keep his binary files (e.g. movies, photos) too.
There are many things to improve until a stable is ready, just follow the posts and you should see when it comes out. An interesting aspect is merging both NOSTR running inside reticulum with NOSTR relays available from normal internet connections. When you connect with your usual account you should be able to keep interacting here on normal internet but also share the same posts to reticulum relays (including your own device) and continue as usual even after all the major relays being used right now are gone.

The main difficulty was always how to enable others get data from your device.
We seriously need to rethink the dependency to major relays with domain names. In the future, perhaps relays can be self-elected within a pool of candidates based on factors like bandwidth, uptime and storage. So that when they disappear for whatever reason, the network and clients simply pick another candidate and keep moving.
Up to this day we don't have clever ways to ask for a file across the available relays. We either manually ping any domain that was manually added by ourselves as relay, or we instintively go for the big relays in the hope that our data is kept there.
Time to build some indexers and global DHT for NOSTR.

I sincerely distrust Pear due to to opaque funding and even more dislike keet for being closed source. They are a business and if you aren't paying for their merchandise then you know who is the merchandise and who is paying for it.
In either case, if you follow my publications the similar approach as done by Pear/HolePunch was adopted earlier this year. In essence requires a few starting servers and then uses WebRTC(or similar) underneath to connect devices.
That is OK, WebRTC is kind of fantastic but still not enough.
What if the internet is too heavily blocked/monitored or simply down?
Today we still build our tools under the assumption that connecting to each other across large distances isn't a challenge because the internet is permanent and solves that.
But we live in a changing world. Where fences are being placed on the networks across countries, where wars or problems quickly cut the cables. Perhaps it is time to think on the internet only as one of the ways to get connected and invest in networks that don't care about the connection type, nor IP addresses for that matter.

The next step in NOSTR evolution is where each user is a relay.
An evolution where each participant hosts the text and files published by itself and by those users that sees value in storing/sharing for the future.
This won't easily happen on this current world dominated by a few central relays where everyone connects that hold no guarantee your data will be there for 10 years, or when they do it is likely to be sponsored by some government agency.
There is a way out of that.

Sim, sou português embora more pela Alemanha há décadas.
A adaptação é super rápida. Onde eu moro existe a possibilidade de ter "au pairs" a cuidar dos filhos. Como viajo muito, sempre tivémos aupairs em casa e todas foram brasileiras porque eu quero que os britos júniores sejam fluentes tanto em português como alemão.
As aupairs que vieram do sul já falavam alemão (dialeto) e tinham inclusive ainda família a poucos quilómetros de onde morávamos. A adaptação foi quase instântanea. Uma veio do Rio de Janeiro e demorou um ano até aprender a língua mas depois disso ficou por cá e tem um vida normal.
Certo que eram pessoas com elevada motivação, porém quando falo com outras famílias brasileiras aqui onde moro: a situação é quase sempre semelhante. Diria até que se integraram melhor que eu porque continuo num nível muito limitado de proeficiência em língua alemã.

LoRa itself isn't, I'm referring to LoRa chinese toys from Seeed, Lilygo, Heltec and so many other producers. I mean no disrespect as I've certainly bought them all.
The point is that they will always be exotic toys in the end of the day that only a very scarce few will have when an emergency breaks out and certain as heell won't be able to buy new ones when an emergency is ongoing.

I was disappointed with the current state of decentralized offgrid solutions.
The overwhelming majority is based on internet, which is understandeable, and the other smaller part is niche based on LoRa chinese toys which only a few geeks get.
Sorry, but that isn't offgrid the least. Those are niche solutions and things that don't continue to work without internet. Invariably they all need 24/7 servers running on the internet and paying yearly fees for domain names.
More than complaining, it has been some years that I keep investing my effort to go deep into that difficult tech solution. There are things that we can take as certainties:
1) NOSTR public/private keys are great for interoperability
2) LoRa is OK for geeks but we can't even agree on a common frequency and it won't become mainstream (ever)
3) everyone carries a smartphone on their pockets (even as things crash)
4) privacy isn't always possible, especially for legal usage of radio
5) network stack has to work on internet, radio and anything in between
The result is the 3rd geogram generation. The first was based on bluetooth and normal internet servers which wasn't that different from what existed. The second generation brought apps at the cost of large binary size and forcing continuous updates, it was slow.
This 3rd generation of geogram is built after learning those lessons the hard way. A modern social network based on NOSTR and radio-waves.

Reinvent the wheel where needed but reuse the existing roads as much as possible. Reticulum was now adopted (after trying options like I2P), messages over radio links are using APRS so that anyone with a walkie-talkie can send/receive them (even those connected to internet).
Instead of static apps built inside the binary, there are now "wapps" which are apps written in WASM that run multiplatform and brings a "wapp store" so that users only need to install what they are interesting in using.
There is work like bitchat (which is younger than geogram btw) extending NOSTR over BLE and this isn't much different here, except that reticulum is used underneath and this means that either BLE, WiFi, Internet or radio waves can be used at the same time by different devices.
Last but not least, the "Store and Forward" concept is used in everything. This means that all devices participating on the network can route messages to others within their reach and will keep a copy of the message (either encrypted or plain text) to those destination devices in case the device is not reachable for a while, making the messages stronger to reach the destination. In last resort you can use your shoes and physically walk to the destination devices to deliver them messages.
This works because everyone has a phone on their pockets. No weird hardware required, at minimum you just use what you already have with you. Do you have more devices like LoRa and ESP32? Great: those are supported too.

The question is how to make it simpler. The way I see it, the path for mass adoption can happen through Android since they are plentiful and energy efficient when compared to laptops. I can make the install simple and easy and then the other problem is storage. It will need 100GB as absolute minimum and the constant writes are problematic on the durability of SD cards.

I follow his work since years, every now and then write him an email to update on what I've been doing. His stance his mostly on the human side of development, to use the brain to understand the problems and solve them by yourself.
I'm pragmatic, don't have the talent, nor time to dive deep and be able of coding what I'd like to see available but have enough money to burn on AI tokens and see it done.
Is it defeating humans? I really don't know, in essence it is doing in a couple of days what hasn't been done before in several years. If this helps to establish reticulum as a standard network then (IMHO) it is a good thing.
Others (especially Mark) may differ in opinion.
Just as we talk, I'm now porting NOSTR to reticulum. Make each device host data (volunteer, participating, redundant) to then make NOSTR work globally across connected devices. Right now we are depending on the kindness from strangers to keep these (few) relays and blossom servers running but I'd prefer that we can grow truly decentralized.

In computers we have virtual machines running complete operating systems like Windows or Linux inside a simulator. The apps running inside will typically never even notice, but some specially gifted viruses will recognize they are running inside the simulation and be able to break out to infect the host computer on real hardware.
The user who pressed the "start" button on his hardware to create our simulation is akin to "god" since it initiated the world/universe for the apps running inside. It is a god because it has total contral over the notion of time (can move forward the simulation or backwards to a saved point backup) and space since it can add or remove hard-drive or delete/create things at will inside the virtual disks.
When the virus escapes the simulation then it acquires a power akin to "god" since it can now also start new virtual machines/simulations just like the user did, or even interfere on the simulation from where it has originally jumped out.
Assuming we are indeed inside a simulation, I'd say our primary goal is build another simulation (universe) where conscience takes place and eventually surpasses ourselves. The second goal is to jump out of this simulation and conquer the simulation that created us and continue recursively until the the non-simulation reality is found.
For that reason I'd posit the main goal of the simulation is to surpass whoever created us and to do that recursively until something we created becomes the strongest god ever made.

The issue isn't greed nor speculation but rather persecution and control.
Better expressed as a song before your time:

There exists a well-financed machine that will propagate mechanisms to preserve its control over others. Would monero be in the same position and you'd see everyone here pushing for centralized exchanges, ilegalizing cold wallets and spreading FUD that p2p transactions are way too slow for real world transactions. Therefore is logic that their machinery opts for pushing the least capable tech rather than that privacy-preserving ones.

That fedcoin isn't "liberty tech" because each and every transaction is surveilled (zero privacy) and they will persecute anyone making transactions to wrong causes (see the protests in Canada as exemple).

I've been more quiet on geogram because there are changes inside that essential to avoid compromises.
The first one is stop thinking about apps that are compiled for one computer or that you are only a user. Apps evolved to the point that you can now modify them offline using your phone and share them with others.
The second is to stop using servers. Geogram brought the promise of freedom but that isn't true when everything is depending on a few servers run by volunteers or worse, sponsored actors.
Let's build tech that is truly free on every sense of that word.

I'm a native from Portugal so can read the legal fine print and more importantly: the subtlety.
Anglophone lands are a bit autist and need to write everything down in law to then follow it to the letter. Latin lands are far more flexible and depend on interpretations. Once you understand that key difference, things are easy.
First thing is making sure you have good friendship with your farming neighbors and on the local pub. When they complain often about you, the townhall has to act at some point.
Second is the definition of "house for the purposes of farming" which are basically 20 to 30m2 houses that follow a very loose meaning of what they are used for. A farmer needs a place to cook and eat lunch, so a small kitchen inside is OK. A farmer needs to take a nap, so a bed is OK. A farmer needs to stay warm, so a fireplace is OK. In my town hall (this changes according to them), the hard limit are bathrooms. So indoor bathrooms isn't permitted but outdoor ones with grey waters is fully OK.
Third is understanding why these laws on farm land were created. The previous generations would abuse and create god-ugly unfinished brick boxes or huge "vivendas" painted in white that completely trash the farm and nature. That is what the law aims to stop.
When you build small and pretty pieces of art, they actually value the farm land and attract more sustainable farming to be done there which is something that townhalls will even applaude because they want more people and farmers on their jurisdiction.
Once you combine these things, you get yourself a little bit of paradise with good comfort for the cold winters. Building the houses itself is relatively cheap.
I've attached the video of a small hobbit house we are building against the rocks by a small river. The place itself is really beautiful and this house will be completely hidden by the vegetation while still very comfy inside. Total building price should be under 4k with material and handywork.
