Officers would ‘no longer be policing perfectly legal tweets,’ the UK Home Secretary said.
If you needed one sentence to sum up the madness of UK politics and policing, this is it.
In 2023 alone they made 12,183 arrests for online 'communications offences'. Around 33 a day with fewer than 10% resulting in a sentence.
Meanwhile detection rates for real crime collapsed. Police made over 65,000 arrests since 2017 for 'offensive or menacing' messages sent via phone, email and social media, while real crime went unsolved.
It's a relief they're finally admitting it was a waste but why was this allowed to continue for so long?
The irony is that it’s this that feels criminal.

Just got back from CheatCode where I was on a panel called “The Fiat Panopticon: Defending Bitcoin in the UK”.
A couple of days later, The Telegraph publishes this:
Labour draws up equality law revamp that “will impose socialism” on Britain.

The article outlines plans for a new “socio-economic duty” requiring government departments to factor inequality into decision making across schools, hospitals, policing and wider public services.
It ties into the wider point we were discussing on stage, how systems evolve over time, gradually embedding more influence and control into how decisions are made. It does start to raise the question of how far that kind of model goes.
As one critic quoted in the article:
“This is unabashed class warfare targeting the middle class… embedded across the entire machinery of the state.”
Once decisions are filtered through central criteria, it starts to shape outcomes in a very different way.
This is why bitcoin is so important. It gives us a way to separate money from the state.

The FCA lifted the ban on bitcoin ETNs for retail investors...
...but access remains constrained, fragmented and often out of reach.
Banking barriers, restricted mass market classifications, tax disadvantages and limited investor protections continue to push users toward less regulated environments and risky proxies.

Governments around the world are turning access to your own money into a monitored and conditional system.
At the same time, they are building vast centralised databases of your personal data and wealth under the banner of tackling illicit activity and 'consumer protection'.
In the US, banks still have to file a full report including Social Security Numbers for any cash transaction over $10,000*, a threshold set in 1970 that makes little sense in 2026.
None of this meaningfully targets crime, it creates new vulnerabilities by linking identity, wealth and address. This increases the risk that ordinary people are exposed when breaches and leaks happen all the time.
Framed as consumer protection, it is in reality global financial surveillance.

We are sold KYC, AML and surveillance as protection, while the Bank of England moves to restrict 'unhosted wallets' to keep activity within intermediated systems in the name of stability and control.
These rules do little to curb illicit flows but expand data collection, erode privacy, impose costs, and add friction and limit access through banks and intermediaries.
Self custody removes that layer entirely, exposing the limits of that approach.
When policymakers shaping these rules have never used a wallet or sent a transaction, that gap in understanding gets written into policy.
What’s being sold as protection is harm.

As geopolitical tensions rise, capital rotates through dollars and gold and increasingly into Bitcoin as confidence in fiat weakens and demand for non-sovereign stores of value grows.
That’s when you realise you need assets that sit outside direct government control.
As Jasmine Birtles from Money Magpie told me on @nprofile…9m7x:
“People aren’t so sure about dollars, but gold and Bitcoin, yes definitely… people are flying to it for safety.”
Short term price action comes and goes, but the underlying demand for hard assets persists and the fundamentals remain intact.

Blantyre, Malawi is where my Bitcoin journey really began, although I had no idea at the time.
Growing up, I lived in a quintessential English village and apart from a few holidays, that was largely the extent of my view of the world.
When I arrived in Blantyre in 1994, I was struck by the contrast between officials arriving in flashy cars at government buildings while outside, people were struggling and suffering. It was the first time I saw clearly how governments could enrich themselves while failing to look after their own people.
That trip stayed with me and gradually shaped how I think about power, money and the state.
More than thirty years later, learning that @nprofile…e4v9 will take place in Blantyre this year feels remarkable. It brings everything back to where my Bitcoin journey began and to the moment I first saw the problem Bitcoin ultimately addresses ... the need to separate money from the state.

X is already the world’s real time news layer.
Deepfakes are erasing trust online and we are rapidly approaching a world where nothing posted can be believed.
Open Origins tackles this by stamping photos and videos at the moment they are captured, proving their origin and authenticity using cryptographic traceability. The technology was developed out of research at Cambridge University.
If this verification technology were built directly into the X app, every post could carry verifiable origin recorded on a decentralised chain. Anyone could independently check where content came from.
This technology is already being used in major newsrooms to protect authentic media from deepfake manipulation. ITN, the producer behind ITV News and Channel 4 News, is using OpenOrigins to protect its archive from deepfake manipulation.
The system is designed more like Bitcoin than a traditional company product. It runs as a decentralised protocol with multiple nodes, meaning the verification layer would survive even if the company disappeared.
If trust in online media is collapsing, why not solve it at the protocol level?

Wall Street w*nkers chasing ETFs, treasury plays and number go up should probably skip this video.
Bitcoin was never built for their game. It exists as freedom money, the uncensorable tool no government or bank can seize when they weaponise traditional finance.
Digital IDs, CBDCs, surveillance states and online controls are already closing in, deciding who gets economic access. When accounts freeze and dissent gets shut down, your shares and institutional products will not save you. Only self custody Bitcoin does.
I've interviewed people who escaped dictatorships while on government wanted lists with every conventional door locked and Bitcoin let them move value, survive and rebuild.
We must separate real Bitcoin freedom from the Wall Street grift.
When things break, self custodied Bitcoin is the lifeline.

Investor protection should not mean blocking access and forcing exits.
The timeline:
- Pre-2021: Retail investors could hold crypto ETNs inside ISAs.
- Jan 2021: FCA bans ETNs for retail investors.
- 2024: US spot Bitcoin ETFs approved, unlocking major markets.
- 2025: UK reverses the ETN ban after years of campaigning.
- April 6 2026: HMRC reclassifies crypto ETNs into IFISAs that most mainstream platforms do not offer.
Major providers such as Hargreaves Lansdown and AJ Bell currently do not support IFISAs for crypto ETNs, leaving many investors with limited or no transfer options.
Buy before the deadline and you may still face forced liquidation if your provider cannot hold the product under the new rules.
Markets need clarity and access, not moving goalposts.

It only takes one corrupt government official or compromised employee for you and your family to be at risk, with your wealth tied to your identity and visible on an open ledger.
Regulators continue to treat greater data collection as synonymous with safety, but the reality is increasingly reflected in kidnappings, coercion, torture and in some cases death.

Bitcoin transactions are transparent by design, but identity is not meant to be.
The growing accumulation of KYC data, public records and repeated breaches is creating a direct personal security vulnerability.
Torture, weapons, family intimidation and coercion are no longer rare. Risk is increasingly shifting from institutions to individuals.
In 2025, 76 documented 'wrench attacks' were recorded globally, a 77% increase from 2024. France jumped from 4 total cases (2017–2024) to 20 in a single year.

As I highlighted to Cointelegraph, Gemini's departure from the UK is a warning sign for policymakers chasing crypto hub dreams.
Firms like Gemini are focusing on markets like the US and Singapore, where high compliance costs and limited opportunities don't outweigh the benefits.
Businesses will stay and scale here if the economics make sense. It's time for clearer rules, faster guidance, and real differentiation to make the UK competitive again.

This is what I told Payment Expert on Gemini's exits.
Gemini is describing a regulatory regime that is more expensive and less certain than alternatives, leaving firms to reallocate to where they are treated best.
If the FCA and UK policymakers want innovation here, they need to fix that rather than celebrate frameworks that chase business away.

Gemini has announced it is leaving the UK, alongside exits from Europe and Australia, and is refocusing on the US and Singapore.
I discussed exactly this risk at the Financial Times Digital Assets Summit last May.
This is what happens when compliance becomes cumbersome and prohibitively expensive. Smaller companies are pushed out first. Over time large and established businesses reassess whether it makes sense to continue operating in an environment where regulatory uncertainty, cost and process complexity keep increasing.
Gemini is not a small startup, it is one of the largest regulated exchanges to have operated in the UK.
When firms of this size choose to concentrate activity in jurisdictions they view as more business friendly, it reflects how growth conditions, capital allocation, and long term viability are being weighed.
What we are seeing is business leaving the UK, reduced competition, slower growth, and fewer companies choosing to build here.
This is an important moment for policymakers and regulators to reflect on how current frameworks are affecting business confidence, competition, and growth in the UK.

I understand why you view it this way. But there are practical issues that cause real harm to people in the UK. For example, the FCA still does not properly distinguish between bitcoin and crypto. Add to that the influence of stablecoins, the flow of money, and increasing centralisation and co option.
I am fully aware there are forces at play, much like those Simon Dixon talks about, that make this feel pointless at times, and in some respects I agree. But there are things that can be done to improve conditions for people buying, holding, and mining bitcoin in the UK.
I set out some of these concerns in an article I wrote ten months ago. Much of it still stands, and in fact several aspects have become worse. My conclusion now is that while they cannot fully capture the base layer, they will try. Companies like Tether, and those linked to it, will increasingly build and control L2s.
I am not saying it is perfect. Bitcoin is not perfect. But where we can help steer understanding and educate and change harmful policies …..it is better that we exist than that we do not.

We did have big plans, as set out in our 2026 goals. Unfortunately, after a year of fundraising and seeing companies choose to work with crypto lobby groups, we started this year with two strong potential supporters. One later decided not to take on any additional trade associations, and the other again opted for a shitcoin lobby group.
The lack of funding has had a serious impact on the team’s available time, and the combination of these factors landing at once has meant we’ve had to scale back significantly.
We will continue with the work outlined in Section 1, but have had to place the tasks in Sections 2, 3, and 4 on hold until we can secure funding.

After 3 years at Bitcoin Policy UK, having worked as Head of Mining and Energy before becoming CEO, I'm stepping back from this role.
We've achieved so much with limited resources: delivering serious Bitcoin only policy engagement and gaining credibility with UK policymakers. We are all proud of that legacy.
However, the required funding did not materialise, so BPUK is working towards minimal maintenance mode by 31 March 2026.
All remaining funds and donations will help keep the work alive, with the rest held in Bitcoin in hope we can revive the organisation when the UK is ready.
With Bitcoin at 60% dominance and the UK a leader in finance and computer science, this should have been a clear priority. The UK still needs to move beyond its altcoin and speculation phase.
It's not over, it's just not the right time. We are still early.

The recently implemented Crypto Asset Reporting Framework is still being described as a narrow “crypto tax reporting” change. That framing misses what’s actually happening.
CARF doesn’t calculate tax owed. The data it gathers is too blunt for that. Instead, it aggregates holdings and transaction data to build risk profiles, flagging individuals for scrutiny without the context needed to reflect their true tax position.
As I wrote last year,
“CARF remains a high stakes experiment regulating the crypto asset sector.”
The scale of data collection is unprecedented. Under the proposals, exchanges and service providers will hold and transmit balances and transactions, as well as home addresses obtained through KYC and AML checks.
“Given the substantial data volumes and compliance mandates, the risk of misinterpretation is significant.”
The concentration of sensitive financial and personal data across dozens of jurisdictions increases the likelihood of false positives, unwarranted enquiries, data breaches and real world harm.
Governments present CARF as transparency. In practice, it’s a global surveillance framework applied to a system that wasn’t designed for it, with consequences that extend far beyond tax.
“CARF’s rollout marks an important moment for the crypto industry. Its success will depend on balancing government's push for financial transparency with individuals' desire for privacy. Whether it strikes this balance or intensifies existing tensions remains to be seen.”

Digital ID was debated in Parliament, in a Westminster Hall debate opened by Robbie Moore MP on behalf of the Petitions Committee and triggered by a petition signed by nearly three million people.
The response from MPs across parties was overwhelmingly NO.
Across all parties, Conservatives, Labour backbenchers, Liberal Democrats, Greens, the SNP, Reform and Independents raised the same core concerns:
• Moves Britain toward a surveillance state
• Irreversible centralisation of personal data
• Major cyber security risk
• Serious risk of mission creep• Not in the manifesto and no democratic mandate
• Constituents do not want it
• Would become mandatory in practice
• Harms the most vulnerable and the digitally excluded
• Creates a two tier society
Reading from a constituent's message, Jeremy Corbyn, an independent MP, said:
"Digital ID is a deeply illiberal idea that threatens privacy, autonomy and the open access we should be standing for.
It risks creating a two tier Britain where access to basic services, healthcare, housing, employment, even voting, depends on whether someone has the right app, paperwork or digital trail."
Reflecting the vast cross party consensus in the debate, Corbyn endorsed an intervention from Andrew Griffith MP warning about civil liberties, the presumption of innocence and surveillance concerns, saying "he's making an important point," before going on to warn that digital ID is "being pushed by commercial interests" and urging Parliament to "say no to the government, as we have said no before."
In the debate, opposition to the proposals spanned both the political right and left.
Speaker after speaker warned that once this infrastructure exists, it will expand into work, housing, banking, benefits and public services, regardless of today's assurances.
What this debate showed very clearly is that left versus right is no longer the most meaningful divide.
The real divide is libertarian versus authoritarian.
MPs from across the political spectrum lined up on the liberty side. That matters, particularly in a country with a growing reputation for restricting free speech and quietly sleepwalking into authoritarianism.
It also raises uncomfortable questions ... If no one wants this, and Parliament agrees it is dangerous, why is it being pushed so hard?
Jeremy Corbyn was clear about the role of commercial interests, a concern reinforced by policy advocacy from groups such as the Tony Blair Institute and Visa, which has openly argued for the introduction of digital ID's.
Others also raised concerns about lobbying, infrastructure vendors, payments firms, and ID adjacent technology providers.
This petition and debate offered a rare moment of reassurance in our parliamentary system. MPs listened, understood the risks, and spoke up.

One year ago today, I became CEO of Bitcoin Policy UK.
Since then, our small team of volunteers has achieved what most well funded organisations struggle to do, in one of the toughest environments for UK businesses.
Individuals and companies are leaving the country at a record pace, and the policy space is dominated by pay to play dynamics and crypto lobbying money.
Despite that, we have delivered. What we have accomplished together:
- Helped secure Bitcoin’s recognition as property in UK law.
- Responded to government consultations, submitted detailed policy papers, and held constructive conversations with MPs, Lords, regulators, and civil-service teams.
- Launched our new website
- Distributed our 2025 Manifesto to all 650 MPs and expanded our research across energy, tax, financial inclusion, and infrastructure.
- Hosted events on Human Rights, Bitcoin in Business, and Bitcoin for Institutions.
- Had a presence and a main hall stall at the 2025 Labour Party Conference, opening new Bitcoin conversations.
- Partnered with 11 organisations and hosted multiple BPUK events that connected the bitcoin industry with policymakers, energy experts, and regulators.
- Appeared in multiple podcasts, interviews, and media articles
-Set up mining proof of concepts
-Launch our 'On the Record' podcast.
- Spoke at industry events around the world.
- Designed and delivered the ‘Contact My MP’ App, helping supporters reach their representatives directly and raising the bar for political engagement in the Bitcoin space.
All of this has been achieved by a team of outstanding volunteers with no full time staff, very modest funding, and no compromise to our values. We have been pushing uphill in a system where influence is usually bought.
We have moved the dial and proven that the UK does have a place in Bitcoin’s future, provided we continue to fight for it.
Year one was foundations.
Year two is where we build strength and momentum.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us, shared our work, and contributed time, expertise, or energy. BPUK exists because the community wants it to.
Here’s to the next chapter.

The BBC has now been found to have misled the public on two of the most emotionally charged subjects of our time: Gaza and Trump.
These are not comparable in scale or consequence. One involves unimaginable human suffering, the other a turning point that exposed how politics, media, and public trust became dangerously entangled. But they share a single truth.
When the media manipulates context, selectively edits, or conceals crucial facts, it betrays public trust and undermines the very fabric of society. When national institutions spread or enable falsehoods, they divide, destabilise and damage democracy.
In July, the BBC's Gaza: How to Survive a War Zone was ruled 'materially misleading' by Ofcom after it failed to disclose that the child narrator's father held a ministerial role within Gaza's Hamas run administration, a grave breach of transparency that warped the audience's understanding.

Just months later, a leaked 19 page memo revealed that BBC Panorama had spliced two separate parts of Donald Trump's 6 January speech, almost an hour apart, to make it appear that his call to "fight like hell" directly followed his direction for supporters to march on the Capitol, omitting his earlier words urging them to protest "peacefully and patriotically."

In addition, this week the BBC's Executive Complaints Unit has upheld complaints against presenter Martine Croxall for correcting "pregnant people" to "women" on air and rolling her eyes, judged to be a breach of impartiality rules because the facial expression "laid it open to the interpretation that it indicated a particular viewpoint".

The same Executive Complaints Unit that leapt into action over an eye roll stands in clear contrast to my own experience dealing with the BBC’s wider complaints system.
Over 13 months, my evidence based submission, detailed, factual and supported by documentation, was passed from department to department, never properly addressed and never resolved. The responses I received bore little resemblance to the points I raised. They obfuscated, deflected and left me wondering whether I was witnessing staggering incompetence or something more deliberate.
These can't be accidental lapses. They are editorial decisions made in full awareness of how powerful the subjects are, and how easily emotion can override the truth.
The BBC knew the weight of both narratives, but still chose narrative over accuracy. This is more evidence of a dereliction of its public duty and a dangerous precedent for democracy itself.
For those paying attention, we knew this was happening, though perhaps not to the extent it was or still is. I still know people who rely on the BBC as a trusted news source, believing its content is fact checked, verified, and impartial. It is none of those things.
It doesn't matter where you sit politically, left, right, or anywhere in between. This should concern everyone.
When a public broadcaster, paid for by the public under threat of penalty, stops informing and starts editing reality, it no longer serves democracy. It undermines it.

Hal Finney imagined a future where banks would hold bitcoin as reserves and settle with each other using it, integrating rather than replacing the financial system. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stay alert to how easily integration can become capture.
In this podcast, Simon issues a series of serious warnings:
- Many underestimate what Wall Street is willing to do to take your bitcoin. Everyone’s going to go through some really hard lessons in the coordinated, engineered process to teach people they should have bitcoin in self custody.
- People come in for Number Go Up technology and until they go through a disaster, they don’t realise that money you can own and money you can spend is the real utility.
- The true utility of bitcoin is self custody.
- There’s a crucial distinction between bitcoin in custody, bitcoin in self custody, and everything else in crypto. If you don’t figure that out over the next five years, you’ll end up in a Universal Basic Income surveillance state, an Orwellian nightmare where you get the vaccine or you get negative interest rates.
Which side of that are you going to be on?
Simon predicts that anyone who does it through Wall Street via ETFs, pensions or bitcoin backed loans will see a repeat of 2021. They will live through another elaborate scheme that ends with your bitcoin in their wallets and under their control.
We will live in a two tier bitcoin system with Wall Street instruments on one side and bitcoin in self custody on the other.
Self custody is ultra ultra important for people to figure out.

Harvard economist Matthew Ferranti has published a peer reviewed study showing that central banks preparing for sanctions risk should hold more than just gold. His model demonstrates that adding Bitcoin to reserves strengthens resilience when access to traditional assets is threatened.
For the first time, a peer reviewed economics journal is treating Bitcoin as a credible reserve asset rather than speculation.
What took them so long?
A reminder that money can be weaponised, while Bitcoin remains neutral, borderless, and open to everyone.
At the Financial Times Digital Asset Summit, the UK’s Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Emma Reynolds said Bitcoin “isn’t for us.” Ferranti’s study shows why the government must start researching Bitcoin’s role in reserves.

These measures are framed as fighting crime. But similar rules in tradfi have existed for years and haven’t stopped fraud or money laundering.
What they do create are honeypots of personal data, risks for law-abiding people, and deeper state oversight. This is about normalising authoritarian tools, not AML or safety.
Decades of KYC and financial surveillance show how control creeps in rule by rule. That same authoritarian logic already governs speech, from the Online Safety Bill to Graham Linehan’s Heathrow detention over tweets.
And now digital IDs are back on the table, linking finance, identity and turning everyday access into a system of control.
Add in programmable money and street surveillance, and you have a panopticon, a 1984 scenario darker than Orwell imagined.

Bitcoin mining is essential energy infrastructure.
Hut 8, named after Alan Turing's WWII codebreaking hut, has rebranded to American Bitcoin and plans to start trading on Nasdaq after merging with Gryphon Digital Mining.
They will no longer be a pure Bitcoin miner. They plan to become an energy and compute infrastructure operator, expanding into AI hosting, flexible grid partnerships, and advanced computing markets.
The Trump family involvement brings mainstream attention, some positive, some polarising.
What remains constant is that Bitcoin itself is neutral, independent of politics or branding.
For once, Bitcoin is in the headlines for the right reasons.
