Something I really don't understand with LLM adoption is, WHY SO MUCH HURRY???
What are you afraid of? What does it mean to "fall behind" here?

1. genuinely a chore to enable it, so I don't want to rely on packages there too much.
2. yeah nonGNU and GNU elpa have a higher guarantee of being free software.
3. Also not a fan of MELPA updating to latest everytime (I think it follows latest commit?) Though there is a melpa stable.

That might be true for some programs. But most programs (TUI) are not at all designed for that.
Vim, for example, is not at all like that. I don't know if you can at least pipe buffer regions into programs or not, probably can. But that is something I do all the time inside Emacs.

`dired-copy-filename-as-kill` is also a thing, you just need to provide it with 0 as a prefix argument, so `0 w` will do what you need.

here is how you find it.
While in Dired Mode go to a file and run
C-h k RET
This will tell you what function runs when you hit RET in a Dired buffer.
From the help buffer, click on the source code file name, or just hit s.
Can see `dired-get-file-for-visit` is being called.
Hope it saves you some time in the future when trying to extend GNU #Emacs. 😁
