This is a new development. Previously Russia didn't have the range, and wasn't close enough, to threaten Kramatorsk with FPV drones much. Unfortunately this is gradually changing.
Friends of mine are in that area, holding Russia back. They're the ones keeping that mother and child safe. One of the soldiers I know recently paid $1800 of his own money to get another vehicle that they need. I'm trying to get him paid back, and get funds for more vehicles. So far I've gotten 726,360sats (~$586 USD):

As I said, it's about 15% to 25%. Making the 95% claim in the article obviously wrong. It's a trivial thing to get right.
Solar will of course turn a higher % into heat than many highly reflective surfaces. So the overall concept may work. But not with the numbers quoted.

It's hilarious how easy it is to debunk this article. Typical solar panels convert about 15% to 25% of the incoming light into electricity while operating. That's energy that is removed from that location entirely, and re-released somewhere else. This is one reason why putting solar panels on your roof can keep your house cooler.
It is physically impossible for efficiently operating solar panels to absorb 95% of the incoming sunlight.

On a bigger scale, this is total nonsense. The biggest funders of war and violence right now are Russia and Iran. In both cases their ultimate primary funding source is oil and gas revenue; in the case of Russia a lesser funding source is the Russian government's ability to force companies to simply work for free in exchange for future promises of income that both sides know will probably never be paid. Fiat currency has nothing to do with that, and Bitcoin only fixes that problem to the extent that it allows societies to rise up.
But in Russia the population genuinely supports war. That's probably true for most of Iran too. They're infested with Islamic psychopaths.
Even if you think the US and other Western countries are the cause of "war", the argument still fails: the US only spends a small part of total GDP on their military. A Bitcoin standard doesn't change anything there.

Good. Trump's track record on diplomacy with Iran and others is bad. It's far better to solve this with military force and defeat Iran entirely.
The biggest challenge is that a decent % of the Iranian people are supporting the US. So ethics is demanding a more costly surgical approach than you be appropriate for, e.g., Russia or Gaza.

I also managed to do some interviews with some of the soldiers and foreign recruits of the unit. Flash Battalion is an English speaking one, so mainly from the US and UK/Commonwealth. It's telling how many of the recruits are conservative. One was even a self described MAGA Republican; another from New Zealand had previously worked in the gun industry in manufacturing. Which of course is now basically dead in NZ. Those videos should come out soonish once their editors finish.

That's my friend Sarah.
The reason why he's wearing those dorky glasses is because two weeks ago, while on a mission, he and some fellow Ukrainian soldiers nearly got killed by a Russian FPV drone. They were so close to the explosion that a thin layer of Sarah's eyes got burnt off, changing their shape. So while previously he didn't need glasses, now he does. One of the other soldiers who was with him is still in hospital with an arm full of shrapnel.
After spending the night in a basement they evacuated on foot, and Sarah spent some time in the hospital for a concussion before returning to work this week.
This morning Sarah volunteered for yet another mission because they needed a medic, and he was the only one they had on hand. Sarah again was nearly hit by yet another FPV drone and is back in hospital again.
And yes, Sarah can definitely shoot a gun. He's used his rifle to shoot multiple FPV drones out of the sky; if he couldn't he would already be dead.

IIRC Ukraine publicly confirmed the use of storm shadows. But they did not say if that was the only weapon used.
There's a good chance they used more than one weapon type at once to defeat Russia's anti-air defenses cost effectively.
Also, there's speculation that the reason why storm shadows were approved for this usage is that Iran was found to be using shahed drones with components made in that factory. Basically, that pissed off the US and UK, who were happy to let Ukraine use overwhelming force to attempt destroy the factory.

In the long run, it doesn't matter what happens inside Russia it their economy is in ruins and they can't afford to fight. How they deal with that is their problem.

I'm writing this from a coffee shop in Kyiv that has a spent artillery propellant charge tube holding up a flower pot... Pretty typical decoration around here.
I think you are a great example of how Dubai could easily lose _very_ badly in this war, even though objectively there isn't all that much hazard. Because Dubai has attracted so many people for tax and business reasons who don't really like the city, and have never put down real roots there, they have a large population who have no interest in supporting Dubai when times get a bit tougher. That's not a slight on you. It's just rational: why put up with that for Dubai?
In Kyiv even after the worst winter in the entire war, with power cuts so severe that you might get two hours a day of power, and hundreds of buildings had to turn off the water due to frozen pipes, there's still lots of _new_ businesses opening. Like the coffee shop I'm in right now. The population still here cares about winning and sees a future in Ukraine. And Ukraine is worth saving.
I think there's a high chance this ends relatively quickly because the US and Israel have the military capabilities to really crush Iran's ability to fight. In that circumstance Dubai can probably bounce back.
But if this doesn't end quickly, e.g. maybe due to some bullshit pseudo-ceasefire from Trump losing interest, all it would take is for Iran to keep launching a few attacks a week at Dubai and the wider UAE to keep businesses and the airports fucked up.

Letting Iran get nuclear weapons would be an absolute disaster; letting them build shahed drones by the tens of thousands, both themselves and in partnership with Russia, was already a disaster. I personally have seen the results of that here in Ukraine.
"Who started it" doesn't even matter. They're extremist Jew-hating, Russia allied, islamists who have directly and indirectly killed tens of thousands of good people this year alone. The faster Iran's islamists are wiped out the better.
Hopefully that doesn't need to involve destroying all of Iran in the process. But that's ultimately up to the people of Iran to reject extremist Islam. If they fail to do that soon we should permanently crush their economy to ensure they won't be a threat in the future.

It's underappreciated how important it is to not just destroy factories, but also to kill and maim the Russian's working at those factories. It's a lot harder and more expensive to replace a skilled worker than it is to replace a tool bought from China.
Cutting off his hand will probably prevent the deaths of dozens of Ukrainians.
To that end, Ukraine should copy Russia's highly effective double tap strategy to discourage rescue operations. That man might still be able to train his replacement, or successfully work with his remaining hand. It'd be better if he had bled to death waiting for a rescue that never came.

Ukraine isn't using much small arms ammo any more. It's becoming quite common for soldiers to simply never have a reason to fire their rifle, other than shooting at drones. And that is increasingly being handled by shotguns with birdshot and other specialty anti-drone ammo.
Re: tomahawk missiles, the US hasn't provided any to Ukraine. They should have: Ukraine could have used them to destroy the shahed factories producing the same drones that are now attacking Amazon data centers...

In this case the issue is an autistic child who has panic attacks from air raids. Safety isn't even relevant. It's that the kid can't mentally handle the level of danger.

That's just Russian propaganda aimed mostly at westerners. They are invading for the same reason they've invaded their neighbors for ventures: Russia is an imperialistic culture that constantly tries to expand and subjugate.
Russia wasn't always so big... Russia got that way through centuries of invasions.
It's notable how the so-called "Russian part of Ukraine" has fared the worst through all this. Russians straight up massacred Ukrainians in Eastern Ukraine every chance they got. Likely at least 30,000 in Mariupol alone. Hell, when I was in Sloviansk recently the same day I was there Russians used an FPV drone to attack a 16 and a 17 year old. Fortunately they survived.
In Kherson, a notably Russian speaking part of Ukraine, Russians have done literally thousands of attacks with small drones against civilians, with hundreds dead. They don't give a fuck about "Russian speaking Ukrainians". They just want to subjugate Ukraine.

Also, re: "meat grinder", it's a relatively one sided meat grinder. Ukraine has been willing to slowly trade land for men; Russia has been willing to trade men for land. In parts of the front the kill ratios get as high as 30 to 1.
I personally have met drone pilots who have killed hundreds of Russians. It's not even that remarkable. Russia loves relentless small attacks that gradually make progress at the cost of huge numbers of men.

That's exactly what a Ukrainian commander told me awhile back. We were talking about supplying drones to the front, and he was telling me about how much they were focused on finding little efficiency improvements in things like packaging and assembly. All those 1% improvements add up.

Russians aren't. Russia is fighting almost entirely with volunteers. It's illegal in Russia for conscripts to be used within Ukraine, and that law is fairly well followed. The Russians dying in huge numbers are something like 95% volunteers, and paid very well for the risk they took.
Ukraine does have the draft, and those men do get used to defend Ukraine. Also, a lot of people volunteer in liu of getting drafted. I personally know a few people who volunteered because they'd rather be able to choose their assignments.

You can lie all you want. The fact is no reputable source thinks 14k civilians died in the Donbas before 2022.
Russia of course claims otherwise. But Russians are guilty of mass murder, including on the Donbas region, so their lies can be dismissed.
Hell, two days after I last visited Sloviansk, Donetsk, Russia used multiple shahed drones to attack the same passenger train I would have taken if my friend's car had broken down sooner. And that same train was the scene of a massacre in 2022 when Russia bomed Kramatorsk station when it was full of civilians fleeing Russia's invasion.

That 14k number is simply fake. The actual number of civilians killed is about 3400, a number that includes deaths directly caused by Russians. And of course, Russia is the one who invaded and they are responsible for all those deaths.
Ukraine simply wasn't "bombing Donbas". They were defending themselves, and did a pretty good job of not killing Ukrainians in the process.

That's from a very well insulated modern building, so it stays pretty warm even with power (and heat) off most of the day.
Overall in Ukraine every single large thermal power plant has been damaged or destroyed by Russian attacks. One of the few exceptions is the three nuclear plants in unoccupied Ukraine. But Ukrainian intelligence thinks Russia is preparing to bomb them as well. Most likely non-nuclear infrastructure on the sites (Russia has already attacked transformers next to nuclear plants). But hey, Russia was willing to bomb the Chernobyl containment so who knows.
Killing Russians makes the world a better place. They're just psychopaths.
