# When AI Makes You Less Productive
Artificial intelligence may increase productivity on average. It can generate drafts, summarize information, reorganize ideas, write code, produce illustrations, and convert rough thoughts into polished language in seconds.
But averages conceal individual outcomes.
For many people, depending on how they use it, AI will not increase productivity. It will decrease it. In some cases, it will create considerably more work than would have existed if the person had completed the task without AI.
The problem is not merely that AI occasionally makes mistakes. The deeper problem is that AI can produce incomplete work that looks finished.
## The Illusion of Completion
Before generative AI, unfinished work usually looked unfinished. A rough draft contained awkward sentences. An incomplete design had visible gaps. A poorly understood subject produced confused explanations. These defects warned the author and the recipient that more work was necessary.
AI removes many of those warnings.
It can take an incomplete description and produce something coherent, organized, confident, and professionally formatted. The result may have headings, logical transitions, complete sentences, and an authoritative tone. It may look like a finished product even when it is only a polished interpretation of an incomplete request.
This creates an illusion of completion.
The user sees something that appears substantially better than what he could have produced in the same amount of time. He therefore assumes that the work is substantially closer to being finished.
That assumption may be false.
The output may accurately reflect everything the user told the AI while omitting everything the user failed to mention. Those omissions are often the most difficult defects to detect because they do not appear as errors. They appear as absences.
You can correct a wrong sentence once you see it. It is much harder to identify the paragraph that was never written, the requirement that was never considered, the stakeholder who was never consulted, or the assumption that was never tested.
## Garbage In, Polished Garbage Out
The old computing principle still applies: garbage in, garbage out.
Generative AI adds a dangerous refinement:
**Garbage in, polished garbage out.**
The output may be grammatically excellent, logically arranged, and visually convincing. None of those qualities prove that it is complete, accurate, or suitable for its intended purpose.
AI generally works with the information and direction it has been given. It does not necessarily understand the full situation surrounding the request. It does not automatically know the unstated requirements, organizational history, interpersonal constraints, legal implications, technical dependencies, or practical consequences that the user has neglected to provide.
When information is missing, an AI system may do one of several things. It may omit the missing material. It may generalize. It may insert conventional assumptions. It may produce language that sounds specific without actually resolving the underlying uncertainty. In the worst cases, it may fill the gap with a plausible guess.
The result is often not obviously defective. It is deceptively adequate.
## Editing Can Be Harder Than Writing
People frequently assume that generating a draft with AI and then editing it will be easier than writing the material themselves.
Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is not.
Editing AI-generated work requires a different and often more demanding kind of thought. The editor must reconstruct the actual purpose of the document, compare that purpose against the generated text, identify both errors and omissions, and determine whether the AI introduced assumptions that were never authorized.
This can be harder than writing the first draft.
When writing from the beginning, the author builds the argument or design incrementally. He knows why each element is present because he placed it there. He encounters uncertainties as they arise and is forced to resolve them.
When editing AI-generated material, the author receives a completed-looking structure all at once. He must reverse-engineer it. He must determine which parts are grounded in his instructions, which parts were inferred, which parts are conventional filler, and which essential parts are missing entirely.
The surface polish can interfere with this process. Clear prose creates cognitive confidence. Good formatting suggests organization. A strong conclusion suggests that the argument has been completed. The reviewer must deliberately resist these signals and examine the work as if it were unfinished.
## AI Can Transfer Work Rather Than Eliminate It
The productivity loss becomes greater when unfinished AI-generated work is delivered to other people.
A person may spend twenty minutes generating a proposal, report, specification, presentation, or plan and believe that he has saved several hours. But if the document is incomplete, those hours have not necessarily been saved. The work has merely been transferred.
A manager must identify the missing decisions. An engineer must resolve contradictory requirements. A client must explain information that should have been requested earlier. A colleague must distinguish factual content from plausible filler. A team may hold a meeting to repair misunderstandings caused by a document that was presented prematurely.
The original author experiences speed. Everyone downstream experiences rework.
From the perspective of the organization, productivity has declined.
This is especially dangerous because the person using AI may continue to believe he is highly productive. He is producing more documents,

If you're not already maintaining batteries for other purposes, yes, a battery lawn mower sucks. Unmaintained batteries equals needing new batteries all the time. I got a corded lawn mower for low maintenance for places I can use it. I also maintain three gas mowers for other places, but usually only use one. A battery mower would be nice since I already use the batteries in other power tools.

Following on The Nostr does not need to be public. Right now, you can create private lists, which means nobody can see your special private feed.
BUT... It could be that your published "following list" contains encrypted data where only those you follow can see that you follow them by encrypting a "follow status" only they can decrypt. I'm not suggesting this change, only making an observation.

Remove OP_RETURN altogether? What is your definition of STANDARDNESS? To remove a default? If there is "no standard" than what is the default you propose? To refuse to run unless someone intentionally configures the parameter? All that could do is establish to a de-facto standard size.
It does nothing to address using outputs to hold data, which makes the utxo set demands ever worse. The OP_RETURN is almost a necessary feature to hash-stamp an out-of-band proof to a transaction. Yes, BIP110 is insufficient to stop spam, but it will implement resistance, and knots-style filters will add more resistance.
The only remaining alternative is to move to ZK proofs and/or encrypted UTXO destination addresses, not for privacy, but to eliminate the possibility of clear-text transactions and to provide liability protection through plausible deniability to node operators.

You're arguing two separate issues. 1) open up OP_RETURN and let the fer market decide rather than let the nodes filter transactions, and 2) the vbyte discount distorts the market price. I am not addressing issue (2) because it's irrelevant to issue (1). Changing (2) does not fix (1). You're essentially parroting a variant of core's position that spam should be handled by the market price of blockchain space. That's like saying "let the bandwidth of your email server limit the amount of spam that can get into your inbox, and all you need to do is increase the amount of good emails to crowd out the bad emails.

The topic shifts on nostr from week to week in my experience. I rarely see nostr talk other than software devs talking about what they are doing. My feed is bitcoin heavy, but only about 20%. The other 80% is anarchism, sovereign living, personal commentary, philosophy/metaphysics, politics and general news. It pretty much keeps my funnel full. If you're trying to follow "important people"/normie-intellectuals, you're on nostr way too early for that, though we will take all we can get to build the network effect.

Fee markets are driven my human preference. A majority who adopts rules restricting the use of their property, and limits the definition of what money they agree to trade in, is not a government. Prices are effected by these agreed-upon rules. It is true anarchist, self-sovereign, market-driven rules that flow out of this collaborative network of nodes who represent the choice of those who transact in their concensus-money. It is not "Democrat" or "Republican" it is "state" or "non-state". I am not saying BIP110 is either state or non-state, but the infiltration by the owner-class and state covert operations into the core team does represent the will of the state, and their anti-concensus behavior reflects an exercise of power under the cover of darkness, against the will of those who depend on them to reflect their collective will. BIP110 is merely an attempt to mitigate the damage done by the state.

It is a non-trivial operation to switch from core v28/v29 to knots. I suspect the majority of the "protestant" nodes are simply lazy and/or don't have the horsepower to run two nodes during the changeover.

I use a sheet of stiff bubblewrap or a big 4x4' foam pad from packaging for lying on the concrete, or even a folded cardboard box. You don't need the roller bed.

Get ramps for oil changes, don't crawl under a car on stands. You can get them used from junk yards or Craigslist.
Get a fumoto valve to replace your oil plug, much cleaner, you can drain directly into an empty oil jug.
Cut an old gallon jug in half length wise and leave the screw cap on and hold it under the filter as you screw it off and let the filter fall into the jug.
This is how you do a spill-free oil change. A plastic oil pan is only needed to catch any drips in case something tips over or slides.

I started out doing my own oil. When I was "rollin" in it and had 4 vehicles to maintain, I would bring it into a local place and I trusted the owner. But then he hired different management, and he had jokers working there, then I notice an oil puddle in the garage so I go back to doing it myself.
I find out they overtightened the oil plug, they put the cheap filter on, they never checked the air filter after they said they did. There are only two fixes for a stripped out oil plug: A) a new oil plan, which involves lifting the engine and removing the exhaust manifold. Or B) a timesert. Option B doesent always work, but it did for me and against my better judgement the hard lesson over again: letting a dufus touch your engine costs way more than however much they charge.
