This is not using any high-level middleware. This is written against the low level WebGPU API and wgpu-rs lowers that to the various backends.

So I'm looking at what a "production" Live2D renderer would look like, and I'm torn because I think I want to use wgpu, but I need some features it doesn't support to do some things efficientlly.
To do 5.3 blend modes efficiently, I need either VK_EXT_blend_operation_advanced or VK_EXT_rasterization_order_attachment_access or [subpass self-dependency](https://developer.arm.com/community/arm-community-blogs/b/mobile-graphics-and-gaming-blog/posts/framebuffer-fetch-in-vulkan ), but WebGPU has none of those.
For efficient masking, I think it's basically going to have to be subpasses (i.e. something that lets me render a mask to an attachment, then sample it in another subpass, that stays in tile memory/cache).
(Metal has equivalents for all this too)
Another option for both is VK_EXT_fragment_shader_interlock, but that will probably suck on tilers...
How hard is it to get stuff like this added to wgpu as an extension?

So let me get this straight... rsync made a *security release* fixing a bunch of CVEs, it regressed some stuff, people looked at the commit log, saw Claude sign-offs, and started a mob on the sole maintainer?
Yeah, this stuff is what gives legitimate AI criticism a bad name.
I don't like it, you may not like it either, but when people are throwing LLMs at legacy codebases and finding CVEs by the dozen, and a sole maintainer is trying to keep the house from falling apart... if you're attacking them, you're firing at the wrong person.
You know what's a bigger cancer on this world than AI? People incapable of seeing any nuance in situations. And this applies to absolutely everything. I'm absolutely exhausted of extremist takes. From every single side and point of view, in every single debate, AI related and not.
You all seriously need to touch grass, and learn to stop being outraged all the time over every single thing in this world.

A side issue around the rigging debate is, who owns the "rights" to a model, and who has the "right" to change it?
This question isn't just a business/contract question, there is a deeply moral/ethical aspect too.
As an artist (both model artist and rigger), it is reasonable to want creative control over what you create. You created it, after all!
But, is what you created really "just" a piece of art?
As a VTuber, and *especially* as an indie VTuber, my model isn't just a costume I put on, or a prop to be used for business. It is, on a much deeper level, my identity. There is a living, breathing human behind that Live2D avatar.
I can honestly say that becoming a VTuber, and especially my first model, have shaped who I am in a really deep way. Both online, and IRL.
My models aren't something selected from a catalog, they are the result of working with multiple people to figure out *who I am*.
And that's really deep! Think about how it works IRL. You can buy clothes designed by someone, or even custom made, and then you can alter them yourself. You can mix and match. They are part of your self-expression, part of who you are.
VTuber models should be similar!
I personally believe that VTubers should have the freedom to adjust their own models, within the bounds of respect for the artist and rigger. Just like you can pin items on top, you should be allowed to change outfit colors, or "embroider" a logo or text on your shirt.

You can use them if you copy /System/Library/Components/AudioDSP.component to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ and edit the Info.plist to add the extra factory methods btw.

The "free software" crowd comes to mind, you know, the FSF purists buying 10 year old laptops because they're "100% free" while their home has hundreds of microcontrollers running proprietary firmware, in everything from dishwashers to their computer mouse to the EC in their supposedly 100% free laptop. They invent arbitrary rules like "ROM doesn't count" that actually go against the goals and spirit of their supposed moral values.
It's a farce and I can't take those people seriously, nor anyone who seriously believes "zero AI involved in my software" is a viable thing going forward.
Go support projects that don't embrace AI and stop worrying about the supply chain, because that's a lost cause and acting like it isn't is a losing battle that leads to madness.

It is a choice if you are willing to make extreme trade offs, that no existing established project the size of Rust can make and survive.
You as an individual are free to make whatever choices you choose, but I do hope those choices are at least self consistent, because 90+% of the time the people complaining about this stuff and saying they're going to do something about it are just virtue signaling and then not actually willing to make all the compromises required to maintain an internally consistent position.
To be clear, I don't like any of this AI slop stuff either, but I'm not going to switch to NetBSD because of it, and the tiny minority of people who are aren't going to make an impact on the field.

If the goal is "no AI generated code in my dependency tree", then that was a battle lost before it even began. Multiple core dependency projects are allowing AI.
Given the state of the world re AI usage, there was no way that battle was going to be won. You'd need something like "AI is ruled illegal/copyright infringing across the board in some important jurisdiction" for people to consider it toxic enough to not touch and fork each and every project whose maintenance team disagrees.
The way FOSS is interconnected, it is simply not possible to "hard partition" the dependency tree on moral concerns at scale. Pretty much the only thing that can do that is a legal code red, and it seems the lawyers have decided AI isn't one (even though many disagree).

I worked at a fairly big tech co years before the AI boom. People did large scale refractoring across huge code bases back then. With refactoring tools. And properly written robots.
Applying changes to code at scale, opening PRs automatically, basic interaction with human reviewers, making sure tests pass, getting things merged when ready. All that already existed before LLMs. And it was actually reliable and not capable of hallucinating terrible things.
It's like we've forgotten how to automate things without LLMs and openclaw now...

I'm honestly quite disappointed with /r/vtubertech. I expected better than this from the VTuber community.
I get that this is an *extremely* widespread myth, but people are getting irrationally angry at the idea that maybe Apple just has a really good face tracking model and it's not the camera.
Literally all they have to do is just... cover up the depth camera on an iPhone and see how the tracking still works practically the same, with just the front selfie cam.
But oh well, I guess I'll just write and release "VBridger for macOS except it's using the webcam" instead 😇

BTW, there is almost certainly a model size and architecture threshold here. If I train an image upscaler on copyrighted data, for example, it's quite improbable that it will be able to generate copyrighted data from an unrelated input. Most likely that is safe.
Is there a size threshold for LLMs where, for typical training data distributions, the LLM is highly unlikely to "memorize" a copyrightable information? Is that size threshold a usable LLM? These are open questions (that nobody seems to be interested in researching).
I'm willing to bet if such a size threshold exists, it's much smaller than the minimum LLM size useful for "general purpose" prompting though.

Typical ML argument: "If I can read something legally, why can't I train an LLM on it?"
Humans are capable of reading things and later writing a similar thing that is still a copyright violation. If I go and write a book that follows the plot line of Star Wars, that's still a copyright violation, even if no text is literally the same. If I play the melody to a song on my piano and release it without the appropriate mechanical cover license, that's also a copyright violation.
The reason this does not happen often is that, as humans, we are aware that that's plagiarism and there are rules.
LLMs have no such awareness and routinely output things which are blatant copyright violations when appropriately prompted. That means the model weights encode that work, and therefore, are themselves a derivative work.
Your brain encodes a massive amount of copyrighted information. You are not a walking copyright violation because humans aren't data, can't be copied and distributed en masse, have human rights, etc. This is why "mind reading machines" are a classic dystopian plot point (monetizing your thoughts etc).
An LLM is not a human, does not have human rights, nor human privileges. It is data, and if it encodes copyrighted information, that's a derivative work. If you aren't following the license of the training data, that's a copyright violation.

OK so apparently setting DNS to 0.0.0.0 means setting the upstream DNS so that works to close off DNS.
And then I can use firewall-cmd to configure container networking policies, except for some reason the firewall zone is hardcoded to "trusted" by podman so I have to use that one...???

It looks like I can use a non-internal network with no default route I guess? But then the containers can access ports on the host so I guess I need to firewall-cmd those off...
And also there's a DNS hole (the podman DNS server will still resolve external DNS names)... I have no idea how to disable that.

Podman question: PublishPort works with default networking, but not when I attach the container to an internal network.

Even Twitter does better than this. I get that with federation it's tricky to fully nuke a reply, but at least your local instance should be able to hide replies of blocked users from everyone else local and from queries for context from other instances??

Why are AI people so monumentally *bad* at copyright?
I'm looking for ethical/copyright-safe training data sets. Common Corpus sells itself as that... but then I go read the paper and they include CC BY-SA scientific papers and GPL stuff from GitHub, and then in models trained on that dataset they proudly state:
> Only trained on open data under a permissible [sic] license [...] By design, all Pleias model are unable to output copyrighted content.
Um, no?? CC BY-SA is not public domain, it's a copyright license. You can't train on CC BY-SA content and then claim your model is any more copyright-safe than whatever Google and Meta are releasing. It just means you're violating the copyright of people releasing content under open licenses only.

My bet is the plan is to turn Rosetta 2 into a Rosetta.framework that just contains the core emulator as a stand-alone framework (zero support for Intel macOS code/frameworks), and then port arm64ec Wine to macOS, substituting that framework instead of FEX-Emu.

A friend asked Gemini to do a security assessment of a recent open source macOS app (look through code, developer behavior, user forums, etc).
It spat out a 2,500 word essay painting the whole thing as a massive backdoor, talking to C&C servers, reading your chat messages, bypassing macOS security, the works. Entirely coherent on the face of it, overdone but it *could* have been real and someone not in infosec would easily buy it.
100% hallucinated. Gemini wrote an entire infosec fanfic based on nothing. Worst thing I found on the real repo was a symlink traversal bug that was quickly fixed by the dev.
This was using the "Deep Research" function in "Pro" mode on an "Ultra" account.

I never used this one because I realized they hadn't implemented the software fastpath for... I think it was 4in6 tunneling? And that would've meant no line rate 1G routing for my internet...
The ER-X is more of an L3 switch in that regard and can handle the fastpath in some kind of configurable hardware thing including the 4in6. It was my main home router for many years until I moved and upgraded to 10G ^^

No, that setting is and has always been there. It's a defaults change. You and everyone else seeing this bug are incorrectly assuming it is "applied on updates". It never was, and there never was any mechanism for it to be.
It is, and has always been, a bug. But everyone who hits it assumes it's evil packaging.

Just anyone who consistently sees this issue on upgrades sharing their profile directory would be a good start to try to diagnose it... maybe even just the prefs.js file.
Ideally you want a profile dir snapshot prior to the first run with an upgraded version, along with the version known to trigger the reset on that profile.

I just tried Firefox 119 in a Fedora 39 distrobox. Upgraded to 132, no reset. Carried over the profile to 149 on F43, no reset.
I really don't understand how some people could hit this all the time and some people never saw it...

Apparently there's a small but significant fraction of users who see their browser home reset to the Fedora home on Firefox updates or other circumstances... and they're all convinced this is some kind of evil intentional Fedora packaging feature that hijacks your preferences on every update, and that it must happen to everyone (it does not).
So far there is *one* known hypothesis for why this can happen (it involves Firefox Sync), but that doesn't cover all instances because some affected users claim not to use Sync. I reported this one upstream so hopefully there will be a solution soon. Nobody had until now...
Meanwhile, **not a single affected user has bothered to write up reliable repro steps or follow through with maintainers on tracking down the root cause**.
I've also looked at upstream bugs and found several shaped like "Firefox lost my prefs on upgrade", but none of them were followed through to a root cause either.
Of course, when Firefox loses the home page pref and it reverts to about:home, people shrug and set it back... but when Fedora Firefox does the same and it reverts to start.fedoraproject.org, it's clearly a Red Hat conspiracy to hijack people's browsers and they demand Fedora remove the default home page branding override entirely, instead of working with a developer to get the bug fixed...

It's only the kernel command line part that tries to use grubby.
I think what you're missing is `sudo dnf swap grubby sdubby`. That's the package that provides sdboot compatible grubby.

It's normal for the settings to be lost after a reboot, you need the proper package to set it up automatically (the package adds all the hooks to automatically apply everything). The settings it applies are in RAM only.
PipeWire buffer settings are a different story, that's going to be part of the guide I'm writing to go along with all this so it might help you too! ^^

After enabling it, just `sudo dnf install proaudio-setup` and rebooting should do the magic. You can run `sudo proaudio-setup check` after to verify that everything is configured properly.

asprintf() is what you want except, of course, it has this amazing line in the API contract:
> On error, -1 is returned, `errno` is set to indicate the error, and the contents of `strp` are undefined.
Why is it undefined just give me NULL or at least promise it's unchanged so I can initialize it to NULL????????
Somehow every C function dealing with strings has a footgun...

It just hit me that camera rolling shutter effects go horizontally for vertical videos. 🤯
Remember the tilted/skewed posts in videos taken from moving vehicles? You don't see those in shorts! (Unless they're crops edited in post)

I've always wondered about the video clipping stuff on the Switch... 30 seconds is 1.2GB of raw video (720p30 8bit 4:2:0) so obviously it has to encode footage into H.264 in real time all the time to be able to keep the buffer in RAM to save a clip. I wonder how much battery that uses? I bet runtime would be perceivably better if you could turn it off...

Japan doesn't recognize same sex marriages at the national level (yet), though there are ongoing changes and exceptions and legal rulings on this issue, so depending on what you're trying to do and the specifics there are various workarounds for some of it.
Worth mentioning that Japan doesn't have "joint filing" for married couples, so we're mostly talking about spouse deductions and things like that, you're still filing separately either way. To give an example of the complexity, I believe that a dependent non-legally-recognized same sex spouse can be registered as part of the same "household" for resident registration purposes (this implies shared living expenses), and then the head of household could claim the dependent's medical expenses on their tax return.
So basically "it's complicated, talking to a lawyer/accountant recommended" ^^;;

Technically if I did more rigurous accounting I could get a tax break for that itself. So they do reward/incentivize people who take it more seriously (double entry bookkeeping, using proper software, etc.). But it's not required.

Yeah it's mostly, splitting Amazon accounts and all that is a pain. We should try honestly, but we need to come up with some kind of system that we stick to. If we don't then you end up having to audit the totals again.
The joys of being self employed ^^;;
But then again, the whole thing took about a day of work total, which isn't the worst. It helps that you don't need to fear you're going to get hit with a huge fine for a small mistake and all that (besides, they go both ways, so you bet if the tax office decided to try to go after me I'd go over my past returns and fix everything I messed up in their favor within the corrections deadline... in the end nobody wins unless you're actually trying to cheat)

The most annoying part for me is going through all my expenses to add up what needs to be deducted as a business expense and what doesn't (because I'm too lazy to use a separate card/account... ^^;;).
That, and holding currency in non JPY is a pain. I had to play weird spreadsheet games with an export of my PayPal / Kofi income (which is a USD account) to make sure it was all done "by the book", took a while to even confirm the correct algorithm.
I think many people don't bother though, a lot of it is on the honor system. If you did your best and aren't cheating on purpose you're usually OK. The extra work I did for the USD thing ended up being a tiny difference on the total in the end.

Nah it's self reported. If you are just a salaried employee you don't have to file anything. It's only if you have extra income, and then for the most part they just trust whatever you say unless they have reason to audit you.
