"doubled the level of expertise required to do meaningful work on it" I think this is a bit of an overstatement? The programming language isn't all you need to know to *meaningfully* contribute to a project. And I think this is especially true of complex infrastructure tools like transpilers and other deep tools.

Having done some experients myself, it seems that it's really important to consider what your data is. I had a lot of large numeric arrays, and they encoded way faster with msgpack and cbor compared to builtin JSON. A binary encoding being fast with lots of binary data seems to make sense. But I may also have cheated by refactoring to use TypedArray varieties for those, which JSON can't do. It's long enough ago I don't remember all the comparisons I did.
