Somebody on here was in Barcelona recently, about to visit Sagrada Familia, and I said "that building made me cry the instant I stepped through the door".
It just did it again, looking at this picture. I'm not sure if it's something in the architecture, the colours or what, but it just gets me right in the feels.

Had a conversation - or perhaps I should say *the* conversation, the one that every translator is absolutely bloody sick of - the other day, and just remembered that I forgot one of the key things that AI gets wrong in translations.
Because as well as being unable to do consistency, changing names, producing flat, predictable (!) prose, being built on stolen human work and burning through the planet's resources, it can't do gender. It will far too often assume people are male, even if they've been mentioned in the previous sentence with a female name.
Is that "good enough" for you? Because it isn't for me.

I am absolutely fucking SICK of all the unpaid work required to simply exist in the techno-hell that is 2026. I've just spent half an hour trying to take a photograph of my passport that Wise.com will accept – to no avail. They now want me to do something involving live photographs of myself and my passport using my smartphone. JUST FUCK OFF.
Let's just let the money launderers do whatever they want, eh? Let the mysterious people who might want to pay my bills do so. Let the people who want to login to my IKEA account to use my 173 points do that too.
I reckon I'd save about a day a week if I didn't have to do this shit any more. And given that billionaires are screwing over society far more comprehensively than any "organised crime", I just don't give a shit. Let them take it. Let them all take all of it.

I mean, yes, but also why should people start making those difficult choices and admitting that it's them when unnecessary AI data centres are being planned (possibly not built, according to Ed Zitron) that will make our previous massive impact on the planet pale by comparison? It's difficult to feel like you should make the harder choice on an individual level when massive corporations and billionaires are trashing everything. How can we stop that? (Not a rhetorical question, it's one I think about every day.)

And this was the problem with the UK's membership - right from the very start the mainstream media treated Europe as a separate thing, not as something the UK was a member of. It was always "Europe says this" and "Europe does that", not "As Europeans we say this". You could see that when Brexit happened and groups like farmers and fishers who had voted Leave were suddenly astonished that they no longer got European funding. Because they'd never been European in their heads.

So let me get this straight. Companies having replaced their human customer support staff with an AI chatbot (an insult to both their customers and employees in so many ways) can be forced to pay massively over the odds for said AI by people asking it to do things like "reverse a linked list in Python"?
I wonder what other examples could be used to do such a thing? Just so I can avoid doing it, obviously.

Warning to anyone else with a #Swedbank account - my e-faktura payments this month haven't all been added automatically, and in some cases (E.ON!!!) the payee has disappeared completely. Needless to say, Swedbank haven't a clue about why and can't help fix it. But check your payments, otherwise you'll find you haven't paid half your bills.

You can't. Even if you age check everyone using an online service, you still can't stop under-16s from using it. But you *can* gather lots of nice data from those older than 16, which you can then sell/leak, and which can then be used (as is happening in the US now) to target people the regime doesn't like.
None of this is about protecting the children, it's just an excuse that few people will argue against.
(Not saying I think social media is good for kids, it's not - it's bloody horrible for everyone, by and large.)

I live in a small town in Sweden. This morning I went out to my car (realising that I'd once again forgotten to lock the front door last night), drove along empty, wide roads to the nearest largeish town and parked in the brand new multistorey carpark by the railway station, where the first two hours' parking is free and the remainder of the time is very cheap.
I got out of the car without checking my surroundings, and as I leaned back in to get my bag out, I thought "In large parts of the world, I'd be asking to get mugged, or worse".
Then I walked along the clean, well-kept streets to the hospital, where I waited for less than 2 minutes for my mammography, which was completely free of charge.
This is Sweden. This is Europe. Why the FUCK are we trying to emulate, listening to, investing in or in any way having anything whatsoever to do with the utter insanity coming out of the USA?
And I don't just mean under the current, obviously barking, incumbent. I mean ever? They don't do things like we do. They don't believe in the same things that we do. This really is an us and a them situation, and we've been kidding ourselves for the last 80 years that they're like us.

I'm really loving how Mastodon has become a refuge for all the grizzled seafarers on the ocean of the internet. They pop up in my feed and their bios all say something like
