Proof of work. It is the work for which you receive the fees when finding/mining a block. You did the work, you deserve the money.
If on the other hand you choose to keep a copy of the blockchain on a node, you did nothing different than any other copier of the blockchain regardless of its content. You're also not compensated by transaction fees for choosing to have a node.
It is needed to have everyone in the network active because verification is also important. But when you choose to keep a cheap node, for the mission of decentralization and mainly your own privacy when transacting, don't complain it costs you your lunch money. Nobody expects you to do or own anything and the world aint fair.
In the early days it used to be just one piece of software, wallet&miner&node in one. Now we have the option to choose what we do and who choose to be in the network.
Now if you want to make money you do have to put in the work too.
And on the other hand if you want to transact or fill a block with other data, you should pay. And that already happens. Spamming is cheap because there are not a lot of transactions. No one is fighting for space.
If one day transactions increase again per block, prices increase for spam and transactions which reduces spam and makes people think again about dumb on-chain purchases.
As a miner myself, I like the blocks to be full and people to be fighting for space. It's all spam to me. Realising ofcourse that "the cure for high prices are high prices" and it won't last forever until one form of demand destruction has been realized again and prices drop to fair value again. Right now the hardcore miners are going through a rough couple of years to stay mining and secure the network.
I personally would like to see the fees increase with MORE use of the blockchain and/or the hashrate to reduce a bit. Hashrate is reducing now lately because it's very tough to stay a miner, because for many it is no longer profitable...

I don't know why people want what they want. Personally I don't need to agree with what people want or stand in their way of doing what they want. However, (in)actions do have consequences. Always.
What people do with the freedom they have is between them and their god to be judged upon their actions. I may have an opinion, but I won't choose to stand in the way of people's freedom based on the assumption they will misuse that freedom because they have the chance to choose to do wrong things.
The concusion that I therefore want bad things is just narrowminded, but also understandably typical of the times we live in with people being set up against each other.

Illegal is what gov determines to put into law against you for their own benefit. Bitcoin itself was deemed illegal in many countries because you know "criminals (could) use it" and other dumb justifications. If gov need a reason to take stuff from you it will find or create one (and kick out your tail light)
But thanks for your explanation. It holds a lot of assumptions though. Luckily bitcoin is a world wide network which saved the network before from governments trying to choke(point 2.0) its functioning and use. And failed.
Your explanation could be directly applied to Nostr as well, wich would make it already "illegal" to have on your phone/computer because of the content other people choose to share at any moment. Now try to stop Nostr because of that. Now try to stop bitcoin by making your node illegal. Your node could already be illegal because now your government deems you to be part of a money transmitter system...
Don't be scared, be a rebel, run a node or two or three, it is not expensive. Nor is the storage. If you still think it is, share a node!
Some people find adding data onto the chain useful. Not all people adding data have bad intentions. Maybe some data might even be a considered useful additional data to be kept on the sacred bitcoin timechain.
If you choose to not see it, doesn't mean it's not there. If you block it, it just means you don't have a full copy of the blockchain.
I do understand your worries though. I just don't respond to created fear the same way.
We'll see how many people get motivated through peer pressure to filter all data from their copy of the chain, if that works at all.

Every transaction that isn't your transaction could be considered "spam" too from a personally useless datastorage point of view.
Yes, I accept your (freedom to) add data to your transaction. I also accept the fee you pay for your transaction.
But maybe you could explain how the issue is truly an issue, other than how much lunch money you spent on a decent size ssd to just run a node.
I could be way wrong not understanding the real problem. There are just so many people just repeating opinions thinking they belong to a certain group and need to virtue signal to their group... Copy/pasting issues is how they show they are in the same group...

There is a visible protected class of professional liars that is paid to come up with a story as if they are in control. This is America's front-office of salesmen to sell stories to all plebs. These people are in a job where they are only accountable to the ones paying them the most, the back-office, not to the public. Those front-office people are all politicians (incl. a president) we see and know.

Well, they sure act like one!
They will retroactively freeze your account if they suspect they don't like what you do with the bitcoin you just purchased from them. This means your bitcoin is being tracked after purchase BY STRIKE. And then the questions start arriving from "the strike team". Not explaining what is the issue, but claiming that due to proof of funds and other regulations you now need to put your pants down because we took your Strike account money hostage!
Here is what is going on:
For years I made it a practice to 1) earn fiat money doing honest work. 2) exchange fiat money for bitcoin 3) send it to a wasabi wallet 4) coinjoin for online privacy and security reasons so evil people won't be able to follow my stack of coins 5) send it to cold storage for me in the future or my future children.
Ofcourse I know what is going on. I made a coinjoin and therefore I am considered a possible criminal. "Pre-crime" flag this guy and freeze his account.
Now "the strike team" wants to know where the bitcoin money went. So I provided them the proof I received the bitcoin in my wasabi wallet. History and transaction ID, amount etc... Not good enough! The follow up question is: "Can you please confirm where you are sending the funds from your Wasabi wallet?"
Well, at this stage I am in a pickle... Do I provide proof and undo the whole purpose of a coinjoin? Because you know, they took my Strike account fiat money hostage to ensure they shall get the answer they are looking for! Put a little fear into people always works. Similar to customs agents at an airport....
But then I think: "What the actual FUCK! This is MY MONEY!"
What would you do @nprofile…8sjr as a true bitcoiner with experience?
And how can you explain away this is still about "proof of funds"?

Science means Bribes in this context.
There were enough bribes to claim something untested was safe and effective for everyone at every age to use, no informed consent required, and you're publicly smeared in every way if you don't use it.
That clearly went against the Nuremberg Code.
And I think, when you look through that lens, that inoculating a baby or kid that is unable to give informed consent, should ethically not be inoculated.
Also, if you don't know (ALL) the downsides of what could maybe be positive, you're not informed enough to make an informed decision on behalf of another person or for yourself.
Still, we can inform ourselves and combined with some common sense choose to ignore what a corrupt system thinks people they have never met should do.

Ozempic is just a repetition of what "worked" during the Covaids Scamdemic. Claim that obesity is a disease, have that narative spread through ads and (paid) talk shows, have obese people feel like victims and treat them that way, and present the long awaited "solution" having you addicted for life (because one can't just stop) and create side effects like ozempic face...
Not such a party drug after all like e.g. Speed, but def a similar time full of propaganda and war where these kind of drugs get introduced and government allowing the obvious malpractice and scam to take place.
Because, government was also behind sponsoring the bad ingredients to make food cheap and thus the inflation they create less obvious.
Hopefully I won't be asked to take ozempic so my neighbor won't get fat 🤡🌎

We're running out of letters to describe things, or we could just use letters to form words and then create sentences. Much better to discuss stuff. Especially to point out that lazy people want obesity to become a religion so what they believe is true must be true so you can stay lazy, and big pharma wants it to be a disease so they can sell crippling drugs to lazy people. Lazy also means not reading up on eating healthy food.
