🇨🇩 Goma: Without Banks, Accessing Your Own Money Has Become a Daily Struggle
In Goma and Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, accessing personal savings has become a serious challenge. Since banks closed in January 2025 amid ongoing insecurity, thousands of residents have struggled to withdraw money and carry out normal financial transactions.
In cities where mobile money has become essential for everyday payments, cash withdrawals are often expensive and complicated. Many residents complain about high transaction fees, sometimes increased by extra charges imposed by agents in exchange for cash access.
“When I receive money through Airtel Money, I have to pay withdrawal fees. But sometimes agents also ask for extra money just to give me cash. In the end, we pay twice just to access our own money,” says a resident in Goma.
The liquidity crisis is also affecting traders and mobile money agents, who are often unable to meet customer demand. Some agents say they must travel long distances, sometimes as far as Beni, to find cash despite growing security risks.
A civil society actor in Goma warns about the economic consequences:
“Since the closure of banks, many families have struggled to access their savings. This situation increases dependence on mobile money while placing additional financial pressure on already vulnerable communities.”
As traditional banking systems remain unavailable, some young people are beginning to turn to the Bitcoin as an alternative way to store value without relying on banks or cash, although access remains limited.
