I saw the initial note earlier and didn’t like it because of its absolutisms, but since you tagged me….
The amount of pedos is probably nonexistent, negligible, whatever, easy Strawman. Now, there are absolutely *plenty* of scammers, liars, and bad actors. Technicals are important, but incentives trump them. The base layer is made of people who have vested financial interests in spam. Up from there are people who want to maintain their social connections, for status and some money. Up from there are plebs who believe the lies from the first two groups. It’s important to identify and root out the first two groups. They’re not on team Bitcoin.
The bulk of people on both sides are just plebs acting genuinely. There are also devs who earnestly believe in the alternative technical solutions like opreturn. I’m still partial to their view because I believe some of them are genuine. I’m still open to the possibility that they’re correct, it’s just that there’s a far greater density of genuine people on one side.
Scammers, liars, and bad actors are not on our same team. Many of them want to turn Bitcoin into Ethereum. Shitcoiners are not on team Bitcoin.

A Steelman is that SegWit enabled lightning, which moved some (unknowable amount) of monetary activity off chain. So without SegWit, (or some other way of doing an L2 without new features from a soft fork) some of that activity would have been recorded on chain. Then again, that monetary activity would’ve helped to price out spam (so I’m told) that may have existed irrespective of the help from SegWit and taproot.
But they were still both extremely hasty, onchain activity is dead and Bitcoin is only worth ~0.12% of total global wealth. Even if there was a movement to activate them now, it’d still be too hasty.

Even though I’ve been running Knots and BIP110 for months, I still expect it to fail because 15% of nodes is probably not high enough. I also don’t necessarily think its failure means miners automatically have control. It might simply mean that the node % wasn’t high enough. Ex. Unless I’m missing something obvious, if miners want to cancel the next halving, add tail emissions, etc, then we can expect 99%+ of nodes to reject that.
What if 10% of nodes wanted a UASF? 5%? 1%? What’s the threshold where if it’s rejected, then miners have proven control? It’s subjective and hard to say. You could compare it to BIP148, also around 15%, but two UASF scenarios will never be same.

After doing some research, here’s what I found. (All open to correction if there are errors)
The upper bound for outputs per block is ~32k using P2WPKH batching. Which equates to 4.6M UTXOs per day, 138M month, 1.68B year. Using 120bytes per UTXO, that’s 16-18GB/month and 200-230GB/yr. Legacy P2PKH and taproot are somewhat less, but still 200GB and 150GB / year. Current UTXO set size is 12-13GB.
Annual cost depends on fee rate. At 100 sat/vB, it’s 52,560BTC. At 500 sat/vB, it’s 262,800BTC. Or $10.5B and $52.6B at $200k/BTC.
