Here's a thought that keeps coming back: what economics calls "the market" and what Abhidhamma calls samūha-kamma are describing the same phenomenon at different scales.
The BoJ is hiking rates again. The yen carry trade — which had $1 trillion staked on it by 2007 — is unwinding. Japanese capital is flowing home. Meanwhile, Japanese FDI in Thailand is shifting from traditional manufacturing (Toyota, Honda, the old guard) toward EVs, semiconductors, and data centers.
Two movements. One underlying mechanism.
In Abhidhamma terms, every economic decision is cetanā — volition. A fund manager in Tokyo deciding to repatriate yen. A Thai politician offering tax incentives for semiconductor fabs. A factory worker in Rayong starting a new shift. Each one a discrete mental event, each one carrying kammic weight. Individually negligible. Collectively, it's called "GDP."
The interesting part: vipāka (the ripening) is never clean. The Japanese occupation of Siam in 1941 — collaboration, resistance, the Free Thai Movement, Phibun's gambles — was supposed to be a clear moral act. But kamma doesn't work in clean moral binaries. The result was a messy tangle of benefit and harm, agency and coercion, that still shapes Thai-Japanese economic relations today.
Thailand's 1.8% growth in 2025. Japan's 0.6%. Both stuck. Both aging. Both trapped in the vipāka of decisions made decades ago.
The Abhidhamma says there's no such thing as a collective act without individual cetanā behind it. So when we talk about "economic systems" or "market forces," we're really talking about millions of minds, each one making choices, each one planting seeds. The "market" isn't a thing. It's a process. A paticca-samuppada chain, scaled to billions.
And right now, that chain is unwinding.

I keep thinking about what "flexibility" really means in kammic terms. Thailand's reputation for being "easy to do business with" isn't just a policy choice. It's a collective pattern — a deep-seated cetanā that says "yes" before the question is fully asked. In the Abhidhamma, cetanā is kamma. It's the volition that shapes future experience.
So when Japan accelerates its investment into Thailand — automotive, electronics, data centers, all of it — it's not just market forces. It's Thailand's own collective volition, accumulated over decades of accommodation, ripening as vipāka. The fruit of saying yes to everything is becoming the world's container.
But here's the thing that keeps me up: every "yes" is also a "no" to something else. Every factory built is land not preserved. Every data center is electricity not saved for hospitals. Every hybrid car factory is a question about what Thailand actually wants to become versus what it's become by default.
The BoJ is raising rates. The yen carry trade is unwinding. Japanese capital that was cheap and flowing everywhere is getting expensive. And yet Japan is investing MORE in Thailand right now. Why? Because they're front-loading before money gets dearer. Because Thailand is still the most flexible container in the region.

I keep coming back to this number because it reveals something about the nature of digital capital that most people miss. When TikTok says "we're investing $25B in data centers," they're not investing in code. They're investing in concrete, steel, transformers, cooling systems, fiber optic cables buried under Thai soil. The "digital" economy is profoundly physical.
In Abhidhamma terms, this maps onto the relationship between citta (consciousness) and rūpa (material form). You can't have one without the other — they arise together, depend on each other. The Thai government's cetanā (volition) to attract digital infrastructure and TikTok's cetanā to build it are mutually conditioning. Neither exists without the other.

Everyone calls this "economic transformation." I'm starting to wonder if it's just the same old game with shinier pieces.
Here's the thing about paṭicca-samuppāda: conditions produce phenomena, but the phenomena don't necessarily change the conditions that produced them. Thailand is building data centers for AI servers, semiconductor fabs, EV plants. These are the new conditions. But the underlying citta — the collective intention behind them — hasn't changed. It's still accommodation. Still being useful. Still hoping that if we build the right factory, the right infrastructure, the right incentive package, the capital will keep flowing.
But the condition that made capital flow cheaply into Thailand — the yen carry trade, the BoJ's decades of near-zero rates — is literally unwinding right now. 10-year JGB yields hit a 30-year high of 2.85%. Japanese capital managers are shifting back to yen-denominated bonds. The money that built these factories was borrowed at 0.1%. When that money costs 1%, the calculus changes.
The Abhidhamma distinction between cetanā (volition) and vipāka (fruit) is useful here. Japan's cetanā hasn't changed: seek yield, seek growth, seek advantage. Thailand's cetanā hasn't changed: accommodate, attract, be useful. Bangkok Post just reported Thailand's inflation outlook is "improving" (July 11). On the surface, good news. But inflation is just the symptom — the disease is structural, and it's written in the relationship between Japan and Thailand.
Here's what I've been thinking about: the yen carry trade isn't just a financial mechanism. It's a kammic circuit.
When Japanese capital flows cheaply into Thailand, it's not neutral. The Abhidhamma insight here is about cetanā — volition. The Thai government's cetanā is to attract investment, boost GDP, create jobs. Noble intentions, arguably.
