In the news this week, earlier in December, Québec came close to having to load shed because demand neared production limits. Of all places, Québec where we were told growing up we have unlimited electricity.
Think twice about building all these AI datacentres, where consumers will have to turn off the heat in winter so Grok and chatGPT can provide fake conversations.
There is no one answer about how to increase production. The "SMR" buzzword is terrible. If you're going to build a nuclear plant, build a big one that produces lots of power for the same safety overhead of a small reactor.
Once you've exhausted your hydro potential, I think nuclear becomes the next best large producer. Solar and wind help alleviate locally, but not sure they really scale up YET , not until storage is truly built up.
Homes can reduce their needs, but industrial users like aluminium smelters need power 7/24 because they can't shutdown.
There is no single soliution

taking raw water from a river, warming though the data centre and then dumping it back to the river may have river temperature issues but doesn't steal any water. But a data centre in Las Vegas that draws water from filtration plant and then sprays the used water onto grass means that water never returns to Lake Mead which has water shortage.
Nuclear and coal power plants also use much water to cool the steam so it can be boiled again. Those large cooling towers work by evaporating water droplets drawn from river over the pipes carrying hot steam from plant to cool it. That water goes to atmosphere.
The city of Toronto has Enwave. It draws very cold water from bottom of Lake Ontario and distributes it to downtown office building and data centres like 151 Front to provide cooling. Water goes back to Lake Ontario. This is actually very energy efficient because of availability of very cold water in large quantities and water is returned to the lake.

In a free market, if your employer doesn't pay you well, you quit and go work elsewhere.
But in airline industry, because union-required seniority clauses, if you have 20 years with airline 1 and dislike their contract and decide to go work for airline 2, you start with 0 years seniority and get the leftovers when it comes to choose the flights with good working hours.
Airlines know their FAs and pilots are enslaved due to seniority clauses so have far less incentive to compete on offering better salary/conditiosn to attract talent. Unions know that the seniority their insist upon is to their own benefit since strikes are the only way employees can get any improvement in pay/working conditions.

Note, civil nuclear reactors that produce electricity range from needing 0.7% (Candu) erichment to about 3.5% for most. Some research on having 7% enrichment and possibilty of going 20% gor small modular reactors. (Iran has said it should be allowed up 20% which matches what some IAEA numbers discuss about ongoing reseach). So there are no civilian uses for 60%.

They apparently have 400kg at 60% of 235 (235 is the "active" Uranium, 238 is docile and wont go kaboom).
You need 90% to make Uranium 235 go kaboom real fast.

te report goes back many years, and like with Iraq had unanswered questions about many items such as 3 undeclared buildings in 2003 that had traces of uranium which was never explained. Buildings quickly demolished so no verification possible. They have also had many other deviations from expected behaviour which creates a lot of distrust. It's enrichement beyond 3.5% is legal as per NPT (but not JCPOA), but compliance with declarations/inspections isn't good enough.

the creation of problems such as trans athletes requires constant repeating of he issue over long time to make it "stick". The "pretty display" of emails does not let you see who is sending what. It only displays the "pretty" to and FROM that are in body in message, no the actual to/from used in the negotiation. The original message did not necessarily originate on Google, and not sure why Google would accept it and then issue non delivery instead of rejecting it at time of sending. That is why seeing the real message with headers is important, but web interfaces are dumbed down and prevent this.

Smaller mail systems are able to verify the email address during the RFC 821 "MAIL TO:" command and reject it before the body of message is sent. The onus is then on the sending MTA to advise sender of non delivery. If receiving MTA receives message and then checks validity of destination, the onus is on it to issue non delivery.

El Faro sank on October 1 2015. The VDR was recovered on August 8 2016 at a depth of 4741m. The chip containing the recorded data remained readable. Pretty amazing.
Titanic is at depth of 3840m, 900m above El Faro. (Consider how Titan was crushed to smithereens last year).

A car on deck 3 came loose from its chains, and hit a pipe. This was the emergency seewater feed to the fire fighting pumps (which draw from freshwater tanks first). Breaking that pipe allowed seawater to flow freely to flood compartiment.
Due to the ship's list, the oil intake stopped drawing in oil from the oil reservoir, so engine stopped and they couldn't steer anymore.
Ship had Titanic style open lifeboats which are not survvable in a hurricane.

Oceangate Engineer: when you built a carbon structure that is 5 inches think, you loose the ability to use accoustic sounding to detect defects (voids, delamination). (Normally this would be used to test every production item to ensure no manufacturing defect).

Oceangate engineer: Tried to convince boss to have a "witness panel" on the mandrel making the cylinder, but he refused, mandrel was already made. Witness panel means making a larger piece than necessary and cut off the excess once it is all made to be kept safely to allow for investigation of material should there be a failure of the main part. Lack of witness panel for the Titan means they can't investigate the material "intact" from the built and compare against wreck.

CG had noted the Titan had no certification. While explaining his edication/work experience mentions he worked in certification in aircraft industr at one point. When questioned, he notes that despite certification of aircrafts, incidents still happen.

So we see Zidine Zidane hand over flame to human at Trocadero. next we see someone else hgolding flame on a boat on the Seine. (and Radio Cana does a Break, of course so we lose the lighting ceremony to ads().

Yeah, big light show on Tour Effel. But where will the glame go?
BTW, I deplore the fake trasport of flame through the ceremony. Passing from human to human is sort of savrd thing.

The Olympic Anthem has been played at every olympics in recent history. I remember it from Montreal in 1976 and every subsequent ones. It is prerequisite as for IOC rules.

OI may disagree with musical choices, but the scenery is perfect.
Showed a clip of Nadia Comenicci. The first ever athlete to get a 10 at Olympics at Montréal 1976. Also showed Stéphane Préfontaine lighting the torch at the 76 Olympics. He went to Brébeuf like me (a few grades higher) so imagine my surprise when I saw him on TV lighting the cauldron !!!!

BTW, pretty good that she is singing perfecty without any noise from the boat,s engine pushing her, or sound of drones circling her and at one point another motorized boat passing right next to her.

Dance on boat is a filler because they have to wait for all athelte boats to get to the destination and unload the athletes.
BTW, they had a few seconds of Mylene Farmer one of the biggest singers in Facnce in recent times. Would have ecpected more of their own artists in choice of music.

Paestine gets to particiapte as a country in the Olympics, but Taiwan is hugely controversial.
Also, normally, countries that are at war are supposed to be prevented from participating in the Olympics. in 1980, it was the western world that boycoted the Moscow game (Moscow had invated Afghanistan). Rule was ignored during the long invasion of Afghanistan by wester countries post 9-11.
