I was a fan of Google Stadia when it first launched. The ability to play triple-A games on any screen anywhere was liberating. I remember having an uh-oh realization though when I considered if Google can do it with games, its only a matter of time until Adobe does it with their design apps, and Microsoft does it with a whole OS, and pretty soon everyone is just renting services from a dumb access terminal with zero local compute. We seem to be inching closer to that reality.

Really interesting. I'm quite the opposite. I like lots of repetition as long as theres a multitude of layers. Like in good dance and house music. My mind effectively zooms in and out (auditorily speaking) to different instruments or beats, hangs out there for a bit, then focuses in on a different component. As long as tracks are complex enough, it feels like I'm remixing music in my head on the fly by selectively isolating and combining different elements.

Just read the full text of this WA State bill, and it's extremely ill-conceived.
The proposed "algorithm" compares slicer code to a database of known gun files. They're setting up a cat & mouse game where people just need to make new designs to get around the algo.
If enforced, the easiest way for manufacturers to comply will be to lock the printer to a proprietary slicer, and will criminalize community firmware, open source slicers, and print servers like OctoPrint.

Redmond turns off #FlockSafety cameras after ICE arrests
"For now, all Redmond police officers’ access to the city’s Flock data has been turned off. Two Police Department employees can access the data, but only to fulfill public records requests, and two police administrators can access — but not search — the data. A “disconnect signal” was also sent Tuesday morning to all of the cameras, which will stop them from taking and storing photos"

Same model, yes. But you don't have to use OpenAI's paid online service. The model is available on their GitHub under an MIT License: https://github.com/openai/whisper/tree/main. I use an app called MacWhisper that gives me a GUI and helps with model management, and gives easy access to other similar open-source & local audio-to-text models as well. https://goodsnooze.gumroad.com/l/macwhisper

There is growing collection of LLM and other AI models that are open source and free to use locally, so they're not all $$$ extractive appropriated commons. I use Whisper for example to create video subtitles. It's better than older text transcription tools as it can identify speakers, recognize song titles and artists, and makes note of sound fx. This all makes for a richer closed captioning.

Beginning to think my apple trees aren't "giving trees" in the Shel Silverstein sense. More like "guilt trees" in that, if even a single one of these 10,000 viable apples goes to waste, I'm going to feel bad about it.

I'm not sure how this has never bitten me in the past, but today I learned that 2×4 lumber comes in both 96″ and 92 ⅝″. I just always assumed it was all a true 8 foot, until I'm measuring out my cuts and keep coming up three inches short.

Right now, each journal entry is an actor-sprite, activated and positioned by a bunch of variables. I'm severely limited by the GameBoy's tile limits. Each journal entry can only be 20 8px x 16px sprite tiles, with a max of 10 sprite tiles displayed on any horizontal row. I might have to switch to an in-memory background tile-swapping system to fill more of the journal page area, but thats going to require a bunch of custom code that I'm not sure I'm ready for.

Spent some time the past few nights knocking out a proof-of-concept for a detective style game for the GameBoy. The idea is that you interview people and look for clues, and each item gets added to an investigator's journal.
The tricky bit was to control the sequence items were added to the journal. Took a while to figure out a system to make that work but now you can find clues in any order, and they fill up the journal starting on page 1.
