⚡🚨 NEW - One of the world's largest Certificate Authorities, DigiCert, was compromised by a malicious screensaver file sent through a customer support chat. Their antivirus blocked the malware four times. The agent kept clicking. The fifth try got through.
27 code signing certificates were stolen and used to sign malware.
DigiCert ultimately revoked 60 certificates.
Per DigiCert's incident report, filed in Mozilla's CA compliance tracker as Bug 2033170, here is how it unfolded:
April 2: an attacker contacted a DigiCert helpdesk agent through the company's customer support chat channel, posing as a customer. The lure was a zip file pitched as a screenshot. Inside the zip was a .scr file. On Windows, .scr files are executables, and this one carried a malicious payload.
Opening a file a customer sent through the official support channel is what an agent is supposed to do. Support staff are the one role designed to accept files from strangers.
DigiCert's endpoint security blocked four infection attempts. On the fifth, the support analyst's machine was infected.
DigiCert detected the infection, ran an investigation, and concluded the incident was contained.
Eleven days later, an external researcher tipped DigiCert off about misuse of DigiCert-issued code signing certificates in the wild. That tip led to the discovery of a second compromised machine, belonging to a different support analyst, infected through the same vector. The EDR on that machine had not been functioning correctly, so the original investigation missed it.
The second machine gave the attacker access to DigiCert's internal support portal. That portal lets support staff reach limited views of customer accounts, including initialization codes for ordered but not-yet-issued code signing certificates. Combining a stolen initialization code with an approved order let the attacker pull a real, validly issued code signing certificate. They did this 27 times.
DigiCert's own list of what went wrong:
- File-type filtering on the customer support chat channel did not catch the .scr
- EDR coverage was inconsistent and incomplete, creating a blind spot
- Initialization codes for code signing certificates were not adequately protected

A visual analysis layer runs alongside it. AI scans photos and videos for visual cues to estimate the user's age.
Meta insists this is not facial recognition. According to the company, the AI looks at general traits and visual indicators (like height or bone structure) to estimate age, without identifying the individual in the image. ⚡🚨 NEW RESEARCH - Fiber-optic cables can be turned into a hidden microphone and used for eavesdropping.
Researchers from Hong Kong's PolyU and CUHK just proved it works in real conditions. The paper was presented at NDSS 2026, one of the top cybersecurity conferences in the world.
When someone talks in a room, the sound waves cause tiny vibrations in everything around them, including the thin glass fiber that runs into your apartment from your internet provider. Those vibrations slightly disturb the laser light traveling through the cable. If an attacker plugs the other end of that cable into a special device called a Distributed Acoustic Sensing system, they can read those tiny disturbances and turn them back into recognizable speech.
The problem for the attacker: a normal fiber lying along your baseboard is not sensitive enough on its own. Sound fades too fast in the air, and the fiber is too thin to pick it up.
So the researchers built a small device they call a "Sensory Receptor." It is basically a 65mm plastic cylinder with about 15 meters of fiber wound around it. The cylinder catches and amplifies sound waves enough for the fiber to register them. Crucially, it is small enough to hide inside the same little plastic junction box your internet installer leaves on the wall to manage extra cable.
What the attack can actually pick up:
🔴 Daily activities (typing, walking, snoring, washing dishes): 83% recognition accuracy
🔴 Where in the room a sound is coming from: accurate to within about one meter
🔴 Spoken words at meters from the receptor
🔴 In a real office test, with the receptor hidden in a fiber box and the attacker 50+ meters away in another room, around 80% of the conversation was recoverable
Why this attack is different from a hidden microphone:
🔴 No electricity, no batteries, no radio signals
🔴 Cannot be found by professional bug sweeps that look for hidden mics or cameras
🔴 Cannot be jammed by ultrasonic jammers (the kind some boardrooms use against phone microphones)
🔴 Looks identical to a normal fiber cable
The researchers tested a commercial ultrasonic jammer right next to their device and it had zero effect. The defenses meant to protect sensitive meetings simply do not see this attack coming.
What you can do:
🔴 If you run a sensitive office or meeting room, ask your IT team about polished fiber connectors and optical isolators. Both make this attack much harder.
🔴 Do not let your internet installer leave excess fiber coiled up inside the room. Have them coil it inside the wall or in a sealed box outside the room.
🔴 Keep fiber cable runs away from desks and walls that resonate with conversation.

⚡️🚨🇺🇸 ALERT - Utah is about to become the first US state to legally target VPN use as part of online age verification. The law goes into effect Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
🔴 If you are physically located in Utah, you count as a Utah user, regardless of whether you use a VPN, proxy, or any other tool to disguise your location. Websites are now legally responsible for age-verifying you anyway.
🔴 Sites that handle "material harmful to minors" are banned from sharing instructions on how to use a VPN, or from offering any means to bypass geofencing.
The EFF calls this a "liability trap." Websites cannot reliably tell where a VPN user actually is, so the safest legal move is either to block every known VPN IP outright, or to force ID-based age verification on every visitor worldwide. Either path subjects millions of users to invasive identity checks, regardless of where they actually live.
The Cato Institute put it bluntly. When a policy can be defeated by a privacy tool millions of people legitimately use, the policy is the problem.
The collateral damage is, as always, the people who actually need VPNs:
🔴 Journalists protecting sources
🔴 Domestic abuse survivors hiding from stalkers
🔴 Activists in hostile environments
🔴 Remote workers tunneling into corporate networks
🔴 Travelers banking from abroad
🔴 Anyone who simply does not want their ISP, employer, or data brokers reading their traffic
This is not staying in Utah. The UK's Children's Commissioner has called VPNs a "loophole that needs closing." France's Minister Delegate for AI and Digital Affairs has named VPNs as "the next topic on my list."
The EU is rolling out age verification across all 27 member states by end of 2026, with EVP Henna Virkkunen openly admitting they have no plan for VPN bypass yet.
Utah is leading by example.
