Because sometimes keeping everything becomes its own kind of attachment.
Nearly four years of posts had become an archive I no longer wanted to carry. Some of it mattered. Some of it was irrelevant. Some of it I’ll probably wish I’d kept. But sorting through tens of thousands of posts one by one would defeat the point.
So I’m treating it like a sand mandala: create it, honor it, then let it go.
A kind of purification by fire. Clear away what no longer serves, make space, and allow something new to be born.

Using some browser JavaScript to auto-scroll makes selecting tens of thousands of notes for bulk deletion much easier.
Nearly four years of posts.
I also deleted all the media I’d uploaded to NostrMedia through August 1. Gigabytes of it.
Some things will linger for a while in caches and on relays that don’t honor NIP-09. Others will fall away as relays prune, rotate, or disappear.
This is my sand mandala.
Let’s see what survives.

Funny thing is, I used to post on Nostr because of the censorship resistance.
Now I also post here because it’s basically the director’s cut of what I share online.
Given the current user/relay situation, I’m pretty sure in three years no one will ever see it.
It’s hard enough for me to find my own past posts. 😆
I’ve been here for coming up on four years. I love the people here and the idea behind Nostr. But we shouldn’t delude ourselves about where it is right now.
There’s way too much Trump-style “we’re winning” rhetoric when the numbers say otherwise.
Divine landing Taco Bell is cool, but if nobody knows Nostr is under the hood, that’s not Nostr marketing. That’s been the problem from the beginning.
We let the devs do the marketing.
The OG Nostr crowd is starting to sound like Al Bundy reminiscing about 2023. “You should’ve seen us back then.”
Never build your house on someone else’s land. Your website, forum, chat, whatever you control, is home. Social media is a traffic source.
So, make connections. Keep building. Nostr is worth saving. But no matter what, wherever we go from here, let’s stay connected.

I can usually tell when somebody uses voice-to-text.
They’ll send me some perfectly normal business message like:
Hey, just wanted to circle back on this and make sure we’re all on the same page. I think we’re pretty much aligned, but let’s make sure the numbers are right and that we’re not promising anything we can’t the liver on.
Also, can you loop Sarah in? She’s been handling most of the social meatier stuff, so I’d like to get her thoughts before we move forward.

You're basically right on white, grey, and black.
The confusing part is that white, grey, and black are the really well-established categories. Once you get into red, blue, green, yellow, purple, etc., the terminology gets a lot less standardized, and some of them genuinely have multiple definitions.
So roughly:
WHITE HAT = ethical hacker. Works with authorization to find vulnerabilities and reports them so they can be fixed.
GREY HAT = operates somewhere between white and black. May hack without permission or technically break the law, but generally isn't doing it with malicious intent. The classic example would be someone who finds a vulnerability without authorization and then discloses it. They might report it responsibly, publish it, ask for payment, or otherwise operate outside the normal rules. That's why grey covers a pretty wide spectrum.
BLACK HAT = malicious hacker. Theft, fraud, extortion, destruction, espionage, ransomware, personal gain, etc.
RED HAT = generally a vigilante hacker who goes after black hats. They may use aggressive or even illegal methods to disrupt them, destroy their infrastructure, or shut them down. There are some alternate uses of the term, but that's the common hacker-hat definition.
BLUE HAT = genuinely ambiguous. One definition is an outside security researcher or tester brought in to find vulnerabilities, particularly before release. That usage is heavily associated with Microsoft's BlueHat program, although Microsoft itself has said "BlueHat hacker" isn't actually a formal category. In other circles, blue hat means a revenge-motivated or vengeful hacker.
GREEN HAT = a beginner or aspiring hacker who is actively learning the craft.
YELLOW HAT = another poorly standardized one. It's often used in expanded taxonomies for hackers who focus on social media accounts, social engineering, scams, psychological manipulation, and other human-focused attacks. Other sources use yellow hat for authorized ethical security testing, basically overlapping with white hat, so this one definitely depends on who's using the term.
PURPLE HAT = also pretty fuzzy. You'll see it used for someone who attacks their own systems in a controlled environment to learn and improve their skills, and sometimes for someone who combines offensive and defensive security skills. That second definition probably gets some of its meaning from purple team terminology.
And then RED TEAM, BLUE TEAM, and PURPLE TEAM are a separate naming system from the hats.
RED TEAM = offensive security. Authorized people emulate real attackers and try to penetrate or exploit an organization's systems to find vulnerabilities and see what gets detected.
BLUE TEAM = defensive security. They're protecting the systems, detecting attacks, investigating them, responding to them, and hardening the environment.
PURPLE TEAM = collaboration between red and blue. Instead of red attacking and simply handing over a report afterward, offensive and defensive people work together and share findings, detection gaps, and techniques so the defenses improve as they go.
So someone can be a red team hacker or blue team hacker without being a red hat or blue hat hacker. Those are two different naming systems.
And worth saying outright, the further you get beyond white, grey, and black, the more you're dealing with informal hacker taxonomy rather than standardized industry terminology.
You'll see red hat, blue hat, green hat, yellow hat, purple hat, etc. constantly in articles and hacker classification lists, but working security people are much more likely to describe themselves as pentesters, red teamers, security researchers, bug bounty hunters, threat actors, incident responders, and so on.
So white, grey, and black are pretty solid. Red and green have fairly recognizable informal meanings. Blue, yellow, and purple are where things start getting fuzzy because there really isn't one universally agreed-upon rainbow of hacker hats.

Was passing through this little town in Alabama today and saw some amazing classic cars.
Apparently, on the first Friday of every month, they block off the main street through historic downtown and fill it with classic cars.
I only had about 15 minutes to look around, and I really wish I’d had more time. I could have spent a long time walking up and down that street.

I dug into it a little bit, and I think the interview you're referring to is Ehrman's January 10, 2006 appearance on the Lutheran program Issues, Etc. with Todd Wilken, discussing 'Misquoting Jesus.'
The exchange has been quoted and paraphrased quite a bit since then.
The thing is, Ehrman has never claimed that the hundreds of thousands of textual variants mean we have no idea what the New Testament says.
Quite the opposite.
He has repeatedly stated that the vast majority of variants are trivial or insignificant, that in most places we can reconstruct what the authors wrote with considerable confidence, and that no essential Christian doctrine depends on a disputed textual variant.
So I don't see that as something he admits only when pressed.
It's explicitly part of his position.
The important distinction is between reconstructing what a text said and determining what that text actually tells us historically.
Those are different questions.
We can reconstruct Matthew extremely well without establishing that Matthew the disciple wrote it. The canonical Gospels themselves appear to have originally circulated anonymously.
There is also the language problem. Jesus (Yeshua) spoke Aramaic, while the canonical Gospels were composed in Greek, decades later.
So even perfectly reconstructing the earliest Greek text of a Gospel does not take us back to the exact Aramaic words spoken by Jesus decades earlier. The traditions themselves had already been transmitted, retold, and translated before the Gospel authors ever wrote them down.
Likewise, historical criticism of the Torah points to multiple sources and layers of composition over centuries rather than five books written personally by Moses.
Then there is everything that happened before and around the texts themselves.
Early Christianity was not one monolithic movement.
Different groups competed over theology, authority, Christology, Jewish law, salvation, and other issues, and writings circulated under the names of authoritative figures like Peter, Paul, Thomas, and James.
Ehrman has written extensively about pseudonymous writings, competing Christianities, how traditions developed before they were written down, and how some texts eventually became Scripture while others did not.
That's why I think reducing his argument to "there are a lot of errors, but most of them don't matter" misses most of what he actually does.
If you're interested in his actual position, 'Misquoting Jesus' is the accessible introduction to the manuscript issue.
It's a great book. I often recommend it to people as a starting point.
For the serious textual-critical treatment, there's 'The Text of the New Testament,' which he coauthored with Bruce Metzger.
'Forged' gets into authorship and pseudonymous writings.
'Lost Christianities' deals with competing early Christian movements and the different scriptures they regarded as authoritative.
'Jesus Before the Gospels' looks at the transmission of traditions before they were ever written down.
And 'Jesus, Interrupted' gets into the broader historical-critical issues, including authorship, contradictions, and what the biblical authors themselves were actually trying to say.
Ehrman is an agnostic atheist today, but historical criticism itself isn't an atheist project.
He has also been quite explicit that textual criticism and biblical contradictions are not ultimately what caused him to lose his faith.
He remained a Christian for years afterward and has said the problem of suffering was the decisive issue for him.
I don't agree with every conclusion Ehrman has ever reached, nor do I feel any need to.
But I do think it's important to represent his position accurately.
Saying that most of the New Testament text can be reconstructed with considerable confidence and saying that there are significant textual, historical, authorship, and interpretive problems are not mutually exclusive claims.

You can’t distill a lifetime of scholarship into a sound bite. His proof of work speaks for itself.
As someone who has read all of his books and followed his work and blog for many years, I assure you his contribution to the field is far greater than that.

Yes, it includes the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books found in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles. Not the Gnostic Gospels or the additional books found in other Christian canons, such as the Ethiopian canon.

Got the SBL Study Bible. This is the updated edition I've been looking forward to, and probably the last book I buy before I head out.
I have many versions of the Bible, from William Tyndale to the Lamsa Bible. But if I could only keep one English translation, it would be the NRSVue, the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition.
It's the latest revision of the NRSV, which comes out of the RSV tradition and carries forward the long English Bible tradition from Tyndale through the King James Version and later revisions. The American Standard Version was the RSV's direct ancestor.
The RSV was published in 1952, the NRSV in 1989, and the NRSVue in 2021. Over that history, each revision has incorporated advances in textual criticism, linguistics, manuscript study, and our understanding of the ancient world.
The NRSVue is not an entirely new translation. It's a substantial scholarly revision of the NRSV, incorporating newer textual evidence and developments in the study of ancient languages. It takes the ancient texts seriously and puts them into clear, contemporary English.
It’s readable, precise, and based on the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The SBL’s preface explains that the RSV was “authorized to improve the translation, based on more evidence of the original texts and early translations of the Bible,” including ancient translations into Arabic, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Georgian Greek, Syriac, and Latin. Not somebody’s interpretation of somebody else’s translation. Going back to the sources.
This is the kind of translation serious biblical scholars, seminaries, and academics use. Bart Ehrman, one of the foremost New Testament scholars and textual critics of our time, has called the NRSV the best English translation of the Bible available, a view shared by many other biblical scholars.
The Society of Biblical Literature took the HarperCollins Study Bible, a long-standing academic and seminary resource, and thoroughly revised it with the NRSVue. It was published in 2023 as the SBL Study Bible and was the first study Bible to include the complete NRSVue text.
It has introductions, notes, textual criticism, historical and cultural background, maps, charts, essays, and the Apocrypha.
This is the version I've been waiting for. I'm also waiting for the print edition of the updated New Oxford Annotated Bible, which will also use the NRSVue. Those are really the two best English-language academic study Bibles to own.
There's only so much room in the car, so I have to get selective about which books come with me on the road.
This one gets a spot alongside the Hindu classics, Buddhist texts, the Qur'an, Taoist and Sikh scriptures, Osho, Science of Mind, Sanskrit language books, and a few others.
I'll have my entire digital library with me, of course, and plenty of audiobooks. But some texts just feel better in your hands. And there's something nice about being able to sit down and read without needing power.
