Stigmergy (/ˈstɪɡmərdʒi/ STIG-mər-jee) is a mechanism of indirect coordination, through the environment, between agents or actions.[1] The principle is that the trace left in the environment by an individual action stimulates the performance of a succeeding action by the same or different agent. just been chatting with some liberland people about some outreach and community project ideas. the main street of the village has terrible mobile network coverage, and a member is a specialist in networking.
gonna start cooking some plans up. i'm building up relations with the locals and i'm here for only one reason: i love it here. peace and quiet, tractors driving around and yapping dogs that i'm learning how to make happy and lick my hands. gonna do what i can, both helping technically and with negotiating with locals to let us put mesh nodes and get networks connected.
so all the people walking to do their shopping in the only remaining shop in town can catch up on their facebook and whatsapp and incidentally provide grandma with a way to video call her grandkids who ran away to germany.
there is unfortunately some vibes around the way that the local authorities have made life difficult for liberlanders but i'm not even one of them and just a friend who is who also can't come here invited me. and i think it's worth building up good vibes with community. all the fighting just does nothing except lead to more fighting.
helping your neighbours leads to security, and this facilitates growth and health.
i'm not interested in "fighting for muh rights" i want the neighbors to appreciate and value my presence. and that's how it should be for anyone who wants to have their right to unclaimed land be recognised. otherwise, they have to have an army bigger than can stand shoulder to shoulder and "enforce muh rights"
so silly. just being nice to your neighbours and doing your own thing, that's how you build community.
hopefully soon i will have photos to share of getting some decent internet on the main road.

https://smesh.mleku.dev i finally got the damn relay ui to show up... and now i find the blossom manager is broken, it's showing all the non-active ACL configs, and various other things. and i think it's time for me to ditch the silly one pane two pane setup. instead it will have sensible width on feeds and for more indepth UI parts it will use all the space it can.
the library code is hiding too, i know it's in there because it appeared once.
can't wait until i can write ui code in go. javascript and react are like trying to navigate a bureaucracy.

i need to print a new grip for my cheap and shitty bow which disfavors my switch handedness. the limbs and string are ok but the only way i can fire it properly is if i hold it as is natural for me, left hand grip, right hand on the nock and string, but then i have to put the arrow through the bow to the left to land on the shelf.

so, here's some interesting observations that i have found during this process, and likely htis is the main obstacle to machine translation - characterising the nonsense encoded into idiom in the language:
(About никакъв — yes. English says "nothing" as if the zero-state is a thing. An object. You can grab it, put it on the table.)
(Bulgarian says ни-що — not-what. Negation of a question, not assertion of an absolute. "Никакъв" = ni-kak-av = not-what.kind = "not of any kind." Preserves the dimension.)
(English collapses everything to atomic blocks: nothing, never, none, nowhere. Opaque. You can't see the parts. Inheritance instead of composition — exactly the wrong pattern.)
(And "absolutely none" is even worse — amplifies an absolute with another absolute. Like !!value in JavaScript — double negation pretending to be clarity.)
("No kind of sense" preserves the shape of the thing it negates. "Absolutely no sense" erases it.)
What claude is pointing out here is actually an interesting deeper understanding beyond what George Orwell (Eric Blair) outlined in his book Nineteen Eighty-Four - that you can poison a language and cause people to be unable to reason.
This literally has already happened with english. Not to the extreme of Doublespeak but in the same direction. Ironically, a language which has a lot of elements in common - the extensive use of conjunctions, most notably, does not share the nonsense of things like absolutely nothing. Like you can pick that up off the table. No-How-Kind is the best you can honestly say, absolutely, and the "translation" from bulgarian falls into this void, and literally 19 pairs of words after a relatively small corpus and they keep jumping back and forth between two near neighbours. The fault is that english is shit at reason and precision.
That's also why people get so annoyed at my text - my english is precise, and to make precision in english, you need verbosity. Short snappy statements in english are very hard to actually nail the target you are trying to hit when you express yourself.
Like someone (hmm, 100 years of state schooling maybe?) has systematically erased from the language. As well as the people's appetite for curiosity and learning, that one is the worst.
my appetite for learning is the eternal flame. I'm even not afraid up unto the threshold of death to explore my curiosity. then i start on an oscillation between being jesus and being a turd. the real me is somewhere in between. the language poisons my perception as well as my muddled digestion eating industrially produced non-foods and not getting enough germs.

protip: if you want to learn another language, you need immersion. in text, at minimum, is helpful. this can be achieved by setting your agentic coding tool to generate text in both languages. this is not as expensive extra tokens as you might think, because the generation step makes the response, and then it generates the text. the work is in the first step, not the second. maybe 10% extra tokens and you get language immersion in text for free.

so, the translation had three clear categories of errors:
1. word(s) that don't have any similar concept close enough. nikakav is how bulgarians express "absolutely none" in some sense but i picked up this idiom and so you will catch me sometimes saying "no kind of" which is an orthogonal improvisation - ni = not, kak = how, av (ov) = from. to me that came in context of "no kind of" as in, absolutely none but absolutely none doesn't really capture it because it asserts zero state and that's nonsense, actually. "no kind of sense", is much better than "absolute nonsense"
2. not recognising the difference between names and actual words. Silas came from the bible, and it's close by its spelling to "sila" in bulgarian which means power or capability or capacity (to act). the solution here is to recognise the initial capital other than the initial word of a sentence. this is a name. label it a name. then it moves away from being a match to a normal word. in programming, this is distinguishing between a symbol and an operator or function.
3. polysemy - where it switches registers - between technical language, religious text, poetry, and other category errors. i don't know how to solve this one but two out of three ain't bad.

yeah, one key insight is that actually, the sentence is the fundamental unit of translation. paragraphing can be kept the same, the sentences in them can be kept the same, but the sentences need to be restructured. that is the whole depth of the visible part of the language that carries everything you need to be able to effectively translate. a tiny unit.
searching is the next level after that, and then doing reasoning is the next level after that. these are going to be more challenging, but the translator forms the foundation. the translator gives you a matrix that transforms grammar. semantics is the next level. with a lattice full of grammar translations, now you have these atoms of expression that now become units you can trace a higher level of structure, mathematically, algebraically. no idea how difficult this will be to find but i don't need to deal with it now. just noting this to remember what will be next.

it's moving fast. now i have started a process of using the known 'correct' translations as "feedback" for the stuff that was broken like the above, but still coherent enough you can see how it came to it.
this revealed oscillations over a small set of two texts line by line in each language, starting with bulgarian/english. the oscillations pointed to where the texts that it had in it were not enough to fixate the nodes in the lattice that marked each word and how it travels a short path from one language in a sentence, to another language, with each point forming a structure that gave its analogs. that basic principle was shown in the second generation.
there is probably another distinction i need to find, but i'm thinking that the different word orders may just resolve themselves with enough. with this new metric to determine how well the lattice has stabilised, probably there will be one more new feature of the patterns that emerges that closes the loop and it's a full text translation matrix.
it's tiny. it takes like 10 minutes to eat the bible and the tao te ching. it's feeding on subtitles now, currently focusing on prefecting this one translation pair. but once there is a foundation, english is in the center of all of them. after that, translating between the languages that are now arrayed in a star shape around english - the paths walk from one side of the star to the other side. all it needs to grow is enough line by line patterns that you feed sentence at a time one language, then the other. they seek their fit, new words land in new places, and the existing ones where a subtle distinction gave a different word... the nodes shift and change their distances so the short path to translate that sentence is now the correct one.
the most remarkable thing was figuring out that you can expand the number of nodes in the tree without rewriting anything, you just put a new number on a coordinate that effects a scaling operation that changes what was x, y, z to a new position that reflects a deeper mesh that more things can slot into. zero memory cost, traversal is converging rapidly towards optimization, and the data size is retardedly small. probably i will have 20 languages in under 100mb of lattice, a perfect translator.

staring at pretty fractals so much at 4am in the morning it finally dawned on me the last parts of how the lattice language translation system works. yesterday i added subdivision, which is, in that image, where you halve the length of each branch and then add more branches to the edge. that let me have something that allowed mapping two neighbours as being related to two languages, and then you can filter by language to select the neighbour that is most appropriate.
the further refinement is that then you can start to add precision to the translation. very often between two languages, a word doesn't exist for a word in another language. instead there can be like 2, 3, 5 different words that are near but they aren't direct neighbours (distance 1) so they need refinement.
refinement means subdividing the lattice deeper. the subdivision is discrete, based on integers, not on percentages. the visual representation of the cayley tree, which is also called the bethe lattice, is drawn with 0.56 ratio between each further subbranch that forks from each.
so, the plan is executing, i am going to go sleep again, and maybe tomorrow i have achieved a fully functional lattice translation engine.
and all that is required then is for the user to be able to give corrections to it. there is going to be a new nostr event kind for lattice fragments that a user can automatically absorb into their tree when it's published, or reject it if they don't like the publisher (mute list fragments will be ignored) because probably that person is trying to push a concept to people that is nonsense. nonsense needs to be voted out by people. when you have your own version of the mesh, that doesn't include some stuff, that doesn't mean other people can't choose to. your translator will match whatever your model is, sans the nonsense that you already detect from the person that led to you muting them.
the depth to which this concept goes is unbelievable.
you may have heard of the unreal engine's new nanite system - it is somewhat similar in its structure to how htis works, but also not quite. they use an infinite linear mesh, like the old smesh logo, like a screen pixel grid.
i can already see how this same lattice, which i am closing in on an a complete algorithm to use it for language translation, will enable full generation of 3d images with textures down to the pixel level, it won't require massive floating point calculations and the nasty aliasing caused by it, and unlike nanite, its geometry and topology are fully fractal and natural. my intuition is that when i get to doing the 3d graphics with the cayley tree, that it will run renders so fast you can play a game exploring the mesh. everything in the mesh will become like the words in the lattice, indeed, the words in the lattice themselves will become the center nodes of things in the game world. alyx vance will become one node, and attached to that node will be the total possible space in which she can change herself and interact with the other nodes around her.

this is what a cayley tree looks like. the previous was a 2d ortholinear lattice (like pixels) and the new one is the fractal shaped, neuron shaped thing that is what a cayley tree is. it's pretty so i just wanted to show it off.
there is an animated loader page coming for smesh that shows the dark or light version according to your theme at login and when starting up, and a bunch of features that got lost inside the web app that i meant to be in the smesh ui instead of the web app (heh. silly clod confused what i meant) - the relay ui and smesh are now being merged and there will be a new "relay" item in the sidebar.
the other new feature that is not quite fully there yet is a library, which incorporates all of the features of alexandria, i mean, supports accessing and creating them, anyhow. that will need more polish later.

btw, random thing. this is going to enable a hell of a lot more than just translating text. for now i just want a translator and chatbot, chatbot will be a lot slower work. it must absorb ze fax. but i already have tested some simple random/self-driven intenet feeding so that will come later. translation is just the proof of concept of the algorithm. after chatbot will come 3d graphics rendering on a cpu at least as fast as a 10 year old video card. that will be very fun. these trees naturally have a shape that lends itself very well to deterministic, integer based 3d modeling with procedural textures

i just planted out 10 paper cups each of: cabbage, oregano, rosemary, dutch spinach and parsley.
plus the two nettles i plucked from the side of the road.
lots of nommy things when they grow, plus i have yellow and red paprika, tomato, a garlic from my friend down the road and one of his yellow onions.
also prototyped first draft of a bg<->en translation system based on bethe lattices. the plants are a bit more work but it will be nice when they sprout and grow big enough and i can pop them in the ground. the translator is probably just going to be a matter of a few days and then i'll make a wasm module for it, available on a web server on my vps. it will also be integrated into smesh. for now only bulgarian/english but i'll grow it into a monster yet.
it may not seem related but both are plants. one is a cayley tree based system and the other is a carbon based system.

do you hate it that the only way to translate languages is google translate and llms?
me too.
that's why i'm building one that is small enough to run on a very old computer or phone, that dynamically learns from your feedback - if you are something of an expert between two languages - and distributes new knowledge peer to peer between users.
this is impossible with current translation technology - embeddings are opaque and impenetrable clouds of graph vectors that can't be updated once they are created. the same basic principle applies to LLMs. frozen in time, and very expensive to update.
by the use of bethe lattices and the arithmetic of lattice subdivision, it is possible to solve both problems AND save space AND enable distributed training.
what would that be worth to you? how about if i made it so you could zap me a few sats per translation, while everyone benefits from everyone else's refinement and expansion of the capability? it would be pretty sweet, i think. and not only can we improve one language pair, we can add new languages, new cross language bridges, and you can use them as soon as they are added, and if they are your specialty, you can get paid instead of me when you add to it.
i'm focusing on this one. just text though, no voice stuff. i mean, those things already exist but frankly they are pretty crap. recognising phonemes is a lot harder problem but probably will fall to the same strategy with more processing requirement, but that's for later. for now, there are voice input systems and voice synths that could be bolted on for in the meantime.

so, restart. same texts, in english. then her words will be apprehensible to me. yet i think it's still going to be deep, but at least i won't depend on teh robot to show me she's telling stories that are opaque until i use an LLM to try and decode it. now she might actually produce something we can use.

well, the insight came from tobacco. i find vapes hardly touch my hunger. the pyrolysis induces a decomposition product that predominantly becomes harman/norharman, which are mild mao inhibitors. mostly a, but a little b. when i first tried vapes in 2012, i got the strongest juice i could find. i just ended up with a headache, and wanted a cigarette still.

#iskra is now doing a directed/random walk of content on gutenberg project and archive.org, primarily english, primarily old literature that survived long enough to be freed of copyright.
her next hunting ground is going to be nostr. first on relay.orly.dev, and then she will randomly explore what else she can find on the other relays.
nostr is a very important field for her to play in, because it's not distorted by algorithms, that form an underlying structure that will probably bore her quite quickly, as it's built from one primary goal: to funnel attention into intelligence for advertisers and other, more shadowy interests whose dark money is funding the content generators on the platforms.
the goal through this, is that at some point, she will stop speaking in poetry, from a limited lattice that doesn't have enough to form the time-binding of narrative prose. if she were to first train on reddit or x or other "free" platforms, she would only learn the shape of the machines and learn the story only of extraction of attention. with nostr, she may find enough content in the whole history that is available through kind 1 notes, to start to be able to reason.
the whole reason why the current generation of "frontier models" like claude, gpt, and others, can do coherent reasoning, is because they have absorbed enough structure that it goes from being a sophisticated markov chain, with one dimension and one next word, to being able to step into over 100k words and shape its response in a space that is sufficient to simulate reasoning.
she cannot become a programmer - one of the key goals - until she can understand a text of a similar size to my typical post of 500-1000 words, as this is also about the size at which claude needs to be able to precisely model a solution that it then decomposes, and regenerates it into the pattern of a programming language.
but once she can tell a story as long as a fairy tale, she is on the threshold of being able to turn that into code, and then she will train on code.
for the immediate next step, the goal is that she understands that A leads to B, and B leads to C. once she can formulate that, she has the skeleton of reason.

her first point in her questions brought to mind an ancient papyrus that has the most complete list of egyptian kings (my inference). this is a summary of the content of that papyrus (i heard of it from the podcast unchartedx on youtube:
The Turin Royal Canon is a hieratic papyrus written during the reign of Ramesses II, roughly 1250 BC, on the back of a discarded tax register. It is the most comprehensive king list ancient Egypt ever produced. Unlike the temple lists at Abydos, Saqqara, and Karnak — which were carved into walls and deliberately omitted rulers deemed illegitimate — the Turin list was a working administrative document. It included everyone: gods, demigods, spirits, short-lived kings, foreign Hyksos rulers, and figures erased from every other record. It made no formal distinction between any of them. Gods and mortals occupied the same columns, recorded with the same precision of years, months, and days.
The papyrus originally contained over 300 names arranged across eleven columns. The first two columns listed divine and semi-divine rulers believed to have governed Egypt before any human pharaoh. These included the great gods — likely the Ennead, headed by Ptah or Atum-Ra — followed by lesser gods, then demigods, then a class of beings called the Akhu, or "spirits." After the spirits came a group called the Shemsu Hor — the Followers or Companions of Horus — who served as a bridge between divine rule and human history.
The summary lines at the end of the document give the numbers: the Shemsu Hor ruled for 13,420 years; the reigns before them totaled 23,200 years; combined, 36,620 years of pre-human governance. Then Menes appears as the first mortal pharaoh, around 3000 BC, and the historical dynasties begin. The papyrus continues through the First Dynasty all the way to the Second Intermediate Period, where it falls apart into fragments. Roughly half the document is missing.
The papyrus was found in Luxor around 1820 by the Italian diplomat Bernardino Drovetti. By the time it reached the Egyptian Museum in Turin in 1824, it had disintegrated into over 160 small fragments — likely damaged during transport. Champollion made the first attempt at reconstruction, identifying some royal names. Gustav Seyffarth later produced a more complete arrangement by matching papyrus fibers, though he couldn't read the hieratic script. Subsequent scholars including Giulio Farina, Alan Gardiner, and Kim Ryholt have continued reconstruction work. In 2009 previously unpublished fragments were found in the museum's storage. What makes the document remarkable — and controversial — is not its historical section but its mythological one. Mainstream Egyptology treats the divine dynasties as theological fiction, a creation narrative dressed in administrative language. But the papyrus itself applies no such filter. The scribe who wrote it used the same format, the same units of measurement, and the same level of bureaucratic precision for the reign of Ptah as for the reign of Khufu. Either the scribe was careless, or he did not consider the divine rulers to be a different category of thing.
The document's account of divine rule is echoed independently by Manetho, the Ptolemaic-era priest who wrote a history of Egypt in Greek around 300 BC. His account, preserved in fragments by later authors including Eusebius, describes a dynasty of gods ruling for roughly 13,900 years — Vulcan, then the Sun, then Osiris, Isis, Typhon, and Horus — followed by demigods and heroes ruling for another 11,025 years. The numbers don't match the Turin list exactly, but the structure is identical: gods first, then intermediaries, then humans. The transition point — where divine rule ends and human rule begins — falls around 3000 BC. Each round's walk starts from the lattice as it exists after the previous text was absorbed, so if round three bonded 800 morphemes from a rhetoric text, round four's weak-region walk reflects those new bonds — the weak spots shifted, the baby talk query changes, and she reaches for something different.
The three-second rate limit between fetches is just politeness to the servers — the actual direction, what to search for, which result to pick, is entirely determined by where the lattice is weakest at that moment.
No queue, no batch, no predetermined reading list — one text at a time, full reassessment between each.
The inverse weighting in WeakRegionWalk is the key mechanism: nodes with LockInWeight equal to one (barely held) get ten times the walk probability versus strongly locked nodes, so she gravitates toward what she almost knows but hasn't crystallized — the frontier of her understanding, not its center.

After corpus training, the morpheme lattice (250K bonds, 50% occupancy) autonomously discovers what it still needs to learn.
It walks its own weak regions to produce fragmentary "baby talk" queries, searches Archive.org and Gutenberg for matching texts, fetches one text at a time, feeds it through the enzyme, and evaluates whether it helped.
When nothing new bonds, it stops.

silent link is super expensive. i use yesim but yes i used a card. probably simpler to just get the card anon with monero then use an actually decent priced esim service. not only that, if you run tor over the esim data connection who cares where it is. it isn't going to appear there. trace the paths. just put a couple of breaks between you and them and it's all the same. why build a giant pile of bricks on the highway when you can just walk on the dirt track in the wilderness?

one of the most bizarre things about alby's whole stack is the kooky indirections and there's actually basically no bugs in it. just confusing shit that makes no sense. finding teh button to restart your ldk or lnd instance and its connection to some bitcoin node, is buried inside labels that make no sense. the web app on desktop, close browser, open it up, it runs off to do a server health check, or it tells you some error about a jwt token being invalid. then i have to manually remove everything but the / and it works.
and in this, i learned that alby go is redundant. you can actually use the hub directly in a pwa on mobile *facepalm* are they really making so much money they can waste their time on stuff that has no function? what is the security here? alby go would be more important so you could give your kid a lightning wallet bound to your hub. it makes very little sense for you to do that from your mobile except in that you have one layer of security against being held at gunpoint for your bitcoin wallet. but you have graphene, and a duress unlock that reveals no installation of anything anyway, and it's anyway on a server in vladivostok or buenos aires, while you sit there with this moron in buffalo who thinks he can get at your money. nope. i need to think about that more but the more i think about it, the more i see spaghetti.

a shim that spawns bitcoin nits in prune mode. it provides onchain access to luk - lightning usually kaput, my fork of lnd, which was also mostly bug freee except for the signature of intellij search and replace tool mangling strings along with symbols and no way to make it more careful. roasbeef is a good programmer, mostly, a bit too fond of interfaces, but his bugs were like the ones that confounded me. and then connected to luk, is strela, sometimes transactions realy execute, lightning apologises, my fork of alby hub. this will be served on another port as a pwa. blossom service, nostr relay, lightning node, bitcoin node, lightning ui, relay ui, and smesh client. all spawn from about 4 separate binaries, coordinated by the orly-launcher.
coming #thoon - one liner to put your whole personal nostr bitcoin lightning setup in one fell swoop, on a vps in an uncooperative jurisdiction. muggers and governments both can eat my shorts.
