It’s an act of compassion, not an academic exercise. You can put more heart into it than thought, and it’ll still come out great. ❤️

This is pretty sad, social.lol folks. It only takes a moment to write some alt text, and it makes your media accessible to everyone. We have multiple visually impaired members and you’re just excluding them entirely. :prami_sad:
I’d like to think we don’t need a hard rule to get people to do the right thing, but maybe we do? In any case, I’ll probably start to reach out to people who aren’t adding alt text over the next few days.

I’m pondering a policy change for social.lol/omg.lol, but I’d really like your input on it.
We don’t currently have any rules surrounding sharing AI or generative content here. (We have very little of that content being shared, but there’s some.)
I don’t think outright forbidding it is the right approach. What one person might view as “slop” might be regarded by someone else as the assistive output from an accessibility tool. The lines can be blurry and the use cases aren’t always black and white.
What I’d like to explore is a policy around honest disclosure of generative AI outputs. Forget about whether it’s good or bad or right or wrong — those debates will continue regardless (as they should). But separate from any moral or ethical considerations, the question is: would it be reasonable to ask anyone who shares generative AI outputs to clearly label them as such?
Using a consistent hashtag would take care of disclosure, and would also make it easy for folks to hide that content if they don’t want to see it.

“Hardcore IndieWeb” is a reminder that you don’t need to be dependent on any blogging service (or even any piece of software or workflow) to share your stuff on the web.
True independence is making a website and uploading the files to a web server, without anyone else’s stuff standing between you and your published HTML.

Many of these guys are mostly concerned with the standards, protocols, and technical implementations of the social web.
I'm far more interested in building an equitable, inclusive, and safe social web. One where kindness is demonstrated in actions and through interactions, and not merely putted back and forth by techbros whose main idea of kindness is closer to sycophancy than anything else.

Kindness is helping someone in need, especially when you can.
Kindness is advocating for someone who may not be able to advocate for themselves.
Kindness is recognizing harm and actively calling it out.
Kindness is standing up to bullies and holding them accountable for their harm.
These are genuine acts of kindness. But when they’re performed in the presence of the social web majority, they’re often characterized as unkind.

I always find it interesting when the subject of kindness comes up in the context of the social web, because it usually highlights very specific perspectives associated with the term.
A privileged white cishet man often has a different notion of kindness when compared to a black trans woman working a minimum wage job.
But because the privileged white guy makes up the majority of “the social web”, he asserts his own standard of kindness and pushes it on everyone else.
