#WritersCoffeeClub 9 April: How much room for the fantastical is there in your work?
It depends on the project. I would love to sit/stand/annoyingly pace back and forth and say that I’d cram the fantastical like a suitcase. The problem is that, sometimes, the story needs something a little more grounded. That doesn’t mean that the room for the fantastical isn’t there, just that it’s not serving the story right then.

#WritersCoffeeClub 3/6. How do you feel you can further develop as a writer?
Everyone can further develop as a writer. I feel as though I’m very self-conscious when it comes to my own language, and I’m very fixated on finding the best possible word to be used in the best possible place. While I recognize the positives of this, it also holds me back.

Yes, and. It's amazing that YA is helping new readers tackle deep-rooted, highly discursive issues. However, the conversation did not start and end with today's YA. We have classics that cover similar topics in different ways. We are discussing those topics differently, and literature is evolving to shape that, but we have not forgotten Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, Simon Avery...
