Hoy, 5.700 millones de personas — el 72% de la humanidad — viven bajo regímenes autocráticos.
El patrón es siempre el mismo.
Controlar la comunicación: decidir qué puede decir, leer y compartir la gente.
Controlar el dinero: decidir si la gente puede ahorrar, transaccionar o sobrevivir de forma independiente.
Controlar la identidad: decidir si la gente es reconocida, documentada o si se le permite existir.
Comunicación. Dinero. Identidad.
Tres controles. Una arquitectura.
Y estos regímenes no están aislados. Aprenden unos de otros. Comparten herramientas. Iteran.
La opresión es una empresa colaborativa.
Por eso el viejo lenguaje de la libertad ya no alcanza. No basta con decir que la gente debe ser libre.
Hay que hacer la pregunta más difícil: ¿quién tiene las llaves?

Today, 5.7 billion people — 72% of humanity — live under autocratic rule.
The pattern is always the same.
Control communication: decide what people can say, read, and share.
Control money: decide whether people can save, transact, or survive independently.
Control identity: decide whether people are recognized, documented, or allowed to exist.
Communication. Money. Identity.
Three controls. One architecture.
And these regimes are not isolated. They learn from each other. They share tools. They iterate.
Oppression is a collaborative enterprise.
That is why the old language of freedom is no longer enough. We cannot just say people should be free.
We have to ask the harder question: who holds the keys?

Comienza cuando alguien más tiene las llaves de las libertades básicas de tu vida.
Si puedes hablar. Si puedes moverte. Si puedes ver a tu familia. Si puedes existir como ciudadano.
Aprendí esto en siete años como preso político en Venezuela.
Las llaves nunca fueron mías. Cada libertad dependía de la decisión de otro.
Ahí entendí: si la autocracia funciona quitando las llaves, la libertad requiere construir llaves que no puedan quitar.

Autocracy does not begin with handcuffs.
It begins when someone else holds the keys to the basic freedoms of your life.
Whether you can speak. Whether you can move. Whether you can see your family. Whether you can exist as a citizen.
I learned this in seven years as a political prisoner in Venezuela.
The keys were never mine. Every freedom depended on someone else's decision.
That is when I understood: if autocracy works by taking the keys, then freedom requires building keys they cannot take.
Freedom is not something you're given. It's something you hold.

La carrera por dominar la inteligencia artificial se parece cada vez más a la carrera por dominar a las personas.
Las grandes corporaciones tecnológicas construyen sistemas que capturan tus datos, tus preguntas, tus pensamientos — y después te hacen dependiente de sus respuestas. Tus consultas más íntimas, almacenadas en sus servidores, procesadas por sus modelos, monetizadas por sus algoritmos.
Es la vieja lógica de la autocracia con una cara nueva.
Un autócrata controla tu comunicación, tu dinero, tu identidad. Un monopolio tecnológico controla tu información, tu atención, tu inteligencia.
El patrón es el mismo: alguien más tiene la llave.
Pero no tiene que ser así. La inteligencia artificial de código abierto existe. Los modelos locales existen. Puedes correr tu propia inteligencia en tu propia máquina, con tus propios datos, bajo tu propio control.
La pregunta es la misma que siempre se han hecho los movimientos de libertad: ¿quién tiene la llave?
Si tu inteligencia depende de una corporación, puede ser moldeada, censurada, retirada o vendida.
Si tu inteligencia vive contigo, es tuya.
No otorgada. Sostenida.

The race to dominate AI is starting to look a lot like the race to dominate people.
Big tech corporations are building systems that capture your data, your questions, your thoughts — and then make you dependent on their answers. Your most intimate queries, stored on their servers, processed by their models, monetized by their algorithms.
This is the old logic of autocracy wearing a new face.
An autocrat controls your communication, your money, your identity. A tech monopoly controls your information, your attention, your intelligence.
The pattern is the same: someone else holds the key.
But it doesn't have to be this way. Open-source AI exists. Local models exist. You can run intelligence on your own machine, with your own data, under your own control.
The question is the same one freedom movements have always asked: who holds the key?
If your intelligence depends on a corporation, it can be shaped, censored, withdrawn, or sold.
If your intelligence lives with you, it is yours.
Not given. Held.

En CERAWeek están hablando de Venezuela. Es bueno.
Pero la conversación sigue atrapada en el siglo XX: barriles, regalías, quién firma el contrato.
Venezuela tiene 15.700 MW de capacidad hidroeléctrica — la mayoría subutilizada. Gas que se quema todos los días sin generar un dólar. Energía sin mercado.
Esa energía puede convertirse en minería de Bitcoin y centros de cómputo de inteligencia artificial. Sin gasoductos. Sin tanqueros. Contenedores. Meses. Ingresos.
Pero nada de esto funciona sin estado de derecho. Sin tribunales independientes. Sin contratos que sobrevivan un cambio de gobierno.
La geología no ha cambiado. Las instituciones tienen que cambiar.

But the conversation is stuck in the 20th century: barrels, fiscal terms, who gets the contract.
Here's the 21st century version:
Venezuela has 15,700 MW of hydroelectric capacity — mostly idle. Gas flared every day visible from space. Energy with no market.
That energy can be converted into Bitcoin mining and AI compute. No pipelines. No tankers. No 10-year construction cycles. Containers. Months. Revenue.
But none of this works without rule of law. Without independent courts. Without contracts that survive a change of government.
The geology hasn't changed. The institutions must.
