But I think America's problems go deeper than this. The Americans who are willing and able to do real work and care about customer needs have been systematically shut out of the workforce for political reasons. And those who remain have been trained not to care about efficiency and customer needs, but instead about social causes.
In China, hard work and customer focus are specifically promoted by the central government. They have their own corruption problems, and over the next 100 years, the US is probably going to do better, but right at the moment they're ahead...

Finally watched the video. They're subtweeting BYD pretty hard, I don't think that's proven yet at all.
I think companies like Ford and Chrysler are not being serious about serving their customers, so BYD's sub-10k offerings might be trash and they might be quite decent for the money.
Also the notion that the only reason these are cheap is China govt subsidies is not really true. Dacia sells sub-10k vehicles in Europe and they're not "good", but they're are decent enough that taxi companies use them.
The idea that a car starts at 30k is an American phenomenon.

Yeah, this is a real problem, and I'm not sure there's any real incentive to stop it.
IMO it's not specifically the fault of EVs, but rather that as reliability improves, people stop caring about repairability. Even back in the 80s when they started cramming everything under the hood, timing chains that are ~impossible to service, etc.
You might imagine that delivery companies, taxi companies, cop fleets, etc will insist on buying cars they can service - but even for them, if the vehicle lasts 10 years without trouble, they might just not care.
Problem is, new car buyers are stupid, and they trade in every 5 years or so, so reliability after the first decade is not their problem. Maybe if the used market commands 20% of the car's initial cost, that matters, but if the car company can cut cost by 20% by making it impossible to maintain, it's a wash. And the company could also buy back used cars to support the market - even though they're junk.
For the car culture this is hell. You can put together an LS rig, and you can put together a rig on top of a commodity electric chassis, but in either case this is something you have to completely build yourself. Seems like there's just nothing comparable to Fox Body or Camaro ecosystem anymore...

Leaf batteries lid is glued on with some kind of sealant. There are a few ways to cut it so you can pull the lid off.
But yeah, some EVs have the battery integrated into the chassis, so replacement is flat impossible.

With oil getting expensive, and looking to only become more and more expensive, I've been doing a little bit of research on electric cars lately. Here are some of the things I've found:
1. Gasoline engines are about 30% efficient (diesels about 40%). Gasoline has 36 kWh/gallon of chemical energy, so a gasoline engine makes about 11 kWh/gallon.
2. If you pay 20 cents per kWh then that equals $2.20/gallon-equivalent (just multiply your price per kWh by 11 to get gasoline gallon equivalent price) - if you're paying more than that for gasoline, it's cheaper to drive electric.
3. Battery capacity is indeed quite small, a 100kWh battery used in Teslas is one of the biggest, and that's ONLY equivalent to about a 10 gallon tank. And most batteries are 30-60Kwh... That's why everyone speaks in terms of miles of range.
4. From range and capacity, you can deduce equivalent MPG. One Tesla Model S declares 240 miles of range for a 70 kWh battery, that divides to 3.43 miles per kWh, or 37.7 MPG.
5. Early on, there was a lot of fear that battery degradation would bound the lifetime of EVs to about 5 years. We all have experiences with laptops and phones from the 2000s and 2010s which the batteries degraded to the point that they would not even hold 1 minute worth of charge. The good news is this fear turned out to be unfounded. Improved battery chemistries and active cooling has more or less solved this problem, and degradation in EVs is slow and well understood.
6. Not all EVs are alike. As with ICE vehicles, some are quite decent, others are best avoided. With ICE vehicles, there are well known disasters such as Wet Belts, CVT Transmissions, or the Hyundai Theta II engine. With EVs, the problem is less about catastrophic failure and more about oddball designs where replacement parts are rare and expensive, or are simply too difficult to work on. EVs are somewhat unique in that some of them were made in extremely small production runs and in that case, there are few in junk yards and repair parts are in short supply.
7. Not all EVs are alike. Every modern car is locked down to some extent in order to make it more difficult to repair. With EVs as with ICE cars, some of the more popular platforms have been reverse engineered and have a decent aftermarket. So every car platform has two variables: How anti-repair it is made from the factory, and how well has it been reverse-engineered. Tesla is very repair-hostile, but has a large community that has figured a lot of things out. The Nissan Leaf is a fair bit less hostile, and also has a large community and even has aftermarket / Frankenstein battery packs that some people build.
8. Not all EVs are alike. Big dumb touchscreens, and doors that don't open without electricity so you can't get out in a crash are not obligatory. Be smart.
9. The best EVs seem to be the ones which started being made a long time ago (plenty of time to work out the bugs), and are made in large number, by stable car companies w/o financial problems. Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf seem to be fairly good - do your own research of course.
10. Electric motors are more or less bulletproof, so in an EV, the only part that you really need to worry about is the battery pack. Most EV battery packs are removable (WARNING: NOT ALL). They are very heavy so you need jacks to get them out, but once they're out they can be repaired on a workbench.
11. You can usually buy second-hand batteries out of a junk yard (check this before buying a car!). This is the most common way batteries are swapped. You can also (depending on the car) go into the battery pack and do repairs or cell replacement. This is quite dangerous as you're dealing with a uniquely deadly combination of high voltage, and insanely high available amperage - and there's no way to "cut power" because inside of the battery IS the power. So some shops will be happy to swap batteries but unwilling to open them, even if the only thing that failed is a small relay.
10. If you're looking at used EVs, you want to know State of Health (SOH) and voltage difference between cells. Different voltage between cells is a sign of failing cells. If this isn't available in the on-board computer, take it to a shop that does EVs and have them pull the numbers before buying.
11. EV owners often do not charge to 100% because filling all the way degrades the battery faster. There is a setting in the onboard computer to make the car stop charging at 90% or 80%. There is LOTS of advice online about this, reality depends on your battery chemistry. Most EVs are NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries, some newer ones are LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate).
12. Battery fires are another problem that is more-or-less solved, UNLESS, you are in a serious accident that punctures the battery. NMC batteries are known to burn, LFP are much safer in that regard, new/experimental chemistries are being developed which will not burn at all but we're not there yet.
13. EVs do not wear out the same way as ICE vehicles (!!!!) In an ICE vehicle you look at the miles on the odometer to see how worn out it is. A 50 year old car with 20,000 miles is "brand new" as long as it lived its life in a garage. Batteries wear just from sitting, so calendar years on a battery matter, even if it was rarely ever driven in those years. On top of that, EVs from the earlier years had more teething issues, so newer models are often a better choice. In the case of the Leaf, pre-2016 models had a design flaw that cause excessive battery degradation, from 2016 through 2019 quality continuously improved, then after 2020 it became more variable with some QC issues popping up. This kind of "good years and bad years" thing is typical of all models, Do Your Research.

The real problem for a nation-state though is brain drain. You generally want to take care of all of your citizens by redistributing wealth away from the most productive to those in need - if you don't do that then you have elders starving etc.
But if you do that, and I start a state which welcomes foreigners with means and offers them zero tax, I might draw away your most productive citizens. This already happens with places like Poland, which is fairly well administered, but still the smartest and most productive polacks move to the US to make more money...
Also happens on a different scale with places like Malta, Singapore, Switzerland and (formerly) Dubai drawing away high-net-worths from their countries of origin.
Another version of this is China, hiring DRAM engineers away from Korea by offering them 10x their salary at home. They did this to bootstrap a home grown memory business...

1st class is "sufficiently racially/culturally homogenous that they will fight for each other". Families, tribes, whatever is required. The point is that they need to be this close.
They should also be the only ones voting or holding public office, because they're the only ones whose lives are on the line based on decisions of the state.
2nd class (families) can air grievances through their father/husband/son, and 3rd class are immigrants will flee if the state does not treat them well enough.
You want to get rid of the 3rd class entirely, I think a lot of people do, but countries which do that will struggle to be economically competitive because knowledge work requires migration of domain expertise. Think like El Salvador inviting American bitcoiners to go live there and start businesses... That's what we're talking about here, because everything exists in service to the 1st class.

Chopping up the apples is really not worst case at all. They're drops, so for me, they're abandoned.
The clippings, it would be nice if they could be collected for compost or chicken fodder.
I have an unsolved problem which is how to get the apple drops to the chickens, or the chickens to the apple drops, without me doing effort or chickens ending up roosted in the apple trees. We don't have any chickens yet, but this is something I want to solve before getting any...

The object avoidance in the marketing looks pretty solid, though I guess you need to stake around flowers so they don't get ground up.
If I'm not mistaken, acre a day means you could conceivably map out 7 acres of property and have it do a different one each day (?)

That's about $2 per barrel. IMO it can go to around $20-30 per barrel without breaking oil markets because what will happen is oil in the gulf will reduce in price to account for the toll.
Oil in Saudi Arabia is worth $0 if it can't be brought out. KSA can mine oil profitably at around $50, so anything between $50 and $100 is pure profit for them. Iran can appropriate as much of that profit as they want, as long as KSA is still making enough money to be worth pumping, they'll still pump...

I don't think the loss in pipes is that big of a deal. You need H2 rated tank valves, but any tank that's not either being filled or being emptied can be shut off, and then the pipes are not normally holding any pressure.

Right, you store at about 150 PSI / 10 bar. Same as compressed air, so you can use a compressed air or propane tank if you fill the tank with the binding material.
The problem is, the binding material is not cheap, and you still have to pay for the tank, and high pressure tanks are just not that expensive.

There's a number of things that bind H2 - including a lot that are not precious metals. I didn't drill into them much because they don't really outperform tanks from a price perspective.
For example https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Safest-and-Most-Efficient-Solid-Hydrogen_1601558386946.html HyReachX Titanium-Manganese alloy is selling at 24€ per KG and it can bind about 1.5% H2 by weight (15g / KG).
15g is 1 liter at 200 bar. So if you spend 1200€ you have enough alloy to store the equivalent of 50 liters at 200 bar. But a 200 bar 50 liter steel tank is 100-500€ (depending on who you ask).

I made a mistake in computing storage in an H2 tank.
1Kwh of power makes about 15g of H2 (assume 50% efficiency).
At 200 bar (3000 PSI) it's about 15g/liter.
So in a 200 liter high pressure tank, it's about 200Kwh of input energy that is stored.
So we can say: Rule of thumb, at pressure, 1 liter = 1 kWh. In a balloon, 1 cubic meter = 6 kWh.
But there's another way to lock up hydrogen, it's a lot more annoying but if you're making a lot of it, it could be worth it. That's methanol.
Methanol is a liquid, it can be used in an engine, it can be used to make biodiesel out of vegetable oil.
To make methanol from hydrogen, you need carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide. The canonical way to make this is using charcoal, which can obviously be produced from wood.
Making charcoal into CO is straightforward if you use O2 to do it - you even have O2 coming from your electrolysis cell. This produces a lot of energy (you're burning charcoal), and you end up dumping it, but you can be a little more clever by adding steam to the reaction which adds an endothermic component H2O + C -> CO + H2. This has the benefit that you are making even more H2.
The methanol formula is: CO + 2 H₂ → CH₃OH
So for every 1 CO, you need 2 H2, so you need 1 mol of carbon, 1 mol of water, and 1 mol of H2 from the electrolyzer. When you add O2, you need to increase the amount of H2 you supply from the electrolyzer in proportion.
Unfortunately, the methanol reaction is annoying. Methanol wants to react at 100 bar (1500 PSI) and 280C, it *makes* heat as it runs, so you need to cool it.
So you have to get the temperature down so that the CO and H2 can be compressed. A SCUBA style compressor should work. Then once they're compressed, you put them through a heat exchanger with the exiting methanol. Since the methanol reaction is exothermic you only need to keep it from losing too much heat, you don't need to heat it.
The reaction wants to be 250-280C, but at this pressure methanol condenses at 250C so condensing out the methanol is not a huge deal, but unreacted gasses are going to end up at the methanol condenser and you really need to cycle them back around again. So I'm not sure if a circulator pump can be avoided. Obviously at 280C (just under the melting point of lead) and 100 bar of pressure, the last thing I want is moving parts and electricity, but I don't think it can be avoided.
Because the reactor makes heat, it will melt down unless you keep it cool, but this can be achieved by running water or steam over the condenser section. Some of that steam can be then used in the charcoal gasification section.
The syngas reactions are:
1. 6 C + 3 O2 -> 6 CO (-550kJ exothermic)
2. 4 C + 4 H2O -> 4 CO + 4 H2 (+524 kJ endothermic)
Combined that is:
10 C + 4 H2O + 3 O2 -> 10 CO + 4 H2 (-26kJ exothermic)
And the methanol reaction is:
CO + 2 H2 -> CH3OH
Or in this case: 10 CO + 20 H2 -> 10 CH3OH
So we need to supplement 16 H2 from our electrolyzer.
So to make useful numbers:
120 grams of carbon + 72 grams of water + 96 grams of oxygen + 40 grams of hydrogen makes 320 grams of methanol (0.4 liters).
2.6Kwh of energy to make 40 grams of hydrogen.
So for 1kg of carbon, we use 21.6 Kwh of energy making hydrogen, and we end up with 2.6 Kg of methanol (3.36 liters).
If we're making 100kwh per day, we need about 5kg of carbon per day to use them all, and we would of course get about 16 liters of methanol per day.
The charcoal demand is significant, making it from wood implies 4-5kg of wood per 1kg of charcoal, so 50 days a year of 100kWh/day production requires one metric ton of wood to produce the necessary charcoal. However this does make 800 liters of methanol (211 gallons).

Hydrogen electrolysis makes a lot of sense just below the boiling point of water, because you don't need pressure to keep the water liquid, and excess heat from efficiency loss can be recaptured to heat domestic hot water.
If you're prepared to run it at a higher pressure, you can save even more energy because you have less volume of H2 and O2 carrying heat away. But pressure in an electrolyzer makes everything more difficult. What could be plastic now must be ceramic and steel. Pressure vessels are costly and annoying. The bigger they are, the worse they are. If they need to have a removable lid, they're even worse.
Furthermore, the H2 compressor can be placed inside of the vacuum drying chamber so whatever heat it generates will simply assist in the drying process.

Hydrogen is a really nice thing to do with excess electricity. Electrolyzers are fairly easy to build and will take all the power you can throw at them. DIY electrolyzes are about 50-60% efficient, but they make something that's very high value. Hydrogen can be burned, used in an engine, or made back into electricity in a fuel cell. Fuel cells are expensive but it's 50% efficient conversion of H2 to power, gasoline engines are 30% at best.
At first glance, the hydrogen cycle seems extremely lossy, but all of the loss exits as heat. If you have a fuel cell in of your house and you run it in winter months when solar is not plentiful, the loss is all heat which you need in the winter anyway. On the generation side, the loss is also heat - and interestingly, you can make hydrogen at any temperature you want. If you're insane, you can run an electrolyzer at 1000C/1832F and the reaction will actually require 50% less electricity because the heat is contributing to the reaction. Just to give you a picture of what we're talking about, 1000C is about the melting point of copper, well past that of aluminum. Metal glows red. It's a real engineering nightmare.
Generally speaking, the value of heat rises as the temperature rises. Heat at 20C/68F can warm your house in the winter, but it's otherwise kind of useless. Heat at 100C/212F makes great domestic hot water, heat at 200C is into the zone where it can be used to boil water and run a steam turbine. So the higher the temperature, the more useful the waste heat.
Another fun thing about hydrogen electrolysis is that you can do it at any pressure you want. You do use a little bit more energy because it's producing gas bubbles with additional energy stored as pressure, but it allows you to generate hydrogen directly into a pressure tank if you want to.
Hydrogen storage is a more difficult problem. A 50% efficient electrolysis cell makes 15g of H2 per kWh. If you're storing H2 in bags, you have 89 grams per cubic meter so about 6 kwh per cubic meter. Over 3000 cubic meters of H2 from 20MWh.
Compressed H2 at 200 bar (3000 PSI, SCUBA pressure) is 15g / liter, conveniently the same number as 1 cubic meter in a balloon. So 200 liter "big tank" corresponds to 1.2 MWh.

Was running some ideas w/ ChatGPT to try to find a solution that would work for storing excess energy from solar generation.
I was playing with the idea of having about 20 MWh of excess generation per year. Around 100kWh per day on good days.
Selling to the grid requires annoying permits and (depending on where) they don't pay well at all.
Batteries are like 1k€ per 10kwh, so they're good for a day or two of buffer storage, but not more.
Storing energy in water doesn't really work, you need insane amounts of water to store meaningful energy. Phase change materials like paraffin wax store more because it's latent heat of melting, but the size is still insane.
If you're thinking about storing heat, you probably want reversible chemical reactions, such as quicklime + water, or epsom salt + water which release a lot of heat, and then you recharge them by dehydrating them with heat. Epsom salt is probably the most interesting, it stores 190 kWh per ton and you can recharge it at 50-100C if you do so under vacuum. You can get close to these numbers using an off-the-shelf heat pump. But still, 20MWh equates to 100 tons of material, which is large and expensive.
An energy storage solution which is dumb NOT to pursue is vacuum drying. You can build a vacuum chamber and put lumber, garden produce, wood chips & things you want to burn, and you pull a vacuum in the chamber then use a heat pump to push heat into the chamber which causes the water to boil. The smart thing to do is run a pipe from the chamber to a condenser which is kept in cold water (pond, stream, swimming pool, etc) and because it's cooler than the chamber, it will condense out the water that is being vaporized from the stuff you're drying. This means you don't need to keep adding vacuum, just heat.
Tech Ingredients did this exact setup, except for vacuum distillation of wine. Once the vacuum is set, you don't need to add vacuum, just heat. And you only need to keep the hot side hotter than the cold side, and the reaction will continue to work.

BTW, when you start seeing stuff like this, the correct way to read it is that the current leadership is WEAK. And by weak, I mean they are at risk of losing their leadership position.
So they're not asking for things with the idea that it's gonna be realistic. They're sending a message "we have balls the size of grapefruit, we're gonna fight this to the last man", and that message is for the Iranian people, because wha they're actually worried about is that they're gonna get replaced.
And if they go soft for even one second, the next guys are gonna come in and grab leadership away from them, and they're gonna be EVER MORE hardline than the last guys were.
And NOBODY can stop it, not the Americans, not the Israelis, and not the Iranians. It's a socio-political equivalent of the Dr. Strangelove Doomsday Machine.

If you think they're gonna want to end the war, you'd be out of your fucking mind. And even if they want to, they can't, because their entire ability to lead is contingent on them not looking like a pussy. If they start talking about peace, the next guy is gonna say "screw this loser, we're wiping Israel off the map", and just like that, he ain't gonna be a leader anymore.
Once Iran switches into this mode, that's it, there's no way out. It's Afghanistan all over again, but with the Hormuz closed for - probably - the rest of the decade.

In my world (software), Indian shops are known for promising things they can't deliver, and not telling you when the project is in trouble - so when you find out for yourself, it's already so completely off the rails that you're probably gonna have to kill it.
Taiwanese hardware makers really want to create something great, Chinese hardware makers want to push the project through as fast as possible to a satisfactory completion (or at least not bad enough you complain).
Chinese and Russian developers are some of the most impressive in the world, they're natural mathematicians.
Eastern Europeans are also quite competent and easy to work with.
Germans show up prepared better than anyone, but then they overthink everything to death and it all ends up like the Berlin airport.
Frenchmen only want to work on "interesting" activities, if what you're doing is boring they won't have the stomach for it, BUT, they think like battlefield commanders when it comes to surprises and curveballs. They're some of the best I've ever seen at keeping a project on rails.
I don't really have any experience working with Japanese or American developers.

My findings:
I can *significantly* cut my monthly power bill without installing a single PV panel, just an inverter and a battery, because:
1. I can reduce my service to the smallest size, which (here) reduces monthly interconnect fee
2. I can charge only during off-peak hours, almost halving my per-kWh cost

If you're planning a PV installation and you don't have a net-metering deal where you can use the grid as an infinite size battery GET PER DAY DATA.
Don't rely on "average day" or yearly total, because they are meaningless if your consumption on one day will have you buying grid power while the next day you're generating way more than you need.

Selling to the grid means all of the equipment is significantly more expensive, and (here) they pay you wholesale rates for your energy and then turn around and charge you retail on cloudy days, so it's better to spring for a battery.

Pulled a year of public solar energy data to estimate what a 22KW PV array would be like at my house, assuming daily consumption of 20kWh.
1. Data is per-day because I assume I'll have enough batteries to store 1 day worth of generation
2. It is super noisy, there are days when topping off with grid power is still necessary (about 400 kWh per year)
3. 18,000 kWh/year is wasted, unless I wanted to sell to the grid, and they don't pay much...
4. Though it requires a 192€/year interconnect fee, maintaining a grid connection is still cheaper than topping off with a generator.
5. It's basically infeasible to create an array so large that it will still generate enough in the worst months of the winter.

The generally accepted "buts" are:
1. Fraud (knowingly lying to someone to take advantage of them)

4. Incitement to violence/crime: Trying to manipulate someone into becoming violent and/or breaking the law. A fairly straightforward case would be if a hypnotist were to hypnotize people and tell them to go do crime. But this is a controversial topic, there have been cases where factual news was suppressed by the argument that "if people heard that, they'd riot", which is very much bullshit.
An interesting case was in the 60s(?) someone had a kids TV show and they told kids to dial some phone number that was a pay number (like those old phone sex things). I don't think they really lied, but they did get in trouble because it was considered manipulative.

Random thought:
I think basically nobody agrees with my political perspectives because:
1. The left has a very narrow orthodoxy, and if you don't agree with it 100% then they claim to think you're a not-see. To anyone outside of the leftist bubble, this is self-evidently garbage.
2. The right has a tenancy to over-simplify problems and is attracted to "big hammer" solutions - like as if everything will be utopia if we just send the blacks back to Africa, take away women's vote, evict the jews, etc. The problem with these "simple" ideas is that if things were so simple, somewhere at some point in history, some country would have accidentally stumbled on them, thrived, and made them a universal standard.
If you approach things from a first principles perspective based on the assumption that governance is a hard problem and the best countries to live in today are already solving it as best we know how - conclusions and proposals end up being a lot different from anything that is typically discussed in the political arena.

Compared to gold, it's hilariously good. Every time you transfer gold, you have to take risk to get it to its destination and then the recipient has to either trust you, or melt it down to check you didn't put tungsten in it.
Transfer of other things is pretty much always mediated by a custodian, which means there's someone out there holding and protecting the underlying asset - and then you have to pay for that protection.
Either you're paying a vaulting fee, property tax, or such up front, or you're holding an asset like dollars where the protection fee is pulled out of the value of the asset by printing.
Arguably bitcoin is in the second category because "happened before" relationship of transactions is protected by mining, but that fee is lower and more predictable than it is with dollars, which get printed for any old reason, subject to the whim of politicians.
