@nprofile…epju @nprofile…srmy one thing that article is completely missing is that stuff that can be self-hosted is stuff that can be community-hosted — or hosted as a service by multiple commercial providers — which is the version that can be actually sustained.
To use the example in the article, the fact that everybody can change oil in the car doesn't mean that everybody should do it themselves, but it means that everybody can easily find a couple or more of auto mechanics that can do the job, and if one of them does that badly or starts asking absurd prices they can move to another one.
regulations, when done decently, are useful, but they don't fix the actual problem that centralized services are monopolistic by nature, and end up in the hands of entities that will find loopholes in any regulation to keep doing as much damage as they are allowed to, as long as it's profitable

Years ago, I bought A Year of Zero Waste Sewing (lizhaywood.com.au/a-year-of-ze…) as a zine, with the intent to print and bind it when it was completed.
Then our printer was acting up, and there were other reasons to delay, so I postponed the printing and not exactly forgot about it, but it went quite low on the list of priorities.
Now I could have used a printed version of the pleating pages from December, so I decided it was a good time to print everything and fit binding it between other projects.
We have a new #printer, we've had it for quite some time and have been quite happy with it.
It printed every number of the zine with very little issues¹, with automatic two sided printing, everything was working fine
Until December.
It didn't print December. out of toner. for the first time since we bought it.
It claims we had been warned about it. Probably on a notice board in the usual underground corridor with no lights.
They know.
¹ and those were strictly between keyboard and chair

e avere professori a sufficienza per 2400 studenti costa di più all'università che non averne a sufficienza per i 400 all'ingresso che darebbero una percentuale di completamento degli studi del 50% che mi pare molto più ragionevole dell'8%.
è vero, con 2400 studenti l'università riceve anche più rette, che però mi risulta (almeno una volta) non coprissero veramente tutte le spese, e *giustamente*.

Uops, ieri potrei aver accidentalmente un forno da pizza (a legna, “portatile“)
(conta come accidentalmente quando è più di un anno che fai piani per comprarlo, ma poi schiacci il pulsante “acquista” oggi anziché “probabilmente questo mese” perché hai trovato uno sconto sul sito?__
Ovviamente l'ho preso perché faccio spesso pizza per famigliari e amici, e volevo avere modo di cuocerla alle temperature adeguate, non per avere anche un modo alternativo di cuocere pizza e pane in caso di blackout prolungati.
(e per chi sa dove abito, e ha già mangiato alla stessa tavola con noi: quando il forno arriva avrò bisogno di volontari per aiutare a consumare la pizza fatta mentre impariamo ad usarlo: temo che non valga la pena accenderlo per la sola pizza per tre persone)

Uooops, yesterday I may have accidentally a pizza oven (wood fired, “portable”)
(does it count as accidentally when you have making plans about buying it for more than a year, but then hit the “buy” button today instead of “maybe this month” because of a discount on the website?)
Of course that's because I often make pizza both for our family and for friends, and I wanted to cook it at properly high temperatures, and not because I wanted to have an alternative way to cook pizza and bread in case of prolonged blackouts.
(If you already know where I live and we have already eaten together: when the oven will arrive I'll need volunteers to help me consume the pizza made while learning how to use it: I don't think it's worth firing it up for just pizza for three people.)

@nprofile…dc7h a completely unrelated (not) anecdote: years ago I used to routinely bake pretzels, try one as soon as it came out of the oven, then pack them up in a paper bag, travel a couple hours by train and bring them to a D&D night
I knew that after two hours traveling they weren't at their best. the D&D group didn't, and they *loved* them :D
(and it's not like I didn't eat one or two with them)

@nprofile…qmgv @nprofile…trny se ho ben capito vendono dei kit che sono una via di mezzo tra il fai da te e il tutto installato, sia come prezzo che come sbattita, però comunque non costano spiccioli, c'è da lavorarci, e non sono sicura che con quelli si possa rimandare in rete l'eccesso, ma solo autoconsumare (che se il tetto è piccolo potrebbe anche non essere un problema).
Also, non so come fare meglio, ma quanto discriminatori non sono gli incentivi in cui la cifra viene rimborsata sulle tasse in X anni?
