Who else is noticing AI-generated illustrations in the real world appearing at new hairdressers, ice-cream parlors, kebap shops, butcheries, everywhere?
Sure, there's no reason why AI slop should be confined to the online world. But as long as I will still be able to distinguish AI signs from non-AI signs, I will consider these AI stores/restaurants as inferior quality. Is that wrong?

After individually meeting @npub100m…ajzk in April and @npub1fxy…2ju5 in May, it felt great to meet both again with [@rude1.blacksky.team](https://bsky.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/rude1.blacksky.team ) at #pubconf2026 This is still a competitive situation. Our protocols and the incentives they create matter. Our backgrounds influence what we build. Our financing models bind and enable us. But I felt all of us belonging to "Team Open" very strongly in Amsterdam. I am excited to see where this will bring us and what we can do together.

I want to expand on the age-verification working group plan, to avoid confusion. The goal is to create an informal group of experts in the areas of law, privacy, trust & safety, and technology. Their agenda is explicitly not to _implement_ age verification/assurance, neither in the Mastodon software nor in our own servers. The group will assess various risks for the user base, the server admins, and the project and analyse it from different perspectives to provide a balanced recommendation.

Mastodon and the Fediverse matter to me because they present a truly viable alternative to this model, by showing its users no advertisement, respecting users’ privacy, focussing on keeping users safe, and allowing them to connect to the Fediverse and beyond rather than putting them into a digital prison to extract as much metadata about them to please advertisers.

I’m humbled to be given this opportunity and want to tell you a bit more about myself and how I think about the future of Mastodon and the Fediverse. I have a business and finance background. I have worked for technology companies my whole career but have become increasingly tired of the extractive venture capital model of financing them, which only works for the rare outliers and seemingly never leads to the best product humans deserve.

Hi! Today is my first official day as the Executive Director of Mastodon, replacing @npub1vl7…f6g0 as CEO. I joined the Mastodon team more than 5 years ago, mostly working for Mastodon in the evenings on top of a 120% day job. I was the driving force behind the incorporation of the German non-profit, am a co-founder of the US 501c3 non-profit, and I have contributed to most of the fundraising success, which allowed us to expand the team.

My larger goal is to replace all creepy social services, such as:
• Twitter to Mastodon ✅
• GMail to ProtonMail
• Google Calendar to ProtonCalendar
• WhatsApp to Telegram
• Facebook to WT:Social
• Google Drive to ProtonDrive/NextCloud
• Google Chrome to Mozilla Firefox
Anyone has similar ambitions or achieved the same?
