I went to a concert last night at a venue that draws people from Austin. Three things I saw that I haven’t seen for years living away from cities:

I have hens so I haven’t bought eggs locally for a long time but a friend who owns a restaurant in Washington state says his costs for eggs have tripled. There is also a new law in his state that all eggs must be cage free. Large store brand eggs out there were $6.98 a dozen.

I never had them as a child, so I had no negative associations. I recently found myself with an excess of sturdy homemade burger buns and ground beef. I made what I imagined a sloppy Joe would be, and it was delicious. A little ro-tel with the meat, cooked down enough to remove a lot of the water, plus well minced onions, Worcester a little vinegar and some other spices. It was delicious.

all the points made here are valid, and here’s one more to think about. I can’t remember a time when the cost of food and entertainment was so out of balance with the cost of goods. I can buy a cashmere sweater, once a rare luxury, for the cost of dinner for two at a mediocre casual restaurant. I can buy a full set of dishes for the price of a movie and snacks for two. It’s easy to decide what is the better “value” for your extra money.

Hangover tip: before you have time to even think about anything, stumble out of bed, arrange an entire package of bacon on a sheet pan, and start it in the oven at 400. Then take two NAC and cuddle up on the couch while the bacon cooks. The day really manages itself after that.

that’s interesting. A local appliance guy said a plastic tub is better when you’re on well water. I alway thought stainless was better too. I may end of going for a dish drawer this time. I’ve had them before and they are a little finicky but very nice for a small household.

I don’t want to dox myself because my background is unique, but I know a lot about Orthodox Judaism . The conversion process is rigorous and takes years, the applicant is usually turned down multiple times, and there is absolutely no recruiting of converts. Once you have converted, you should be considered an equal in the community (although just wait until you need to marry off your kids.) the process is designed to to weed out all but the most sincere. That’s what I meant.

I’m in an online poultry raising group. This time of year is fun, lots of people let their turkeys get away from them and end up with 35-40 lb monster birds that no one has any idea how to cook or serve. Home kitchen equipment is no match for them. I really want to see pictures of the “festive bisected turkey” and the other inelegant solutions to the bird issue.
