Anyway, the story my uncle told me was that shortly after Boeing started delivering the 727’s to United this older colleague was tasked with moving an empty 727 from Chicago to some city in the west, probably Denver. This pilot told his wife to hang up her laundry in the yard at a specific time, and look for him overhead. Apparently he flew over at the appointed time, low in altitude, and did a barrel roll in the 727! (2/3)

My uncle was a pilot for United Airlines for almost forty years, flying out of O’Hare airport near Chicago. We lived thirty miles west of Chicago, in what was then a small town (the suburbs have since enveloped the town I grew up in, and marched even further west over the prairie). One of my uncle’s colleagues was an older pilot who coincidentally was the father of one my class mates; this older pilot was trained in the Air Force, and had flown fighter jets. (1/3)

The other incident that I’ve always wondered about is the space shuttle disaster that occurred over New Mexico (I think). It was alleged that the craft lost some of their protective ceramic tiles, but even in that early-Internet era there were some pretty hinky coincidences and facts that came out in the media.
